NC Department of Justice Environmental Grants

Linkhttp://www.ncdoj.gov/Top-Issues/Improving-the-Environment/Environmental-Grants.aspx

OVERVIEW:

Attorney General Roy Cooper awards grants annually to projects that will help improve our water quality.   These grants help to preserve land along our rivers, restore wetlands, clean up hog lagoons and find alternative uses for hog waste.

Since the  program began, Cooper has awarded more than $21 million to 84 projects. So far, these projects have resulted in the closure of 213 animal waste lagoons and the restoration or permanent conservation of more than 20,000 acres of land and wildlife habitat, as well as several environmental education and research initiatives. The EEG Program seeks to improve the air, water and land quality of North Carolina by funding environmental projects that address the goals of the agreement between Smithfield and the Attorney General. The EEG Program funds projects to restore and protect impaired, degraded or endangered surface waters, groundwater and other natural resources. In addition, the EEG Program promotes long-term environmental enhancement programs to conserve and protect targeted natural areas. Because North Carolina’s environmental enhancement needs will change over the 25 years of funding, the EEG Program is designed to be flexible and to shift priorities depending on the needs identified each year.

faq.asp

OVERVIEW:

The Foundation is looking for unique project ideas to reach recreational boaters with safety and/or clean boating messages. Information designed for boaters and delivered to boaters should be a key component of the project, not an afterthought. The Foundation is especially interested in projects that result in behavior changes in the boating community and are not solely about passive exposure to safe and clean boating messages. Projects should be planned to get wide exposure in the local community, and be replicated by others. The maximum grant request allowed is $10,000. Although applicants are free to request the maximum funding amount, the Grant Committee reserves the right to fund all or part of the proposed project. If changes are made to the funding request, the Grant Administrator will notify applicants of these changes before the application is posted online for voting. The best applications submitted will be posted for public voting in the Spring. Grant applicants will have several weeks to promote their project and encourage others to vote. After voting concludes, Foundation staff will notify the grant recipients and complete the required contracts. If a group receives a grant, they will be expected to complete all grant-related work within 12 months.

ROC Grant Program Focus

Grants will fund projects related to the WF mission of supporting sustainable fishing and marine protected areas (MPAs). This includes sub-themes of:

Scientific research. Includes natural science or social science projects. For example, collecting baseline data before coastal development or MPA establishment, or studying fishery effects of a natural (e.g. tsunami) or man-made (e.g. oil spill) disaster. As appropriate (e.g., if AUVs/ROVs are involved), project execution could be organized in collaboration with WI.

Page 23: G14AS00014 - East Carolina University · Web viewThe Coca-Cola Foundation is our Company's primary international philanthropic arm. Founded in 1984, the Foundation was established

Policy. Includes opportunistic projects around unique public policy windows, such as preparation of policy analysis and support of experts’ efforts to inform decision makers on upcoming government actions. For example, a cost-benefit analysis of proposed fishing regulations, or travel expenses for a delegation of scientists to educate elected officials.

Management. Includes enforcement and infrastructure support. For example, stop-gap funding to increase enforcement capacity in light of a sudden uptick in illegal dynamite fishing, or training personnel to enforce new regulations about to go into effect.

Communications. Includes raising public awareness and engaging stakeholders, including advertizing by a 501(c)3 group around a public policy moment. For example, a PR blitz (e.g. billboards or radio adds) to educate the public in advance of a vote on an ocean conservation measure, or training local people to become citizen scientists or enforcement tipsters.

OVERVIEW:

Under state law, revenue from sales of N.C. Coastal Recreational Fishing Licenses goes in two separate funds, both set up specifically to be used to manage, protect, restore, develop, cultivate and enhance the marine resources of the state. The Marine Resources Endowment Fund receives revenues from the sale of lifetime CRFLs. The Marine Resources Fund receives revenues from the sale of all other CRFLs.

The Marine Resources Fund supports the N.C. Coastal Recreational Fishing License Grant Program. Each year, the MFC and the WRC issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) for consideration of funding.

The Strategic Plan for the Conservation and Improvement of North Carolina Marine Resources sets forth a framework of objectives and strategies to meet the statutory requirement that the fund be used to manage, protect, restore, develop, cultivate and enhance the marine resources of the state. The framework provides the basis upon which to evaluate and select proposals for CRFL funding. Example priority research needs have been compiled based on priority needs in Fishery Management Plans (FMPs) approved by the Marine Fisheries Commission, issues identified in the Coastal Habitat Protection Plan (CHPP), and research needs identified
