About G20 Foundation

The G20 Foundation is an independent platform formed to help develop a framework for better global governance.

§  As a non-partisan think tank, we stimulate constructive and effective discussions within “Outreach Dialogue” in order to support the implementation of the G20 commitments on a national level.

§  Thereby we foster the development of innovative solutions to global challenges, such as economic stability and sustainable growth.

§  As an intermediary platform, the G20 Foundation positions itself as process enabler and a facilitator between governments, business, and academia within the G20 process.

§  We add value through encouraging broader public consensus and understanding of the G20 commitments which leads to higher accountability and raises effectiveness of a governance process.


Our Goals

Coordinate communication between major G20 stakeholders:

- Develop innovative solutions and share best practices for challenges on the G20 agenda. - Contributing to transparency in the overall communication process and creating a broader public consensus for G20 commitments.

Provide a framework for analysis of topics attached to G20 agenda:

- Combining impulses from politics, economics, academia, private and public organization at national and international level to foster focused public discussions on the G20 agenda and commitments.

Support the implementation of G20 action items in individual countries:

- Reinforce the post-summit implementation process of selective items decided upon on the G20 level in cooperation with various stakeholders from the member countries.

Increase international cooperation:

- Establish new approaches for international cooperation by connecting leading personalities from all relevant sectors worldwide on specific issues. - This is an opportunity to unite cultures, countries, and people based on shared ideals.

Summary and Key Events in 2013


Russian G20 Presidency

§  Amongst others, we participated at many of the G20 Meetings of Russian Presidency as well as all of the major G20-Outreach events.

§  As a highlight we took part in G20 Summit in St. Petersburg on September 5-6. After the summit our Research team elaborated the G20 Russia Summit report to evaluate the outcomes of the Outreach Groups and their input to the G20 Agenda to provide more transparency in the process. §  We would greatly thank Svetlana Lukash, Russian G20 Sherpa and the team of Russian Sherpa Office for these amazing opportunities.

Green Growth Forum, Berlin

§  In addition, we held the Green Growth Forum in Berlin, collecting not only views and opinions from individuals and representatives of corporations, but also research material on the important matter of sustainable development and implications on the energy-turnaround which we assembled in a communiqué.

§  This activity was highly supported by the German Federal Government and the Minister of Environment Peter Altmaier.

G20 Insights with Prof. Dr. Dr. Radermacher, Frankfurt

§  Another highlight was the start of our speakers-series “G20 Insights” with Prof. Dr. Dr. Radermacher, Club of Rome.

§  In ”G20 Insights” we are featuring high-profile individuals in order to gain insights in the G20-process and facilitate the discussion between members of the G20 Foundation and relevant stakeholders.

§  We would also kindly thank Prof. Dr. Dr. Radermacher for his inspiring contribution and the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management for providing an excellent venue for this high level event.

Global Strategy Workshop, Frankfurt

§  Being involved in G20-matters for more than three years, we also felt the time had come to re-evaluate the experiences of the past and set the goals for the next years.

§  Therefore we held a three-day global kick-off meeting in Frankfurt together with our colleagues from the hubs in New York, Turin, Izmir and Berlin.

Moving Forward

§  Through our activities, we have experienced a lot of interest in joining and supporting the G20 Foundation. This year our global team has grown a lot, attracting people from diverse backgrounds, all with a unique set of skills which they contribute to our work.

2013 - an amazing year for G20 Foundation


By enhancing the Outreach dialogue with non-G20 states, international organizations, business circles, labour unions, civil society, future leaders, academia and think-tanks, we will not only ensure legitimacy, transparency and efficiency of the G20, but also expand our vision, come up with better solutions, and generate cross-sectoral synergy to enhance the public benefit of the G20.

Russian G20 Presidency

§  In the forefront of the G20 summit, the Russian presidency announced to set a special focus on growth related topics such as growth through quality jobs and investment, growth through trust and transparency and growth through effective regulation.

