Stewardship Thought for the Week

Both widows in today’s readings gave all they had to the work of the Lord, one using all her remaining food to feed Elijah and the other offering her two copper coins to the temple treasury. Faithful stewards give all that is asked and trust the Lord to be faithful to His promises.

Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time 1 Kgs 17:10-16; Ps 146; Heb 9:24-28; Mk 12:38-44 or 12:41-44

The scene presented by today's Gospel underlines the relationship between rich and poor by illustrating the difference of behavior between the Scribes and the widow. In the modern world this contrast is being repeated by the disproportionate stages of development in different countries, a contrast which is currently referred to as the North-South relationship. The Messiah utters a negative judgment in regard to those who live in luxury and wealth and who despise the poor; in regard to the rich who do not give to the poor as much as they might, or who, even when they do give, do so with an ostentation that betrays the fact that they are seeking their own glory: "Beware of the scribes who like to accept marks of respect in public and have the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets" (Mk 12:38-39). On the other hand Jesus gives very high praise to the hidden gesture of the poor widow, who generously gives even what she needs for herself, and he contrasts this act with the offerings of so many rich people who give "sizable amounts", but with ostentation. Jesus' warning invites us today to examine ourselves: to ask ourselves, that is, if the coming of the Kingdom has really caused the situations of power and extravagance existing in the world to be overturned. This could have happened if each individual had matched his or her faith with logical action, especially with regard to efforts in favor of the very poor, the marginal people and the despised.

La escena que nos presenta el Evangelio de hoy subraya la relación entre ricos y pobres, con referencia al comportamiento diverso de los escribas y de la viuda. En el mundo actual ese contraste se repite históricamente por la diferencia entre las condiciones de desarrollo en los distintos países, clasificado corrientemente como relación entre Norte y Sur.

El Mesías hace una valoración negativa de quien vive en el lujo y en la riqueza, despreciando a los pobres; de los ricos que no dan a los pobres lo que podrían o que, aunque contribuyan, lo hacen con formas de ostentación que demuestran la búsqueda de su propia gloria: ¡Cuidado con los letrados! Les encanta pasearse con amplio ropaje y que les hagan reverencias en la plaza, buscan los asientos de honor en las sinagogas y los primeros puestos en los banquetes” (Mc 12, 38-39).

En cambio, Jesús hace una gran alabanza al gesto secreto de la pobre viuda, la cual da con generosidad incluso de lo suyo necesario; confrontándolo con las ofertas de tantos ricos que dan “muchas monedas”, pero con ostentación.

La llamada de Jesús nos invita a hacer hoy una comprobación: preguntarnos si la llegada del reino ha dado lugar efectivamente a un cambio de las situaciones de dominio y de lujo existentes en el mundo. Esto se habría podido realizar si cada uno hubiese vivido la propia fe en coherencia con las obras, especialmente con aquellas en favor de los más pobres, marginados y despreciados.

Los fieles administradores de los bienes de Dios dan todo lo que se les pide y confían en que el Señor es fiel a Sus promesas.

IMPACTOS give you the opportunity to better understand your children during the important character forming years. Our program is designed for married couples with children between the ages of 3 to 11 years of age. The children also enjoy a series of activities suited to their age.
