writing creatively ad through self-expression. My influences are boundless as my work is a constant embark of searching for new aspects of inspiration. My work over the past two years has always linked back to the creativity and meaning behind a piece of work, this is something I find more prominent in poetry due to the often blatant passion expressed within the word choice. I find myself drawn to this form as I crave this very open style of writing, I feel this is when I am most able to showcase and practice my skills whilst also producing self-satisfying work. For this project I am also thinking of experimenting with a theme. I would like to raise money for charity by holding m small poetry event, this would give me the chance to have a poem focused on this subject matter allowing me to show my ability to write for a purpose as well as generating funds and an awareness for a greater cause. This would also provide me with a great sense of achievement as my work could have the power to positively effect change. The point of my project is to look at the ways writing can affect our emotions, and to identify if being at a live performance can impact on these feelings. This will lead on to my skills development in the media industry as I take on the processes of professional production to produce a performance.Section 2: Project Concept (approx. 200 words)For this project I have been thinking about the audience perspective and how writing can effect an audience. In this project I aim to discover if poetry is more affective when read aloud. To do this I will be holding my own poetry reading night. To accompany this I would like to create an online Flip book to present my work. I have been influenced by many poets, such as Shane Koyczan, these influences will shape and mould much of my own work. To achieve the results I want I plan to do extensive research into poets, performance, staging and venues as well as exploring themes and visiting live performances, again this will influence my work and help me to establish my target audience. My target audience is currently at a demographic of people aged 16-30. For this project I will take on the role of events planner, writer, poet, performer and producer.
Section 3: Evaluation (approx. 150 words)I plan to evaluate my work as an ongoing project. This will be done through my weekly blog posts and updates. In these blog posts my work will be deconstructed. This will allow me to look at all attributes of my project and think about the improvements I can make. As well as thinking about being able to outline what is going well in my project and the types of improvements I can make, this method of evaluating my work weekly will help me to stay on task and keep track of where I am in the production of my project. I also hope this can be a way of documenting my idea development. As I begin my project my original ideas will be built on further, this will be through the influence found in my research, feed-back and my own decisions. As my project takes shape I will be able to track that process and identify all the different ways my project has both adhered to my original thoughts and developed positively.
Proposed Research Sources and Bibliography (Harvard Format)
This section provides an opportunity to record the initial research sources, both primary and secondary, that you intend to use.Your sources of research should be as wide as possible and could include libraries, galleries, books, theatre, cinema visits, films, videos, magazines, films, TV and Radio programmes, computer games, websites, blogs, social media, radio programmes, archive material, and other media and multi-media sources etc. Make sure you use Harvard referencing. The bibliography should be continuously updated as the project progresses.

Introduction
This document is a project portfolio for my final major project UAL Extended Diploma in Creative Media. My project aims to explore performance poetry and how poetry can affect an audience. To do this I will be holding my own poetry night in front of an audience. I also plan to create a flip book to have my poems written down. This first chapter of my portfolio details my journey towards this project as well as the background of it. To begin with I have focused on myself and how I fit into my FMP. To conclude this chapter will be my research plan.
The Background of my Project Use those questions as a headings for your answers:
What is it that makes me do my project? For two years on the course I have been enabled to explore a wide range of writing mediums and practice many skills and techniques. Personally I have always been driven more towards creative writing as I enjoy free writing and find myself more emotionally connected to my writing.
My personal experiences that influence my choices (idea for the project, my role in the project, how it relates to my future career) Over this time I have been exposed to many influences that have gone on to shape the choices I make in my own writing. From these influences I have been led to poetry. For this project I will be taking on many production roles: Writer, editor, events planner. By practicing taking on these roles it opens my career path, not just in writing but in the editing world and the background of production.