§  Unlike preceding presidencies, the Russian G20 presidency set a special focus on including a wide range of different parties and Outreach groups in the decision process.

§  Following our analysis of the Outreach groups’ recommendations and the final Leaders’ Declaration, we can state that the G20 have great opportunities to become the leading forum for solving long-term and short-term global problems. The G20 Foundation supports the G20 by integrating the different stakeholders of the G20 decision process like the Outreach groups as a neutral and non-partisan process enabler.

§  The G20 Foundation participated at the G20 summit to build up important relationships, for example with the Turkish delegation. As Turkey will take over the G20 Presidency in 2015, it is a member of the G20 Troika right now.


Conference on Russian G20 Presidency, Moscow

§  A conference on "Fostering Economic Growth and Sustainability" was held in Moscow on December 13, 2012, within the framework of the Russian G20 presidency. Russia officially unveiled the priorities of its G20 presidency.

§  In addition, the outcome of the first events within the framework of the Russian presidency was reported. These are the outreach Think 20, Civil 20 and Business 20 meetings, which were held on December 11 and 12. There were also reports from Youth 20 and Labor 20 representatives.

§  The conference featured a press occasion with featuring head of the Expert Directorate of the President of the Russian Federation, Russian G20 Sherpa Ksenia Yudaeva and Deputy Minister of Finance of the Russian Federation Sergei Storchak.


G20 Civil Summit, Moscow

§  The Civil 20 Summit was held in Moscow's President Hotel on June 13-14, 2013. It was attended by over 350 representatives of civil society, international organizations, business community, government officials, and the media. Civil society was represented by the delegates from the G20 countries and NGOs, academics from working groups that prepared the C20 recommendations, the Global NGO Group and the Civil Society Group. The Civil Communiqué - an address to the G20 Leaders - was agreed on the results of the Summit.

§  The Civil 20 Summit is the concluding event of the Civil Track of Russia's G20 Presidency. Russia is the first presiding country to organize the civil society consultations process in this format, and at such level. Its main goal is to promote fruitful dialogue between global civil society, politicians and decision-makers on the basis of the priorities set out in the official agenda for 2013. The Civil 20 recommendations are expected to influence the G20 Summit agenda and Leaders' final Communiqué.

G20 Conference on Commodity and Energy Markets, St. Petersburg

§  The Conference on commodity and energy markets "Sustainable energy: designing policy for G20", preceding the Second Energy Sustainability Working Group (ESWG) Meeting, took place on July 8, 2013 in St. Petersburg.

§  The event brought together high level officials from the G20 governments, representatives of the international organizations, top level business and industry representatives, as well as representatives of think tanks and academia, to summarize the ESWG activities in 2013 and look into the future G20 work in the energy field.

§  The Conference agenda was focused on such issues, as prospects of energy and commodity markets sustainability; policies to promote inclusive green growth and pave the path towards a sustainable energy of the future; improving transparency and functionality of commodity markets; and encouraging investment into sustainable energy.

G20 Leaders‘ Summit, St. Petersburg

§  On September 5-6, 2013 the G20 Leaders' Summit was held in St.Petersburg. The Summit, which is the culmination of the Russian Presidency year, marked the 5th anniversary of the G20 at the Leaders' level.

§  The key objective of the G20 at this moment, given the continuing instability at the financial markets, unemployment remaining high and persistent global imbalances, is fostering strong, sustainable and balanced growth. To get closer to attaining this goal, Russia has set forth a number of tasks for the G20 to stimulate economic growth and job creation, primarily through encouraging long-term investment, ensuring trust and transparency at the markets and enhancing effective regulation.

§  Leaders' attention at their meeting was mainly focused on the issues of ensuring economic growth and financial stability, quality job creation and tackling unemployment, searching for the new sources of growth and investment financing, as well as strengthening multilateral trade and international development assistance.

