English and Content Editor

We are happy to introduce to you the first edition of our school’s magazine, The Gomezine. This project started when both Anna and I wanted to create a space in which students can share their creativity. The objective of the magazine is to illus-trate and portray our students’ talents and abilities in various areas of interests. We would also like to use this resource as a channel to spread cultural awareness from different parts of the world. In the future, the magazine would be a “bilingual” maga-zine, meaning that it will contain articles in both English and Spanish (and possibly French). This magazine will, hopefully, serve as a portrait of the diversity that IES Gómez Moreno has within its student population. We welcome you to explore, discover and join our magazine and form part of the community of talent that is hidden within our

school.

Sincerely,Editorial Board

What is Black History Month?

In our first edition of The Gomezine, we wanted to in-troduce “Black History Month” to Gómez Moreno. It is a month of African-American/Black culture recognition. It is a month that celebrates great talent that black artists, edu-cators, scientists and inventors have contributed to Ame-rican history and to the world. We not only wanted to co-ver a few contemporary American names, but also people from around the world. It is hard to dedicate a magazine to every single individual that deserves recognition. Therefo-re, we picked a few that you might have heard of or know.

Since 1926, countries like the U.S and Canada have ob-served February 1st to the 28th (UK and the Netherlands, October) to bring light to the achievement of black indivi-duals. Since history has been written by mostly white men, there is a large portion that is untold by minority groups. It has mostly been recognized within education institutions and later on by governments. February was chosen because both Abraham Lincoln’s (16th U.S. President) and Frede-rick Douglass’ (African-American writer, activist and sta-tesmen) birthdays lie on the 12th and 14th, respectively.

We hope these articles spark your interest and encourages you to learn more about these great minds and their history.

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie was born in 1977 and grew up in Nigeria. She studied in different universities and completed a master’s degree in creative writing. Chimamanda is now ma-rried and has a daughter. She divides her time between Nigeria, where she regularly teaches writing workshops, and the United States. She is the author of three novels, Purple Hibis-cus, Half of a Yellow Sun and Americana. Also she wrote a short story collection, The Thing around Your Neck.

Let’s talk about her book “Americanah”

Ifemelu is a young woman from Nigeria that lives in the United States. The

novel begins as she takes the train from New Jersey.

She reminisces and recounts pieces of her life in Nigeria as a child: her stru-ggles with culture, language, money, and hair.

And she remembers her first love

with a young man named Obinze. The story switches to Obinze’s point of view

for portions of the story to describe the difficulties

he faced as an illegal worker in London.

Ifemelu and Obinze must decide where their

friendship and love stand.

What a Mix! English Creole LanguagesBy: Celia Lopez

A creole language is a language developed from a mixture of different languages. When groups of people speaking different languages come together and intermix, a common improvised second language appear, called a pidgin. It allows speakers of two or more non-intelligible native languages to communicate with each other. Subsequently, such a langua-ge can replace the settlers original language and become the first langua-ge of their descendants. This languages are called creoles. The difference between pidgins and creoles is that people grow up speaking creoles as their first language, whereas nobody speaks pidgin as their first langua-ge. The exact number of creole language is not known, but they are about one hundred creole languages since 1500. An English-creole language is a creole language coming from the English language. Most English creo-les were formed in the British colonies, following the great expansion of British military power in the 17th, 18th and 18th centuries. The main types of English creoles are Atlantic (the Americas and Africa) and Paci-fic (Asia and Oceania). They all share a common origin called Porto-Pid-gin English, spoken all along the West African coast (16th century). Over time, creoles develop expanded vocabularies and more complex gram-mar that were not present in the pidgins from which they come from.

Simone Manuel is an American swimmer that has fought a lot to make her dream come true. After a lot of achievements and formidable results she finally made it to the 2016 Rio Olympic games, where she made history. In fact, she won two gold medals and two

silver medals, becoming the first black swimmer from the United States history to do such a feat. What is more, she set an Olympic record along with Penny Oleksiak (Canadian

swimmer).

Simone is 21 years old and she was born in Sugar City, Texas, she comes from a family of athletes. Her father and her two older brothers played college basketball.

Basing on her declarations after winning, she wants to be an inspiration for all that black people that are good at swimming and would like to become professional, as there has

always been a lack of diversity in North American Olympic representation. Even though it has increased considerably in the last decades, the African-American representation still

only amounts 1 percent of USA swimming.

Millions of people have noticed her story and admire her spirit of overcoming, even other professional athletes, such as Serena Williams. Apart from this, all people have discovered

that no matter the race, anyone can get to the top, and even better, that future genera-tions will learn at an early age that race should not limit your dreams.