Department of Media and Communication
What is the basic premise of my project? My project focuses on exploring poetry as a performance art. This is driven by my desire to understand my favourite medium in further detail and gaining knowledge of what makes poetry so effective for an audience.
What do I seek to achieve and how it relates to my target audience? For this project I want to discover if poetry is more effective for an audience when read aloud. This is relevant to my target audience of people aged 16+ as I believe that poetry has recently entered a new era of popularity. By thinking about what platform makes my work more effective for my audience I can produce work that will be more accessible for them.
Who am I? For two years I have explored writing whilst on this course. My passion for writing comes from my tendency to have a natural ability within writing. I have always enjoyed creative writing more than fictional and therefore I am more motivated through writing short stories, films and poetry. My biggest influences are often films. I find myself very inspired after watching a good film. From being on this course I have picked up an ability to always look out for techniques being used, even if I am just watching a film. These techniques are not always focused on the crafting of writing but often camera shots and staging as well. For this project I was to create a piece of work that will represent me and my passion for creative writing.
What did I learn on my course? In order for my project to be successful I will need to put all the knowledge and skills I have gained over the two year course. At the beginning of the course I was aware of my natural writing ability but not aware of the background skills when crafting writing. Crafting within writing is about using literacy tools and devices to craft and model a piece of work until it is finished just as envisioned. Over the course I have gained more experience in using skills, such as extended metaphor, similes and plot to craft my pieces of work. This also includes experimenting with theme and form to understand how a different form can change a piece of work. This is all part of the crafting process. We explored different mediums in year one, from radio writing to non-fiction journalism. By looking into these different platforms I was not only able to identify what filed I am strongest in, but also understand the processes and skills used by the writers within these mediums. Much of the course I based around research and discovering influences. Research has been important when I think about my knowledge of crafting skills development. When researching I can pull on and outline the various things the writer is using to make their work more effective. By understanding this I have been able to reflect their skills in my own work as I learn how to use them in an effective way. At the start of the course I was unprepared to take on roles such as editor but now I feel more confident after learning across two years. I have also gained extensive skills in Photoshop and InDesign, programs I previously struggled to access.
What is my project about? My project focuses on the effects of poetry, in particular if poetry in more affective when read out loud and preformed rather the read from a book by the reader themselves. For my FMP I will be holding my own poetry night where I preform my own work to a live audience. I plan to film this and

ask people to fill out surveys. By creating a paper copy of my poems I can then ask for feedback from the audience to contrast whether or not , poetry is in fact more affective when read live by the poet.
My role is this project is:
Researcher Performer Writer Editor Event planner Film creator Film editor
Why my project is important? My project aims to deliver poetry in the most effective way possible. I think it is important to discover the best way to access pieces of work and the best way to present them. I also think it is important as it takes a traditional art, form, poetry, one that has influenced people for many years and revamps it to make it accessible for modern people and modern culture. Poetry can be used as a tool to implicate change through protests and projects making it an important and still relevant form of writing.
My Research Plan
Use your research plan information from Unit 12 to complete this section
Table 3- My Research Plan
FMP - RESEARCH PLAN No of Words
Interest/Topic/Theme 150For this project I will be exploring performance poetry, in particular I will be looking at these subjects:
Interviews- I will conduct interviews with m target audience (16+) In order to
understand how they already feel about my topic and form. This will help me to
create work aimed specifically at them, making it more accessible whilst also
testing to see if I aim aiming towards the right target demographic.
Surveys- I will create surveys aimed and presented on an online platform. By
doing this I can establish my target audience and their preferences relating to
poetry and form. Overall this will impact on the way I write and who I write for.
Research into poetic influences- This part of my research will relate to looking
into existing industry examples. This will help me to understand different writing

styles as well as analysing the poetic devices being used as well as other crafting
techniques I can translate into my own work.
Rap as a part of poetry- By thinking about how rap music relates to poetry I am
branching off and thinking about the components of poetry and rhythm. This
will help me pick out these factors more and relate them to my audience.
Attending poetry readings- This will allow me to see first-hand what it’s like to
see live poetry and the atmosphere. By doing this I can not only understand why
poetry can hold an audience but also think about how I can perform as
effectively.
Performance and performance poetry (form) - In this part of my research I will
be looking mainly at the key elements and back ground of performance. This will
help me to see if staging and lighting will play a role in my project.
Venues- For this, I am keen to know if the place and setting of a reading would
have an effect on the emotions of an audience. This will translate to my project
when I think about how I want my audience to feel in my atmosphere.
Why is it important? - Importance 100
This is a short version of the chapter above.
My research question(s) 100For this project I am asking the main question: ‘Why should poetry be performed’
11
![Page 12: gracegeorgejournalism.files.wordpress.com · Web viewFor this unit I am going to explore performance poetry. I plan to do this by holding my own poetry reading. I would like to](https://reader036.fdocuments.in/reader036/viewer/2022071116/5ffed3f5b8e93757d7509b53/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)

Research Design 100For this project I will be researching a range of different topics associated to my project.
I will be conducting interviews with the general public to understand how they feel about poetry and live poetry. I will also be contacting existing poets to get a clear idea of their writing processes and further my knowledge in the field of poetry.
I will be conducting some online surveys to get a general view point of my target audience and how they feel towards poetry.
By doing research into poetic influences I can learn about crafting techniques and poetic devices that are used by my favourite poets, allowing me to access these skills myself.
By attending live poetry myself, I can gain an idea of what it’s like to be both in the audience and the poet. This will help me when I think about my own reading.
From looking at performance as an art I will be able to outline the key features that make a performance affective.
The study of different venues allows me to see if certain venues play a role in how an audience is affected during a performance.