G20 Foundation had a great opportunity to join the executive organizing team at G20 Summit in St. Petersburg and gained unique hands on experience supporting the operative implementation of this top-level event.


Green Growth Forum 2013, Berlin

§  The Green Growth Forum, held in Germany’s capital Berlin, was introduced 2013. The conference was highly sought after and attracted participants from economy, academia, civil society and non-government organizations.

§  In two working-groups, the participants developed recommendations dealing with "sustainable development" and "energy reform & efficiency" and submitted them to the federal government afterwards.

§  The G20 Foundation understands itself as a non-partisan intermediary of different interests, designed to help facilitate the dialogue between the stakeholders on both G20 and national level. Therefore, the Green Growth Forum is an example of how we support this dialogue with our organization.

§  The substantial preparation took place in cooperation with the responsible experts of the Ministry of Economy and Technology, the Ministry of Environment and the Office of the Federal Chancellor. The results of the Green Growth Forum were documented in a comprehensive communiqué. The Federal Minister for Environment, Nature Conservation and Reactor Security, Peter Altmaier demonstrated the federal government’s support by providing a word of welcome for the final communiqué.

Thrilling discussion in the working groups of Green Growth Forum



§  Prof. Dr. Dr. Radermacher, member of the Club of Rome, was the first key-note speaker at our "G20 Insights" series.

§  In ”G20 Insights” we are featuring high-profile individuals in order to gain insights in the G20-process and facilitate the discussion between members of the G20 Foundation and relevant stakeholders.

§  Prof. Radermacher, who holds the chair for artificial intelligence at the University of Ulm, pointed out how important it is to build up an efficient structure of global governance.

§  In his opinion, the G20 member states could fill the existing gap between the United Nations and the G8. On the one hand, they have fewer members to coordinate than the United Nations and can therefore work more efficiently; on the other hand, the G20 are representing two thirds of the world population and about 90 percent of world’s economic power and hence have a greater legitimacy than smaller groups like the G8.

§  In the following, Prof. Radermacher also underlined that a system of global governance should act in accordance with the big majority of the world’s population and of upcoming generations.

§  Decision makers from economy and civil society, entrepreneurs and political actors were present at the first event of our speaker-series. The participants were highly encouraged after Prof. Dr. Dr. Radermacher’s keynote to develop ideas of how to implement their goals into the G20 process and how to take responsibility for society.

§  We would also kindly thank Prof. Dr. Dr. Radermacher for his inspiring contribution and the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management for providing an excellent venue for this high level event.

§  During the global kick-off in October, G20 Foundation-members from USA, Turkey, Italy and Germany travelled to our headquarter in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

§  The purpose of this workshop was to assess the experiences of the past three years of being involved in G20 matters and set the goals for the future. The first day gave the members an introduction of what the G20 Foundation had been focusing on in the past while on the second day the strategy of the G20 Foundation for the upcoming years was defined. This strategy was broken-down into more details during the final day of the gathering.

§  Although the G20 Foundation-members come from different countries and various backgrounds, we take pride in the fact that these three days were coined by a concentrated and friendly working-atmosphere and a common understanding of the G20 Foundation’s objective to create a framework for better global governance.

Going Global

§  With a clear vision in mind to take our idea to all G20 countries and beyond, we attended several symposia and events, among them the G8 Young Summit in London, the Brussels Economic Forum in Brussels, the Nobel Peace Prize Laureates Summit in Warsaw, the World Public Forum “Dialogue of Civilizations” in Rhodes, the Annual Curators Meeting at World Economic Forum in Geneva and the Nexus Youth Summits in London and New York.

§  At each of these unique events we shared our idea with extraordinary global citizens, change makers, entrepreneurs, and philanthropists. We managed to build collaborations through these networks which enable us to grow further and being heard by more governments and other global institutions.

§  We would greatly thank all our friends and partners for giving us the stage for spreading our ideas and are looking forward to meeting all of these amazing change makers in 2014!