Super Science The Super Soaker Gun By Claudia Diaz

The Super Soaker Gun was in-vented in 1982 by engineer

Lonnie Johnson. Johnson, an Afri-can American inventor and for-mer US Air Force member, had a long history of inventing. He was the son of a repair man and loved fixing things. Later he competed in a science fair for his high school in Alabama and got a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Tuskegee University.

The first Super Soaker Gun was sold in 1990. Nowadays, it is

used as a toy, therefore it is mainly used by kids and it´s normally used in summer. It hasn’t got a very di-fficult mechanism: you press one button manually and water with a lot of pressure goes out of the gun. The difference between the normal water gun and the Super Soaker Gun is that the second one can throw the water further.

One interesting fact about Super Soaker Gun is that in the first prototype of the gun, the capsu-le where the water is stored was inside the gun but, later on, John-son decided to change the place of it and put it on the outside. This way, the amount of water stored inside the capsule was larger and the time without recharging the capsule with water was longer (this way you could play more time without interruption). Ano-ther interesting fact is that with the pass of the years, these Super Soaker Gun has evolved and has been incorporated different ele-ments (for example: double cham-bers).

Charles Drew was a doctor, surgeon and educator who was born on June 3, 1904 in Washington, D.C. He was an African-American man who developed methods of storing blood plasma (which is blood without cells and lasts much longer than regular blood) in blood banks so it could be used for transfusions when needed. He also managed two big blood banks during World War II.

While receiving his education in medical school, he won a prize in neuroanatomy and became a member in a medical honor society. When he graduated he earned both a Docto-rate of Medicine and a Masters in Surgery.

He started his studies about blood transfu-sion in a university in Montreal with Dr. John Beattie and continued in a New York Hospital

with John Scudder. Later, he developed his method of processing and preserving blood plasma by the discovery of the possibility of blood plasma to be dried and reconstituted when needed.

Afterwards, he presented his thesis “Banked Blood” and received his doctorate degree. Later, he created the two bloods banks: the first was due to help the wounded of the war in Europe, which was known as “Blood for Bri-

tain”; and the second was with the American Red Cross to help the U.S. military personnel.

Some years later the National Association for the Advancement of Coloured People honoured him with a medal for “the highest and noblest achievement” by an African-Ame-rican. At 45 years old, Drew died as a victim of a car accident on April 1, 1950. After his death, he continued being honoured because

of his incredible achievements in science.

Arts & EntertainmentSterling K. Brown: The King of the Golden Globes

By: María CorralesMaybe you know him for doing the role as Christopher Darden in The People, but this amazing Black American actor has done many roles in many series and films. His complete name is Sterling Kelby Brown, he was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1976. He has worked with the best directors, like: Jon Avnet, Rick Famuyiwa, Bart Freundlich, Marc Forster, Jesse Peretz, Stuart Conne-lly…etc. Apart from appearing multiple ti-mes on the cinema, he has done TV series, as Tarzan, Boston Legal, Alias, Hack, Star-ved, Castle, Criminal Minds and a lot more. All work has a reward, and this year he re-ceived his. Brown won a lot during the 2018 award season, including the Golden Globe Award as “The Best Series Actor in a Dra-ma”, for “This Is Us”, but before this he was nominated in 2017 with other series and he has also won two Primetime Emmy Awards.

Viola Davis: television, film and theatre actress. Her list of awards and nominations include: • Primetime Emmy Award

and two Screen Actors Guild Awards for her work in televi-sion.

• An Academy Award, a Bri-tish Academy Film Award, a Golden Globe Award, three Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, and three Screen Actors Guild Awards for her work in films.

• Two Tony Awards and three Drama Desk Awards for her work in theatre.

She has been nominated 199 times, and she has won 93 times of those nominations.

How did she achieve her suc-cess?...Viola Davis was born in August 11,

1965, in South Carolina, but she grew up in Rhode Island, where she began acting. Since the age of 10 she discovered her love for acting and followed her dreams. She started acting in the school, and in several bad theatre plays which drove her to some more important roles in TV series and films. Some TV series she worked in are Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal. Viola Davis had her first appearance in the film Antwone Fisher. You could have seen her in films such as Ender’s Game, Beautiful creatures or Suicide squad.

It is true she had some problems be-cause of being black, but as she has stated: “I’ve had backlash playing a serial killer... Anthony Hopkins didn’t, but I did. I have to follow my heart at the end of the day.”