Research Questions
At the start of this process I began my research by creating a mind map. This mind map helped me to
branch out my thoughts further. By doing this I was able to identify new paths and topics relating to
my question. I have then chosen the routes I wanted to explore in relation to my research and
chosen topic.
(Mind map)
Primary research
From this I have then thought about my primary research. I think that primary research has been
very important to my research by allowing me to get first hand opinions on how my target audience
feels. This primary research was done conducted through the form of surveys and interviews. I first

created a short survey, On the Survey Monkey site. After creating the survey I then presented it on
and online platform (Facebook). For the other section of my primary research I wanted to conduct a
few interviews. In these interviews I asked open questions and interacted with my target audience.

Secondary research
Performance and poetry
As I moved on from primary research to secondary, I thought it would be good to start by thinking
about performance as an art within itself. I researched online to find out what makes a good
performance and what kind of elements make a performance. I then began to think about the art of
performance in context of my project. I wanted to see how poetry fits into performance. Again I
searched online for connections between the two.
https://gracegeorgejournalism.wordpress.com/2018/02/21/unit-12-research-into-performance-
performance-poetry/
Rap and poetry
Poetry is one of my favourite forms. I often can associate it with other mediums such as music, from
this I began to think about whether rap can be considered a form of poetry. I first wrote about my
opinion on this topic. My search then lead me to an online platform. I looked at various rap artists
and their work with poetry outside of rap, whilst also looking at the origins of hip-hop to understand
the history behind the genre and know what drives the writing.
https://gracegeorgejournalism.wordpress.com/2018/02/23/unit-12-exploring-rap-poetry/
Venues and staging
My question asks why poetry should be performed. For the next stage of my secondary research I
wanted to explore if venues and staging have an effect on an audience. To begin with I had brief
ideas on why I think that venues can effect an audiences emotions and impact on the way they
intake the poetry. I then went online to research poetry venues near my area. This gave me an idea
of what sort of venues exist. I then explored how lighting and sound can affect the atmosphere in a

venue. As well as looking online I recently went to a poetry reading in my local book store, this again
gave me a first-hand experience.

Poetic influences
For this project I think it has been vital to know what poets and poetry is impacting and influencing
my writing. So I began this section of research by thinking about the type of poetry I prefer to read
and listen. I decided to research my favourite spoken word poet in more depth. I looked YouTube
first. This is how I would normally access his work. I found that he actually explained his thought
process about a particular poem in the description. As I listened I picked out the techniques and
skills he was using within his work. I was also able to think about how he holds his audience and
affects through his writing. After this I began to branch out into various other poets. From a
suggestion I found Lemn Sissay. Again I accessed his work through YouTube. Just as before I picked
out the elements of his poetry. This time I was able to compare his work in relation to Shane
Koyczan.

https://gracegeorgejournalism.wordpress.com/2018/03/12/unit-12-poetic-influences/
Live performance
I decided that as part of my research I wanted to attend a live performance. This was both to gain an
understanding of how poetry can affect an audience, but also to see first-hand what poetry is like
when performed to a small audience as I plan to perform myself. After this performance she spoke
to the audience about writing and he thoughts.

and genres my audience would be more interested in hearing about. The main focus of the survey
was to identify if poetry is relevant and to what audience. I then moved on to interviews. I asked
people round my college some of their opinions on poetry and poetry topics as well as if they think it
should be a performance art. I recorded these interviews to reflect back on them. From doing these
interviews I identified that my audience would prefer poetry to read aloud. The interviews also
confirmed the feedback I gained from my survey. Both interviews and survey reflected each other in
terms of topics my audience want to hear about and how they want to receive it. This has directly
influenced my project as I now know that in order to reach my target audience I should write about
a topic they are particularly interested in. however this has not put me off exploring other topics. By
knowing what my audience like to listen to or read I am able to target pieces of writing at them and
know it will be affective.
Performance and poetry
When I looked into performance as an art at the start of my research, I discovered what sort of
elements are used in any type of performance. This includes understanding that voice projection and
tone is vital when thinking about performance. From doing this aspect of my research I identified
what sort of techniques I will need to include to create a performance. When I then related this
research to poetry, and looked into how to create performance poetry, I found that a lot of the same
techniques a theatre performer would use, can be used in a poetry performance. I have now
outlined the roll of the performer, one that is less about the actual poetry but more about how you
influence an audience through action and atmosphere. This has helped me to think about myself as

