Open House at Toastmasters Gulfport Toastmasters is hosting an Open House on Wednesday, February 6th from 6-7:30 p.m. for guests to learn firsthand what Toastmasters is all about: growing your communication and leadership skills in a positive and supportive atmosphere. The free event will be held at The Gulfport Meeting Center, 5021 Tangerine Avenue S.

(corner of Tangerine Ave. S. and 51st St. S.). Snacks and beverages will be provided. The Open House theme is “Feedback: the Breakfast of Champions.” Attendees will learn how to provide feedback that produces results and discover how Toastmasters’ fun and supportive learning environment can help you build confidence. It’s perfect for managers, business owners, college students, parents, and anyone who interacts with other people.

“We’re hosting this event so that attendees will observe how a typical meeting is run and to show how attending weekly meetings can definitely enhance members’ communication and leadership skills” said Donna Kolody, President. “This event is ideal for college age students up to retirees because it has been proven that the constructive feedback you obtain at weekly meetings enhances what you already know and gives you the chance to practice new skills. Personal and professional growth opportunities are unlimited.” Kolody added, “This is a great opportunity for guests, new members, and the Gulfport/St. Petersburg/South Pasadena community to see what all the fun is about.” Some of the other proven benefits of Toastmasters include: overcoming your fear of public speaking, increasing your self-confidence, improving your leadership skills, and making new friends. For more information, contact [email protected], call 727-537-9098 or visit our website at www.gulfporttoastmasters.com.

Traffic, from front page

other traffic control measures, such as painting a yellow line in the road to make it appear narrower. • If that doesn’t produce the results you want, the police will use radar-based devices to measure not only the speed but the number of cars on the road. • If that study tells the city that traffic calming would be warranted in that area, a homeowner from that area should turn in a traffic calming application and petition. More than that the homeowners on the street (or streets) in question should sign a petition. • Next the city will once again look at traffic volume and speeds, but this time the city will pay to use certified equipment and traffic engineers. • If that study shows inappropriate traffic volumes and speed, city staff will confirm the petition signatures. • The city will hold a public meeting about traffic calming. • City staff will ask the city council to approve spending money for traffic calming measures. Public Works Director Don Sopak stresses that the city will look at other solutions, such as enforcement or islands, before resorting to speed-bumps. For more examples, read this presentation online at TheGabber.com. “We don’t want to go out there and throw speed bumps everywhere,” Di-rector Sopak says. “We would like to solve it through enforcement. They start with enforcement and then they look for other alternatives based on the conditions of the road.” Although the city started exploring traffic calming options in response to queries about 7th Avenue South, Gulfport Police Chief Robert Vincent said no property owner has yet asked for traffic calming through this pro-cedure.

Hippies and RednecksBy Rob Fowler “Rob, there is just one more thing I want to bring up.” Now when Peter Duffy has something to say, I am always eager to listen. “In a couple weeks, County Music Television will be here at the Blueberry Patch with five bus loads of rednecks. Yea, they’ve been here checking the place out and will be shooting an episode for the next season of CMT’s hit TV show ‘My Big Redneck Vacation.’”

Of course, being a marketing professional, I was excited as all get-out! “No way! Really! Wow! This will be great for the Blueberry Patch and Gulfport!” Production Manager Craig Hymson and his team spent a lot of time over a few days with the Blueberry Patch filming bits and pieces of the upcoming episode with the Sharevival Board Members and regular Patch Pals. (Sharevival is the non-profit organization that is the organization behind the Blueberry Patch.) The big event was on the evening of their last

day. I was very fortunate to be able to attend and what a blast it was! We all had the opportunity to actually meet and get to know the stars of “My Big Redneck Vacation.” And it was especially a hoot to meet them in a total party atmosphere where they were having so much fun! We all feel we made some friends with this bunch. And now we’ll follow them on their many vacation adventures as if they are real family. To let you in on a secret, the Blueberry Patch is about as much a “hippy” place as these TV stars were real “rednecks.” The ‘Patch appears hippy-like with the “Peace, Love, Blueberries” theme, and the CMT stars appear “redneckish” with their twang and countrified behavior, but really we were all very similar in how we truly are. Mix together some music, beer, food, friends, and some colorful decorations and all of the sudden Hippy and Redneck become one. Add into the mix punk rockers, hip hoppers, old folks, youngsters, goths, hillbillies, left wing, right wing, rich, poor, nerds, preps, aliens, animals, and so on, and you have a pure Blueberry Patch (and Gulfport) experience! The TV show will air on February 2nd at 9 p.m. on CMT (Channel 45 or 1314 HD on BrightHouse Cable).

Twilight Tuesday Keeps Market Open Late The Gulfport Tuesday Fresh Market is welcoming “snowbird” season with extended Twilight Tuesday hours on the first Tuesday of each month. Twilight Tuesdays will keep the Market open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, February 5th will be the next opportunity for evening shopping at the Market, along with a cooking demonstration by a popular local chef. Evening hours are in response to popular demand from locals who work during normal Tuesday Market hours. The Gulfport Tuesday Fresh Market is one of the only Markets in the region to offer evening hours. Regular weekly hours for the Fresh Market are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on other Tuesdays. The Market is held on Beach Blvd. below 28th Ave. S. On February 5th beginning at 6:30 p.m., Chef Jill Johnson will offer a discussion of the quinoa grain, including information on its history, nutritive value, and preparation techniques. She will demonstrate the preparation of her own popular quinoa salad, offering samples and recipes. Other cooking demonstrations and events are planned for each “Twilight Tuesday” at the Fresh Market continuing through the season. The time-honored art of spinning yarn from fiber will be the subject of hands-on classes to be held during the Gulfport Tuesday Fresh Market in February and beyond. Billie Rodriguez and her daughter Brennan will teach students in a one-on-one process for as many one-hour sessions as desired. Registration for classes begins immediately, and lessons will commence at the Market on Tuesday, February 5th during the hours of 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Waiting lists for additional lessons and classes will be maintained for others interested in learning. The cost for lessons will be $15 per hour. Over 50 vendors are present at the Fresh Market each Tuesday, day and evening, offering a variety of fresh produce, baked goods, cheese, seafood, Florida grass-fed beef, honey, herbs, sauces, jams, desserts, and other unique and artisan foods. Shoppers may choose from ingredients to create their

own cuisine, or prepared foods that are ready to take home to heat and eat. As always, many other items are available from Market vendors, including hand-made bath and body items, jewelry, plants and flowers, art work and fine crafts and much more. Live music in two locations is always featured during the Fresh Market and will also be part of the evening experience. The village in which the Market takes place includes a variety of independent shops, boutiques, galleries and restaurants, all within easy walking distance. The cluster of

restaurants in the village has become one of Tampa Bay’s premier dining destinations. Shops and restaurants will be open and will welcome Tuesday evening visitors. Parking is free and convenient. Gulfport’s Fresh Market is a community-spirited gathering in a small, “Old Florida”-style town, with its motto: “Food for your body; community spirit for your soul.” More information and photos can be found at www.gulfportma.com or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/gulfportfreshmarket, or contact Daniel Hodge at 727-366-4086, email [email protected].
