Pro Excel Dance Project - Wembley Stadium
Aspire Celebrations
On 27th March 2017 students from of Gable Hall School, graduated from Stanford’s Aspire Course run by 24-7 Prayer. The students showcased what they had learned at the Celebration to: the Mayor of Thurrock, our Principal Mr Stokes, business representatives, teachers and proud parents. It was a very impressive presentation.
Students have come a long way and really flourished as they explored topics such as determination, identity and the power of choice. They also visited several organisations including Orsett Fire Station, Thurrock Foodbank and Nuffield Health & Fitness.
It’s been an exciting few months and these students are determined to chase after careers in architecture, car mechanics and photography so watch this space – Well done everyone! Students involved: Su Cook, Kieran Davidson, Ben Roche, Stacie Rawson and Charlie Bhowmick
On Saturday 8th April forty six pupils and six members of staff travelled to Wembley for our first joint mass dance project with Pro Excel at the iconic venue in front of 70,000 people. Pupils had previously rehearsed for two weekends in February and learnt three dances to Louisa Johnson's latest songs. We had a very early start but were lucky enough to be the first school to arrive at Wembley Stadium and immediately we were all blown away by the sheer size of the stadium and the excitement of the rehearsals alongside fifty other schools. During the sound checks and rehearsals, pupils witnessed Louisa Johnson rehearse and complete her sound checks, she then met the group of dancers and gave them a good luck message. Pupils were staged around the outside of the pitch and performed with Louisa Johnson whilst the two premier League Rugby teams warmed up.
After the performance pupils had amazing seats to watch the Rugby
game between Saracens and Harlequins. It was a fantastic day and
all pupils thoroughly enjoyed the performance and were praised for their
professionalism and manners throughout the day.
We look forward to further projects with Pro Excel!

Year 7 Football Team:
Year 7’s first season for Gable Hall
was a season of near misses.
However, after a rocky start,
the boys can be proud of what they
have achieved this season. After two tough first
games for the school they picked themselves up
and managed to put themselves on a nice run
scoring plenty of goals in the league, noticeably
against Hassenbrook (7-0), Hathaway (5-1) and
William Edwards (4-2). We managed to finish joint
2nd in the league with William Edwards and only
finished behind Ockendon, who won alltheir games.
Moving onto the cup: Gable Hall were drawn
against Gateway in their quarter final and won it
with an impressive score line of 9-1. The semi-final
saw Gable Hall against Harris Academy, who had
previously beaten us 2-1 in the league. Gable Hall
started slowly and found themselves 2-0 down in
the first 5 minutes. However, the boys showed
great character and a long range strike from Kieron
Miles and an instinctive finish from Jude Jolliffe had
us level at half time. We then struck again with
another impressive finish from top scorer Jolliffe
and now the final looked imminent. Despite some
brilliant saves from keeper Ashley Drury, Harris
equalized as the defence fell asleep and took the
game to extra time. Both sides hit the woodwork
more than twice and it could have gone either way
but sadly, in the last minute of extra time, the
Harris right back struck a long range shot into the
top corner to put his side 4-3 up. The same player
got sent off a minute later after denying Jolliffe a
goal scoring opportunity as he searched for his hat
trick.
It was a shame, but the boys showed great integrity
and have been a pleasure to work with this season.
I am confident that they are capable of winning
something next year!

Below is ‘Part four’ of a four part series of extracts from this book…..
I could send Waseem. He’s a clever boy. He will grow up in no time and come back to help us.’ ‘Isn’t he your youngest son? He’s barely five. It will be decades before he can help you. And your other children will resent you for the rest of your life.’ He suddenly understood the architectural genius behind Transit: the infinite emptiness, the unbearable immeasurability of time, the diminishing of memory and hope… It was the burial ground for human resilience. Perhaps things mattered in Point A. Maybe even had significance and Were worth fighting for. Made a difference. Perhaps death was not the worse outcome after all that had happened. And if Transit is where people went to be humiliated to point zero, then what kind of life awaited them at Point B that had to be prepared for in this way? Subjugation? Slavery? What kind of freedom were they offering when they would only allow a parentless child to go through? Don’t these children need to stay with their families? And if Point B is the safe haven, why on earth would they want to avoid it? Who would want to avoid it? He could not remember. And as he spent hours—perhaps days, even months or years—contemplating, he did not realise that he had stopped thinking altogether. He was merely acting like he had thoughts to offer the empty space that surrounded them. He squatted on the yellow marble terrain, staring towards an invisible Point B, wondering if death was really worth running from.