a performer. As I am trying to ask why poetry should be performed, it has been helpful to know how
I can enhance my performance and improve audience connection.
Rap and poetry
This section of my research was a bit hit and miss. It has been interesting to discover the origins of
Hip-hop and draw connections between rap and poetry. From doing this research I have linked rap
and techniques a rap artist uses to the same techniques a poet would use. I started this research by
trying to identify if rap is in fact a form of poetry. When I looked at the history of rap I found that it
related to the culture of America at the time. This helped me to think about what sorts of influences
can affect what people write about. By using the culture around us, we can write in a different
context. I also found that rap is often associated with aggression or free expression. When thinking
about this in relation to my topic I think that knowing not to be afraid to speak with free expression
can enhance writing, I draw this conclusion as I find rap is increasingly popular within our own
culture. For my own project I can take forward the understanding of how rap is created and the skill
of identifying what words work with each other to create impact.
Venue and staging
As my project developed further I began to think about the other types of things that affect an
audience. I decided to look into venues and staging as I figured if I can understand the sorts of things
that affect an audience I can make my own performance affective, but also try and identify if
someone would enjoy poetry being performed or simply reading poetry for themselves. I managed
to discover that certain venues can affect the emotions of a person. The venue can be used to
change the atmosphere in a performance. For example I think that if you were performing in a
castle, the atmosphere can be gloomier or put an audience on edge. This research has helped me to
think about my own performance and the type of atmosphere I want to create in from my work. I
think it is interesting how where you choose to perform can have a knock on effect on how an
audience perceives a piece of work being read to them. I then linked this research to the staging of
performances. I looked at the effects lighting choice can have on an audience. Lighting can effect
mood and people associate certain colours or coloured lighting with certain moods, this all ties into

how a performance can identify with the audience. In my own project I plan to use the information I
have learnt through this research to insure I am making my audience feel how I want them to feel.
For example if I am reading a more emotionally striking piece I may want to dim the lights and
change the overall atmosphere.
Poetic influences
As a writer I know it is important to think about the different writers that are changing and
influencing my own work, through theirs. I decided to look at some of my favourite poets in depth.
By understanding the techniques they are using I can learn how to develop my own skills through
practice of similar, if not the same, techniques. I thought about many writing skills being used when
looking at their work. For example I found that Shane Koyczan uses extended metaphors and
eventually brings them full circle to link back to his main ideas. I found that Lemn Sissay talked
positively and used rhyme as a base for many of his poems. This also links with how these poets
thrive not only as writers but as performers. When doing this research I also looked at how the poets
were reading their work. By adopting a certain tone to suit a certain poem the poet conveys
different feelings. I have found that they tend to ‘read up’. This keeps an audience interested. This
research will help advance my project a great deal. I think this has been very important in relation to
my project because when I understand what techniques and skills are affective I can adopt them
myself in hopes to include the characteristics in my own work. I will be pushing myself to develop
these skills to match those who I admire.
Live performance
After recently going to see a live performance I was able to get a first-hand idea of what it’s like to be
a member of the audience. This experience has been very helpful when thinking about my project.
From speaking and listening to the poet I have a new understanding about where she draws ideas
from. It was particularly good to have her writing process explained to me. I know that not all writers
go through the same process when writing, but it is comforting to know that it takes time and
moulding until you get where you want to. In terms of effect on the audience it was interesting to
see how she performed. She kept it lively, sometimes going off track and mentioning anecdotes from

her life to set up the following poem really helped with audience connection and involvement. Now
that I have had this experience I would like to bring a lot of the same elements into my own. She was
relaxed and able to have fun and be confident with her work, this was great from an audience
perspective as I felt involved, I felt like I knew her and could easily identify with what she was saying.
This would be great if I could reflect it in my own performance as I want my audience to leave
equally as for filled
Conclusion
Primary research:
For my primary research I conducted a short survey and some interviews. By doing this research I
have been able to identify my target audience. Through my interviews I have narrowed down some
particular genres that are more popular within this target audience. My survey consisted of closed
questions. This helped to condense the data and get very vivid answers to my questions. This
research has been a key element to my project so far as by knowing my target audience and their
preferences I know the steps I can take within my writing to be more appealing for them. This
outlines the start to the development of skills that involve writing with an audience in mind rather
than just for personal pleasure. If I were to conduct further surveys I would aim to make the
questions even more specific to my project and for my interviews I would have liked to branch out to
different areas to get a broader generalisation of feelings among my audience.
Performance and poetry:
Looking at performance as a general topic opened my mind to the elements that can go into
performance. From this I gathered an idea of how voice projection, staging and lighting are key parts
of performances. Although this was very interesting and I gained a lot of new information I don’t
consider it an extremely relevant piece of research when relating it back to my own project. I think
this is because there are some main differences with performance and performance poetry. By
looking at it in a broader sense I have learnt how to entertain more however I think that certain
factors of poetry counteract some of this information. Now that I have been to see a live poetry
reading I can see that it’s a lot more conversational and relaxed rather than bold and impressive.

