Our visit to Cambridge University!

Once again we are busily reading our eight short-listed books for the Carnegie Reading Challenge and have had our first full meeting (Working Lunch), in the Library, with all years taking part. Lots of positive, animated and excited students with their heads in the books. We have over thirty students taking part this year, double the amount we usually have. Looking forward to 20th June when we go to the Thameside Theatre for the day to discuss the books, with other schools in Thurrock. Lots of Very Happy Reading to you to.

- Mrs Georgiou—Librarian

Ex Gable Hall Students gathered last Saturday to remember Karis-May Darling for her 18th Birthday. Karis sadly passed away 5 years ago from streptococcal meningitis. She attended Gable Hall and was a very talented young lady; singing and dancing. It was emotional but very inspiring. God Bless you Karis.

German Visit

Back in March, students from Geschwister-Scholl Gymnasium visited Gable Hall during their school trip to England. Year 7 Violet and Indigo had the opportunity to meet the German students, give them a tour around the school and partake in activities such as football, a quiz about London and speed dating task that Mrs Handford had prepared.

Femi says “This day was a good opportunity to practice our German speaking

skills, by speaking to German children our age. I really enjoyed doing this and also made a few friends through it!”

Megan says “we met some of our pen pals that we have written to in class and it was amazing to

meet them in person! It was a wonderful experience and really helped us with speaking German!”

Sophie says “It was a unique chance to practice our German speaking with German students, as well as the chance to talk to the students about life in

Germany, discussing topics such as school, pocket money and shopping! They had the chance to talk to us about life here in England and alles in allem war es sehr interessant!”

You should have received a letter (hard copy and via InTouch) outlining changes to Gable Hall reporting of attainment from May 2016. Our changes tie in with the National model of GCSE grades becoming 9 (high) to 1 (low) from 2017 (English and Maths only) and 2018 for every subject. Flight paths can be adjusted up or down but the expectation is that a student will move at least horizontally from their starting point in year 7. For example a child arriving with a 4B (now graded ‘1’) would gain a grade 5 in year 11, the new GCSE ‘good grade’ pass.

Morgan Acton—Year 11

The Mayor of Thurrock had requested that all schools in the area produce a piece of Art work to represent Diversity in Thurrock. Morgan Acton produced a beautiful piece of work which she took over to present to the Mayor. We spent an hour or more with the Mayor, where we had refreshments in the Mayor’s ‘parlour’, plus a tour of where she conducted her business. On presenting her work the Mayor said ‘It was her favourite piece’ from all the other pieces already presented, reflecting exactly what she had requested. This is now going to be framed along with all the other school entries to be displayed .

Well done Morgan!

Josh Thompson – Year 8 Josh made delicious Chelsea Buns using a traditional old English recipe - which goes back to the 17th Century! This recipe takes a lot of concentration because; each stage needs to be completed well before you have the end result. Josh worked hard at each stage and ended up with beautiful Chelsea Buns. Well done Josh!

Aimee Goldsmith – Year 8 Aimee made some excellent Sausage Rolls. Aimee was very creative and made a diamond pattern on the top of the pastry which when cooked, looked superb! The pastry was also crisp and golden. Wonderful Sausage Rolls.

Well done Aimee.

Joseph Clifforth—Year 11 Joseph plays for U16 Essex County. On Sunday they played against Bedfordshire at Burnham Ramblers FC for the 2015/2016 East Anglian Counties Championship and won 2-1! Congratulations to Essex.

Mia Lempriere - Year 7 Outstanding Homework

Year 7’s Homework task was to design a menu for a BBQ or a Party. Mia produced an outstanding piece of homework. Her theme was ‘It’s BBQ Time!’ and inside the beautifully decorated handmade box were separate pockets, which included small holders for sachets of salt/pepper and tomato sauce! Each section inside the box had pictures to show you what your food would look like when cooked. Absolutely brilliant! Well done Mia.
