1964 The Tribute

1964 The Tribute Friday, January 10 | 8:00 PMLive SeriesWhen “1964” The Tribute started in the early ‘80s, the members of the group thought the gig would last for a few lunch time shows. They never could have imagined it would still be going strong in 2019. More than 30 years of researching and performing have made “1964” masters of their craft. They recreate an early ‘60s live Beatles concert with period instruments, clothing hairstyles and onstage banter with an accuracy that is unmatched. Mac Ruffing, who performs as Paul McCartney, is so meticulous in his portrayal of Paul that he learned to play the bass guitar left-handed despite being right-handed. It’s attention to detail of that magnitude that explains why they are hailed by both critics and fans alike as the most authentic and endearing Beatles tribute. “1964” has played sold out shows at famous venues like Carnegie Hall and Red Rocks many times. For those who never saw the Beatles live in concert but always wanted to experience Beatlemania, this is as close as anyone could possibly get to feeling the magic.

Dogman: The MusicalSaturday, January 18 | 2:00 PMFamily Series“Dog Man: The Musical,” is a hilarious new production based on the worldwide bestselling series from Dav Pilkey, the creator of Captain Underpants. Best buds George and Harold have been creating comics for years, but now that they’re in fifth grade, they figure it’s time to level up and write a musical based on their favorite character, Dog Man, the crime-biting sensation who is part dog, part man, and all hero! With the head of a dog and the body of a policeman, Dog Man loves to fight crime and

chew on the furniture. But while trying his best to be a good boy, can he save the city from Flippy the cyborg fish and his army of Beasty Buildings? Can he catch Petey, the world’s most evil cat, who has cloned himself to exact revenge on the doggy do-gooder? And will George and Harold finish their show before lunchtime? Find out in this epic musical adventure featuring the hilarity and heart of Dav Pilkey’s beloved characters. The show is written by Kevin Del Aguila and Brad Alexander, who collaborated on the Emmy-winning series “Peg + Cat,” on PBS, TheaterWorksUSA’s “Click, Clack, Moo,” and the upcoming “Clifford the Big Red Dog,” on PBS and Amazon. Jen Wineman directs and choreographs.

Classic Albums Live

Classic Albums Live perform David Bowie – Ziggy StardustFriday, January 24 | 8:00 PMLive SeriesCited as one of the greatest rock albums ever by Rolling Stone, VH1, Time and others, “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars,” made David Bowie both a star and a legend. Classic Albums Live takes classic albums, like Bowie’s, from the ‘60s and ‘70s and recreates those albums live on stage, note for note, cut for cut. Founded in 2003 by Toronto musician Craig Martin, Classic Albums Live has quickly earned a stellar reputation for perfectly recreating classic albums, but without the cheesy costumes or shoddy impersonators. Using the world’s best musicians, fans are treated to an exact replication of the album followed by a second set of the featured artist’s greatest hits. Musicians are chosen according to their sound and their fit into a particular niche, be it The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, The Eagles or Led Zeppelin. The album might require a sitar player, a children’s choir, a string quartet or someone to ring the alarm clock. Whatever it takes, the musicians treat these revered albums like a score—the way a symphony orchestra treats Mozart. Martin’s Classic Albums Live shows are touted as “a must for music lovers” by Maclean’s magazine.

The Messenger Legacy – Art Blakey Centennial Celebration Friday, February 7 | 8:00 PMLive SeriesDrummer Ralph Peterson Jr. has assembled an all-star group of musical talent for a tribute to the Jazz Messengers, the prolific big band collective led by his mentor, the late Art Blakey. Also the founding drummer, Blakely led the influential jazz collective from the mid-1950s until his death in 1990. This year the collective is marking the 100th anniversary of Blakey’s birth with selections from a new recording. The musicians include Peterson on percussion, saxophonists Bobby Watson and Bill Pierce, bassist Essiet Essiet, pianist Geoffrey Keezer, and trumpeter Brian Lynch. The Messenger Legacy can exist in several configurations. Musicians Phillip Harper, Robin Eubanks, Craig Handy, Donald Harrison, Johnny O’Neal, Lonnie Plaxico, Donald Brown and even the living senior Messenger Reggie Workman, are all connected to the project. Under the leadership of Blakey, the Jazz Messengers collective was a proving ground for young jazz talent, and that tradition continues today. These musicians often have a deep and direct connection with, and have been mentored by Messenger alumni listed above. Among the young musicians are Zaccai Curtis, Sean Jones and many others. This ensures the legacy lives beyond those who had direct contact with Blakey.