Oluwaseun Akinfenwa – Year 7 Oluwaseun created this fantastic pizza using puff pastry and decorating with onion, ham, chicken, tomato and cheese. Oluwaseun showed great skills with cutting and preparing his ingredients, demonstrated good hygiene techniques and excellent time management of the recipe.
The charity organisers were so grateful to receive the quantity of goody-filled shoeboxes we collected at Gable Hall. We gave them the largest load they had received so far. A big ‘Thank You’ to all the teachers and form tutors who conveyed the urgency of the message to the students, the charity committee who provided the media possible to keep the message alive and to the students who donated so much for a great cause.
The shoeboxes, along with the sweet messages the children wrote on them, will be shipped to Lebanon next week.

Shreya Modhwadia—Year 7 With the help of the Charity Committee raised an amazing £85 on Friday 5th May 2017 for cancer re-search. Well done!
STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS Congratulations to...
Lego Club
Lego Club has proved very popular with all year groups. Between them
Sarah Betts, Lilly Anderson, Aaron Mcmanus and Harry Underwood made this
fantastic and creative Gryffindor Common Room.
If you’re interested in coming along, the Club is on Tuesdays all of Food Break 2.
Olivia Pasquale - Year 7
Olivia has donated over 13 inches of her hair to The Little Princess Trust, which will go towards making a wig for a sick child. She has also raised over £600, maybe even a bit more as she has several sponsor forms that have been put around her family and work places for a charity called ERIC UK. This charity offers support, advice and help for childhood bowel and bladder conditions.
Olivia’s little brother is quite poorly and is under a specialist consult-ant that deals with his medical needs and Olivia wanted to help and support other families that may have to deal with things that she sees her brother suffering with. Olivia’s parents are extremely proud of her and we are at school also. Well done Olivia!
The Charity have personally written to Olivia and called her a Hero!
Hayley was selected, along with other successful athletes, to compete in the Virgin Media sponsored London Mini Marathon on Sunday 23rd April that also doubles up as the British Athletics Three Mile Road Championships.
Her experience began when she travelled to London with the team and stayed in campus accommodation on Saturday evening. It was then early to bed for a 5:30am start on Sunday travelling to the start and preparing to race in her age group: Under 15 Girls at 9:15am.
The start was very competitive and after some jostling, she soon found herself racing along the embankment enroute to the finish at
the Mall. Hayley finished in a respectable time of 17:44 for 5k.
Hayley had a very enjoyable day and is hopefully looking to be selected next year.
Congratulations Hayley!
Jemma Thompson - Year 10 Congratulations to Jemma who attended the Regional Final of the Jack Petchey “Speak Out” Challenge. Jemma was the winner from our in-house competition and therefore represented Gable Hall at Castle View School.
Jemma delivered an honest and inspirational speech on mental health to a large crowd of pupils, parents, carers, teachers and judges from the local community which would have taken a huge amount of courage. Jemma was placed a fantastic 3rd out of 16 speakers.

The groups were given Hovis products to take home
and sample with their families and in return, had to
give feedback on the products. Each group had to
prepare a final presentation outlining their findings
and suggestions for Hovis.
Adam Bassant, Logistics Manager and
Richard Harrison, Operations Manager for Hovis
attended a presentation morning at Gable Hall in
order for the groups of students to present their
feedback and ask further questions.
All participants received a certificate and selection of

Summer Term in The Food Department: It’s been a busy start back this term for the Food Department. Year 7 have been developing their cookery skills with a variety of recipes that have included Pizza, Rock Buns, Sweet Vegetable Muffins (yes really!) Scotch Eggs are next on the list. Year 8 have been learning and exploring Multi-Cultural Food and we have already seen some fantastic Greek Potato Salads. Italian Cookery will be explored next with Focaccia Bread and Italian Cookies next up on the menu. Year 9 have an exciting term ahead and we have already started finding out about Bar-b-que Cookery. Learning and developing methods for safe handling of a variety of meats and enhancing cookery skills with creating exciting salads and breads. This week’s ‘Let’s Get Cooking’ recipe is taken from a Year 7 recipe - Sweet vegetable Beetroot and Chocolate Muffins.
Sweet Vegetable Beetroot and Chocolate Muffins: Surprisingly, the beetroot in this recipe enhances the flavour of the chocolate and gives the muffins a soft texture. They also develop a lovely rich colour when cooked, not unlike Red Velvet Cake. Decorate with your favourite icing. Please note: If using beetroot in vinegar, wash the vinegar off thoroughly first!
Ingredients – makes 6 Muffins 75g melted margarine or butter 125g grated washed beetroot 100g sugar 1 egg 75g self-raising flour 25g cocoa powder Method 1. Preheat oven to 180°F/200°C 2. Melt the butter or margarine 3. Add all the other ingredients and mix well. 4. Spoon the mixture into 6 Muffin Cases. 5. Cook for 15-20 minutes. Muffins should be risen and ‘spring back’ when you test them.
