The End, Is Often, Just the Beginning! As with all things, the end of this year is also the begin- ning of next year. We’ll all be ripping off that last page of the calendar and saying, “where did the year go?” The months fly by and the GSCA Board can look back at a long list of ac- complishments, and an equally long list of unfinished business. As one list ends, another be- gins. Older dogs pass away and are missed more than most of us care to say, but that new puppy has to go out and so we take him for a walk, laugh at his goofy puppies, cry a little for our lost friend, and we all carry on. One chapter closes, another begins. So it is, also, with our friends, family and judges. We have lost some of all of these in the last year. But you know, we’ll make new friends, sched- ule that visit to our family for dinner and notice some new faces on the judges at the dog shows. None of this means we won’t miss the ones who have gone. It just gives us a healthy look-back at good times and bad with the family and friends. As for the judges who have gone, they have set the bar very high for the next generation and we need to welcome the new- comers with open arms into our show rings. Take a minute to say “Hell-o” when you see someone new in the grooming area, in the x-pens or in the show ring. I have written in this space at other times about listening to our dogs and learning from them. Dogs move on faster than we do, and easier. They had to, if they were going to survive in the wild. They had to make their peace and move on. We would be served well to pay attention to this lesson and learn from it. I know it will take some practice and some time, but on the worst days, there’s nothing like a new friend who needs to go for a walk, chase a ball and thinks you’re the best thing that ever came into his/ her life! And, you know what, you can prove them right. Listen to your dog, say your “good-byes” and then say “hell- o.” On a personal note, 2014 will be the last year of my term as president. This is a very good time to start thinking of who you would like to elect in 2015. Maybe it’s you…….. maybe it’s someone you know. Look around, we have many leaders in our midst. A new president will set a new agenda, bring new energy and fresh ideas to the board and the mem- bership. When a door shuts, a window opens. The End, Is Often, Just

the Beginning!

As with all things, the end

of this year is also the begin-

ning of next year. We’ll all be

ripping off that last page of the

calendar and saying, “where

did the year go?” The months

fly by and the GSCA Board can

look back at a long list of ac-

complishments, and an equally

long list of unfinished business.

As one list ends, another be-

gins.

Older dogs pass away and

are missed more than most of

us care to say, but that new

puppy has to go out and so we

take him for a walk, laugh at

his goofy puppies, cry a little

for our lost friend, and we all

carry on. One chapter closes,

another begins.

So it is, also, with our

friends, family and judges. We

have lost some of all of these in

the last year. But you know,

we’ll make new friends, sched-

ule that visit to our family for

dinner and notice some new

faces on the judges at the dog

shows. None of this means we

won’t miss the ones who have

gone. It just gives us a healthy

look-back at good times and

bad with the family and friends.

As for the judges who have

gone, they have set the bar very

high for the next generation and

we need to welcome the new-

comers with open arms into our

show rings. Take a minute to

say “Hell-o” when you see

someone new in the grooming

area, in the x-pens or in the

show ring.

I have written in this space

at other times about listening to

their peace and move on. We

will be the last year of my term

“A dog doesn't care

if your rich or poor,

smart or dumb. Give

him your heart.. and

he'll give you his.”

― Milo Gathema

Craig was allergic my choice

had to be low-shedding. I

wanted a Standard Poodle

while Craig wanted an Aire-

dale. We went to the IKC

benched dog show in down-

town Chicago where we fell

in love with Giant Schnau-

zers, specifically CH Key-

stone’s Shaq Second Chance.

After contacting the breeder,

and waiting until May of

2000, we got Keystone’s

Gypsy in the Palace “Gypsy”.

This one little puppy changed

my life. Gypsy opened up a

world of dog people, most

very good people who I will

be my friends for a long time.

We went to dog shows, obedi-

ence trials, agility trials,

tracking tests, and herding

tests all over the Midwest,

meeting people and challeng-

ing our training. Gypsy meant

more to me than I can de-

scribe and she went over the

Rainbow Bridge in 2012.

My new puppy is supposed to

be perfect since I made a lot

of rookie training mistakes

previously, but Irie has other

ideas. We are currently train-

ing in conformation, obedi-

ence, tracking, & agility. She

earned her first AKC title, a

TD, in October. Irie loves her

soft Frisbee toy and liver

brownies.

My grandchildren saw a

presentation on service dogs

and one of the tricks

they did was having

the dog pray. So we

taught Irie to rest her

front paws on my

forearm, and bend

her head between

her front legs. This

is my favorite trick

mainly because the

grandkids helped

and they were so

excited.

My name is Teresa Higgins

and I live in a northern suburb

of Chicago, where I own an

aquarium maintenance com-

pany called Sea Shell Aquari-

um Service. I also work part-

time at a nearby doggie day-

care. For the sliver of time

that I am not working or train-

ing my dog, I like to read,

play computer games, and

cook.

Currently I share my house

with Riesenrad’s Jambalaya

“Irie” an 18 month old Giant

Schnauzer, a fresh water fish

tank, a salt water fish tank,

and Craig, my significant -

other..

In 1999 I began a search for a

dog, not just any dog I wanted

a show dog. One that I could

do obedience, agility, and

conformation.-beauty and

brains. It needed to be medi-

um to large size and since

In 2006 Laura Feldt insisted that I

join GSCA to help with the track-

ing test. The club has provided a

whole new level of competition

and camaraderie. I feel the club

supports someone like me who

has only had a couple of Giants,

and who will never be a big time