Hawktail

HawktailSunday, February 9 | 7:30 PMLive SeriesFor many years Brittany Haas (fiddle), Paul Kowert (bass) and Jordan Tice (guitar) were known as a trio of America’s finest string players. They spent a decade stoking the fires of their passion project and forging their own brand of roots music—one grounded in timeless tradition, crafted by top-shelf musicianship and performed by jubilant comradery. Individually, they lent their sound to bands, but Haas Kowert Tice was a special road they could travel together, where communication was intuitive, then innovative. While recording an album they reached the conclusion that their sound was incomplete. Yearning for more rhythmic energy and robustness in the ensemble sound, they cut the tunes again with special guests on mandolin and percussion, before realizing they wanted to add a fourth member to round out the group. They added a familiar face from the acoustic musician scene, Dominick Leslie, a versatile mandolinist. He offers a rhythmic backbone and another plectrum to balance the dueling bows of bass and fiddle. Leslie’s addition thickens the sound and tightens the groove, opening new creative doors for Hawktail.

Hood College presents

Tara WestoverTuesday, February 11 | 7:00 PMLive SeriesTara Westover is an American author. Born in Idaho to a father opposed to public education, she never attended school. She spent her days working in her father’s junkyard or stewing herbs for her mother, a self-taught herbalist and midwife. Taught to read by an older brother, her education was erratic and incomplete. She was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. After that first encounter with education, she pursued learning for a decade, graduating magna cum laude from Brigham Young University in 2008 and subsequently winning a Gates Cambridge Scholarship. She earned an MPhil from Trinity College, Cambridge in 2009, and in 2010 was a visiting fellow at Harvard University. She returned to Cambridge, where she was awarded a PhD in history in 2014. In 2018, she published her memoir, Educated, which explores her struggle to reconcile her

desire for education and autonomy with her desire to be loyal to her family. Educated was an instant commercial and critical success, debuting at #1 on The New York Times bestseller list and remaining on the list for more than a year.

JJ Grey & Mofro

JJ Grey & MofroFriday, February 14 | 8:00 PMLive SeriesAs a boy, JJ Grey was drawn to country-rockers, including Jerry Reed, Otis Redding and the other luminaries of Memphis soul. Meanwhile, Run-D.M.C. played on repeat in the parking lot of his high school. Merging these traditions, and working with a no-nonsense blue-collar ethic, Grey began touring as Mofro in the late ‘90s, with backbeats that crossed Steve Cropper with George Clinton and a lyrical directness that made his debut LP “Blackwater,” a calling-card among roots-rock aficionados. Soon, he was expanding his tours beyond America and the U.K., playing ever-larger clubs and eventually massive festivals, as his fan base grew from a modest group of loyal initiates into something resembling a national coalition. With his latest album “Ol’ Glory,” Grey does his idols proud. It’s a country record where the stories are all part of one great mystery; it’s a blues record with one foot in the church; it’s a Memphis soul record that takes place in the country.

Bokante

Bokante Friday, February 28 | 8:00 PM Live SeriesNamed with the word meaning “exchange” in the Antillean Creole language spoken on vocalist Malika Tirolien’s Caribbean home island of Guadeloupe, Bokanté is one of the latest omnivorous conglomerations assembled by bassist and Snarky Puppy mastermind Michael League. Combining the Snarky Puppy guitar line and lap steel virtuoso Roosevelt Collier with a trio of percussionists including longtime Paul Simon hand drummer Jamey Haddad and Banda Magda/Snarky Puppy multi-instrumentalist Keita Ogawa, Bokanté brings a hugely dynamic multicultural musical approach that marries the electric blues of Led Zeppelin with Afropop and folkloric Caribbean styles, unified by the soaring vocals of Tirolien. Sung in Creole and French, Tirolien’s lyrics paint unflinching portraits of joy, protest, racism, triumph, heartbreak, crisis, hope, and finally, unity. In the words of League, “Unity was paramount in the formation of this group. Though the ensemble is multi-lingual, multi-cultural, and multi-generational, we all feel connected as musicians and people. And in combining our different accents I feel that there is a strangely common and poignant sound, one that can reach and relate to listeners around the world.” Bokanté’s debut album, Strange Circles, was released last year.