G8 Young Summit, London

§  The G8 Young Summit is an annual summit that occurs prior to the formal G8 meeting of the Heads of State of the respective countries. The G8 YS Summits are held in order to prepare a set of solutions and recommendations to be spread across the World and to be shared globally, specifically, with the G8 Heads of State.

§  To build and engage the leaders of tomorrow to help one another achieve a better the world we live in. These like-minded global innovators and change makers will collaborate to address the challenges of tomorrow, today.

Brussels Economic Forum, Brussels

§  The Brussels Economic Forum has become one of the key debate forums on economic matters at international level. In the light of the recent European situation the focus for 2013 was on the EU’s Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) and its further development.

§  Several members of the G20 Foundation attended this event, in which they discussed the upcoming projects and goals of the Foundation with key decision makers such as officials from national governments, EU and international institutions, as well as leading academics and business leaders.

§  Representatives from the European Commission, WTO, ECB, IMF, OEC included:

Nexus Global Youth Summit, New York

§  Nexus is a global movement of 1000+ young investors, social entrepreneurs and allies who work to increase and improve philanthropy and social impact investing.

§  The third annual Nexus Global Youth Summit on Innovative Philanthropy and Social Entrepreneurship convened at the United Nations in New York City, 24-27 July, 2013. Bringing together young philanthropists, investors, social entrepreneurs and allies from over 60 countries, the Summit aims to inspire new leadership, greater generosity and more strategic investing in social and environmental projects.

§  We are truly grateful to Rachel and Jonah, the Co-founders of Nexus for inviting us and giving us the possibility to share our thoughts on the future of governance with this extraordinary group of leaders.

World Public Forum “Dialogue of Civilizations”, Rhodes

§  Every autumn since 2003 the ancient Greek island of Rhodes hosts a session of the World Public Forum «Dialogue of Civilizations» called the Rhodes Forum that brings together public figures and statesmen, academics, clerics and representatives of the arts, mass media and businesses from all over the world.

§  The sessions of the WPF «Dialogue of Civilizations» proved the urgency and efficacy of the Forum by bringing the focus of world public opinion to the problems of intercultural dialogue and the need to work out instruments to make interaction among cultures and civilizations possible. The results achieved by the Forum encourage hope for further harmonization of international relations and strengthen stability in the world

§  We would like to thank Vladimir Yakunin and Dr. Walter Schwimmer for the very kind invitation and looking forward to join WPF in 2014.

The World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates, Warsaw

§  This year’s Summit was held in Warsaw between October 21st and 23rd . The event was attended by such prominent guests as His Holiness 14th Dalai Lama, former Polish President Lech Wałęsa, former USSR President Mikhail Gorbachev, former President of South Africa Frederik Willem de Klerk, Iranian lawyer Shirin Ebadi, Irish peace activists Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan, Muhammad Yunus, originator of the concept of microcredit as well as representatives of Nobel Peace Prize awarded organisations. A special guest of the Summit was Samia Nkrumah, social activist and daughter of the first President of Ghana.

§  This year’s Peace Summit Award was presented to the actress Sharon Stone for her “activities that brought solidarity and new hope to the millions of people who have fought and are fighting against the tragedy of HIV/AIDS”.

§  We would like to thank Mazda for the very kind invitation and Burson-Marsteller for the brilliant arrangements.

The Australian G20 Presidency

§  The challenge for the G20 in 2014 will be to make concrete decisions and take real steps that will improve people’s lives through stronger growth, more jobs and better infrastructure. As Australia holds the chair of the G20 in 2014, the Honorable Tony Abbott MP, Prime minister of Australia is asking the world leaders to come to Brisbane with a commitment to take action.

§  We support the Australian Prime minister in his appeal and underline the importance of developing and emerging economies working together, as well as igniting partnership between governments, and the G20 stakeholders.*

§  We are looking forward to a fruitful cooperation with Australian Presidency and Outreach Groups in 2014!
