Skid-Steer Loader Selection

Powerful and versatile, skid-steerloaders often operate under adverseconditions. These highly maneu-

verable machines work well in tightspaces. In sports field construction, where moving rocks, earth, and sod andother heavy objects is commonplace,skid-steer loaders can save the day.

Here are a few skid-steer loaderbasics, courtesy of the Melroe Company, manufacturers of the Bobcat loader line,to consider when you begin to search forthe right machine:

Rated Operating Capacity. Therated operating capacity of a skid-steerloader is the equivalent of one-half a loadthat would cause the unit to tip for-ward (statically) at maximum reach. This capacity reflects a load that amachine can handle under normal oper-ating conditions.

Performance. Skid-steer loader per-formance depends on a number of factorsbesides engine horsepower. Other vitalvariables include weight distribution,tread-width-to-wheelbase ratio, axletorque, breakout force, pushing forceand engine torque.

The most accurate measure of enginepower is net horsepower. However, it'scrucial for the machine to transfer thatpower to the wheels as efficiently aspossible. That's where the other variablesenter the equation.

For example, an engine that developshigh net torque at low rpm has better lug-ging capacity, which is needed for diggingand pushing. To provide a more accuratemethod of analyzing actual loader power, always cite horsepower at specific rpm.Axle torque is a direct measure of torqueavailable at the axles. Axle torque mustbe adequate so that the loader can putits power to work at the wheels.

A measure of applied power in diggingor excavating application is called break-out force - the prying force exhibited bythe bucket. Another variable, pushingforce, is a function ofmachine weight andtraction.

The weight distribution and tread-width-to-wheelbase ratio should allowfor easy turning or skidding under load, eliminating the need for excessivehorsepower. Such "balanced" designalso increases the life of tires and thedrive train.

Serviceability. Loaders that pro-vide easy access to regularly maintainedcomponents help keep productivity high. For example, tip-up operator cabs andswing-out tailgates greatly enhance ser-viceability of hydrostatic and enginecomponents. The easier it is to performroutine service, the most likely it is to beperformed on schedule.

Attachment Capability. Since ver-satility is the hallmark of skid-steerloaders, attachment capability is a vitalconsideration when purchasing one.Not only should the loader be able toaccept a variety of implements, butattaching and removing them shouldbe quick and easy, without the loss ofstrength and security.

These are but a few of many consid-erations to keep in mind when buying orleasing a skid-steer loader. Others to con-template are dealer selection and the man-ufacturer's service and parts network. Also, consider depreciation and resalevalue - slow depreciation and highresale value are often the marks of a high-quality piece of equipment. 0

A selec-tion of dosages are provided on thelabel for species-specific control rang-ing from grasses to woody vegetation. It is necessary to utilize an adjuvant inconjunction with Rodeo to reinsureproper coverage of foliage and enhanceplant uptake. No water-use restric-tions follow treatment.

Sonar (Dow-Elanco). A systemicaquatic herbicidecontaining fluridoneas its active ingre-dient. Although itcan be used to con-trol a wide range of

species, dosage rates can be adjustedto provide selective control of particu-larly troublesome plants. There areno restrictions on fishing and swimmingfollowing treatment. Consult the labelfor irrigation restrictions, which vary, depending on dosage and use site. 0

Navigate (Applied BiochemistsInc.). A granular 2,4-D ester formula-tion specifically labeled for aquatic use. This is a systemic herbicide that selec-tively controls certain troublesomeaquatic species such as water milfoil, coontail, water lilies and several emer-gent shoreline species. It is best usedearly in the season, before plants mature.Follow label instruc-tions for water-userestrictions.

Reward (ZenecaInc.). FormerlyDiquat under theValent label, this is a fairly broad-range contact herbicide that can beused on a variety of submerged, float-ing and emergent species. Water-userestrictions are: 24 hours no swim-ming and 14 days no irrigation, stockwatering and domestic use. There areno restrictions on fish consumption.

Rodeo (Monsanto). Rodeo is a sys-temic herbicide containing glyphosate.

WATERFILTER BRUSHWith Amiad's Brushaway, water fil-

ters can be cleaned while the filtrationsystem is operating. The Brushaway, which easily retrofits to existing filters, has a series of nylon brushes that can beinserted into the filter screen. The han-dle outside the lid rotates the brushesinside, thereby brushing away parti-cles from the filter screen. The particlesare then expelled through the manualflush valve. Amiad's filtration productsare used in farm, drip, landscape and golfcourse irrigation, recycling, and waste andmunicipal water-treatment facilities.AMIAD FILTRATION SYSTEMSCircle 132 on Postage Free Card