Rap and poetry:
This part of my research took me on a tangent of understanding what makes poetry, poetry. From
looking at the origins of rap and hip-hop artists work within rap and poetry I have concluded that rap
can be considered as rhythmic poetry. I think this as from my research it is clear that the links
between rap and poetry are strong. Whilst looking into this subject I found that the strong back
ground of hip-hop can be shown through the word choice in raps. I find that poetry in often driven
by passion/strong feelings towards a subject. The way these subjects are presented are free
expression, likewise to poetry. This research is relevant to my project as it’s developed my skill in
knowing the features and characteristic of poetry. It has also inspired my work further as I can listen
to this genre of music and identify the poetry techniques in them.
Venues and staging:
As my research took me deeper into my project I decided to look at more topics that are relevant to
my question. This meant that I was now more focussed on factors that affect an audience. When I
looked into the way staging and venue choice affects an audience I discovered that lighting and
atmosphere can impact on mood almost instantly. This, for me, helped to highlight the importance
of choosing the right setting to accommodate the audience and insure the audience is being affected
the way I would like them to be. When I think about this in context to my project, I have found it to
be a very vital piece of research as I can now avoid creating the wrong atmosphere or influencing the
wrong tone of tension in a room. If I expanded this research more I would visit local poetry venues
to gain a further in person perspective.
Poetic influences:
For me this is a crucial part of my secondary research. I looked into my influences within poetry. This
included in depth research into my favourite poet. From this research I managed to identify various
different skills each poet is using to enhance their work. By looking at this my skills in identifying
have developed as well as opening the door to my own writing development as I experiment with
other writer’s techniques and shape my own work. This is very relevant to my project as my own
writing continues to take form. By understanding my influences I can translate certain skill sets for

my own use. If I revisited this particular branch of research I would explore further poets. I would be
interested to see how a poet can adapt their own work to suit the situation of a poem.
Live performance:
After recently experiencing a live poetry performance I have learnt that a relaxed approach is very
inviting as an audience member. This open a conversationalist atmosphere between the performer
and audience. I found that by feeling more invited and comfortable in the atmosphere I was able to
absorb her words. When I think of how visiting a live performance impacts on my work I think about
how I would also like my audience to feel on the same level as myself. The audience involvement
helps to influence through words. This is also a relevant piece of research as i learnt how this
particular writer goes through her processes to create her work. I learnt about her particular
influences, this was helpful as it contextualised each poem after I discovered exactly what they
related to in her life. I would like to visit more performances like this to build up writers profiles and
learn from individual writers, it would also be interesting to visit different venues and compare them
to one another and how they affect my feelings as an audience member.
Final conclusion:
In this research pack I have identified and analysed my project goals. Using the information I have
learnt has allowed me to marginalise the relevant sources and information that will aid me in my
production. The steps I have taken on this research journey have been divided and can be seen
above. By categorising the information I have been able to retrieve and obtain the most valuable
segments of information such has writing techniques and methods of audience appeal. In conclusion
my research pack summarises all research I have done in relation to the question, why should poetry
be performed?

MY FMP – FINAL PRODUCT
Here present your final FMP media production.
Project Evaluation This is very important part of the project. Please pay attention to every question and make sure to provide relevant examples where appropriate to support your answers.
Critically evaluating your final media project against the agreed requirements and parameters. Answer following questions:
Introduce the project in your words List five strengths and five weaknesses in your final design Was there a theme for the design ideas? Can you describe it? Can you reference any influences here? - Art movements, designers, media companies/campaigns, etc. What experiments and exploration did you do (what happened). How did it affect development of your project? Find a similar type of design publication - place it next to your own - what comparisons/difference can you identify? What were the key areas of development in this project? - use your daily reflections to help you with this. Review your proposal - what changed, what developments did you make, did you manage to complete everything you set out to achieve? What did the client think of your concept? How did that make you feel? What could you do to adapt the work produced to improve and develop it? Is the final work appropriate for the needs of the project? Does it sufficiently answer your brief? Reflect on your pitch to the board; how did you feel about it before? Did it go better or worse than you expected? What was the feedback from your lecturer? What do you think you could improve next time?