Classic Albums Live performs Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – Damn the Torpedoes Saturday, May 2 | 8:00 PMLive SeriesThe latest addition to the critically acclaimed and highly successful Classic Albums Live series is Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers’ 1979 breakthrough album, “Damn the Torpedoes.” Classic Albums Live takes classic albums from bands like Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, from the ‘60s and ‘70s, and recreates those albums live on stage, note for note, cut for cut. Founded in 2003 by Toronto musician Craig Martin, Classic Albums Live has quickly

earned a stellar reputation for perfectly recreating classic albums, but without the cheesy costumes or shoddy impersonators. Whatever it takes, the musicians treat these revered albums like a score -the way a symphony orchestra treats Mozart. Martin’s Classic Albums Live shows are touted as “a must for music lovers” by Maclean’s magazine.

Wylder

WylderThursday, May 7 | 7:30 PMDiscovery SeriesWylder writes rhythmic, haunting and lyrically-driven indie-folk with a penchant for strange, foreboding storytelling about family and loss. First formed in Virginia by singer/guitarist Will McCarry, the group quickly grew to include Lonnie Southall (guitar/mandolin), Mike Pingley (drums), and Jackson Wright (bass/piano). Wylder’s unique blend of indie-rock and chamber-folk combines the spirit of alternative rock giants like Arcade Fire and The Shins with the intimate, harmony-laden sounds of Fleet Foxes and Radical Face. Their debut album, Rain and Laura, which was released in April of 2016, caught the attention of Train’s Pat Monahan. He premiered their last two singles, “Bitter” and “Save a Way,” on his Sirius XM program Train Tracks, kicking off a successful run on AAA stations around the country. The band’s music has also been featured on the ABC show The Good Doctor as well as many popular MTV programs. In 2018, they performed aboard The Rock Boat XVIII alongside Need to Breathe, Barenaked Ladies, and Sister Hazel.

OUR HISTORY

Two days before Christmas 1926, a sell-out crowd of more than 1,500 people gathered at Frederick’s plush new movie palace—the Tivoli Theater. Built by the Stanley Crandall Company at a cost of $350,000, the Tivoli offered an atmosphere of refined elegance.

Theater-goers marveled at the modern centerpiece of it all: the magnificent Wurlitzer organ. Installed in 1926 at a cost of $18,500, it continues to entertain today’s audiences during silent movies and sing-alongs. The Weinberg’s is the only Wurlitzer in Maryland still in its original installation.

The Weinberg was Frederick’s first air-conditioned public building, all due to the 1939 and 1940 American Horse of the Year, Challedon. Locally-bred Challedon’s owner, W.L. Brann, and Dr. Edward Thomas, a race fan and patron of the Tivoli accompanied the horse to race in the 1940 Hollywood Gold Cup. At a pre-race party, Warner Brothers head Jack Warner was overheard saying he was going to bet $50,000 on the favorite. Thomas convinced Warner to bet on Challedon instead. When Challedon won the race and a hefty sum for Warner, Warner asked how he could return the favor. Thomas’s request was to install air-conditioning at the Tivoli, and Warner made good on his offer.

The Tivoli fell into disrepair during the 1950s. In 1959, Dan and Alyce Weinberg purchased the building for $150,000 and restored it to its former glory. By the 1970s, downtown Frederick was deteriorating, and the Tivoli struggled to compete with modern movie theaters. Its struggle reached its low point when storm-driven waters flooded the theater and downtown Frederick in 1976. The water peaked three feet above stage level, submerging the seats and floating the Wurlitzer onto the stage. Community members joined forces to salvage the historic landmark—organ and all. After sixteen months, the theater reopened as the Weinberg Center for the Arts, honoring the Weinberg family, who gifted the theater to the City of Frederick.

The Weinberg has drawn such famous names as Marcel Marceau, Hal Holbrook, George Carlin, Judy Collins, Tammy Wynette, Garrison Keillor, the Temptations, Michael Moore, and Tom Jones. Today, the center is owned and operated by the City of Frederick, with the support of the Weinberg Center for the Arts Inc.—a nonprofit organization created in 1995. Thanks to a successful capital campaign begun in 2008, the theater was renovated in 2011, once more restored it to its former grandeur.
