Watch this space……!! A group of 9 students and 3 staff alongside 3 crew members undertook a voyage on a sailing boat for 5 days. We departed from Essex Marina and sailed to Walton on the Naze and then on to Felixstowe. We anchored in sheltered waters overnight. For the voyage we were split into 3 teams and all had to follow a duty rota consisng of cooking, washing up and happy hour which wasn’t what we imagined, we had to clean the whole boat including the toilets!! During the night when we were anchored we had to carry out night watches in our teams for 3 hours. During our watch we had to monitor the water depth, the posion of the boat using bearings and baery levels. We learnt various sailing skills and techniques including different knots used, different sails, their names and what they are used for and how to change them. We focused on two techniques, jibing and tacking. We succeeded in seng the second best me of 34 seconds during the tacking technique. We also learnt to plot our locaon on charts and monitor various informaon on different instruments around the boat and best of all we got to steer the boat. As well as sailing we had the opportunity to go onshore and spend one day on a beach where we had a BBQ and played various ball games. We had a fantasc day seal watching and we saw several seals . The best bits of the trip were the day on beach in the sun, cooking the BBQ and playing rugby and achieving all the knowledge we did and seng the me we did on the tacking. It was a fantasc trip and we are very grateful for the opportunity we were given. Ahoy, me hearties! written by Harry Blackburn (Yr 10) and Thomas Pasquale (Yr 9)

COME ALONG, IT’S GREAT FUN!

New York, New York so good they named it twice!

Performing Arts and History recently spent a week in New York . It really was…..so good!! We saw “School of Rock” and “Finding Neverland” on Broadway and were lucky enough to See Alfie Boa’s debut night! We were blessed with beautiful weather which meant loads of sight seeing. We visited: Times Square, Empire State Building, Top of the Rock, a Water Taxi around the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, 911 memorial and museum, The High Line, MOMA, Guggenheim, Natural History Museum, Central Park and ended the week with a walk across Brooklyn Bridge. The dancers learnt choreography from “Finding Neverland” and

participated in a dance class at the Alvin Ailey Studio’s. Dramatists took part in stage combat and performance workshops. While History and Art visited some amazing Museums and galleries. The only downer was the rain on the final day, which meant we were forced into Macy’s for a few hours to take cover! The pupils were lovely and polite throughout the trip and our pilot even complimented them as we left the plane, explaining that he had never had such a well behaved school party on board before. Despite walking miles, I’m hoping that the pupils will remember this trip forever. We crammed a lot in and had some long days but it was well worth it! Miss K Latham

Achievement - Egg Free Sponge Cake Michael Edwards Year 9

Michael is one of many who are Lactose Intolerant, which means that he has the inability to digest lactose - a sugar found in milk and dairy products, which as you can imagine, can sometimes prove difficult for him when he wants to join in with a practical lesson. The Food Department helped Michael

to source a suitable recipe that was as close as possible to the original cake recipe the class were going to cook. This was very important to Michael, as it was his first attempt of making a cake that he would be able to eat. As you can see, the cake turned out fantastically well and Michael was very proud of his achievement. Well done Michael!

Above & Beyond Awards Georgina and Amy produced research projects that were completed to an outstanding quality. They took it upon them-selves to do additional work

and research which contributed towards their mark. The amount of hard work and dedication they showed deserves rewarding. Food Technology - Exam Success

Year 10 GCSE Catering Exam – Afternoon Tea

Part of Year 10’s GCSE Catering Exam has been to research, prepare and present the theme of ‘An Afternoon Tea’. Students had two hours in which to lay their table; prepare and present their food and to fully clear up. As, apart from the cookery aspect, hygiene, safety and cleanliness were also observed. Hannah Mattock’s table is just one example of the standard of presentation and quality of the food that was achieved. Hannah’s Afternoon Tea consisted of a Jam and Cream Swiss Roll, decorated with chocolate icing. Heart shaped Fruit Scones filled with jam and fresh cream. Amazing Heart Cakes filled with fresh cream and jam and deli-cious Sausage Rolls. What an achievement! Well done Hannah and to all Year 10’s for an outstanding exam.

Young Writer’s Competition

Congratulations to Lucia Lucioni who had her Spine-Chillers story published in a Young Writers anthology. Her story was not only spooky but gripping from the start! Well done Lucia.

Dealing with Exam Stress The exam period can be a stressful time for students and their parents and it is important that we recognise the signs of stress so as to deal with it effectively. Signs of stress include: Being anxious, nervous or afraid Snapping at people Headaches So what can you do if you are feeling stressed? You should talk to someone about it. Simply telling someone about the issue can take a huge weight off the sufferers’ shoulders. Try to organise your revision time into short sessions, take regular breaks, and remember – if you are trying your best and working hard everyone will be proud of what you achieve.
