GENOCIDE
Modern genocide can be shown through Elie Wiesel’s holocaust memoir Night, as it shows the horrors of genocide as the are echoed through circumstances today.
What is the holocaust? What is genocide? What are some examples of modern genocide?
GENOCIDE
“The deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political, or cultural group”(Merriam Webster Dictionary).
THE HOLOCAUST
“The Holocaust perpetrated by Adolf Hitler and the Nazis during World War II. The Nazis primarily targeted Jews due to their ethnicity, religion, and beliefs. Killing almost six million Jews in a 12-year period, the Nazi’s genocidal policy significantly altered the demographics of Europe”(Holocaust).
By the middle of 1942, however, specially built gas chambers and crematorium were in use, enabling the Germans to gas and then incinerate several thousand people per day”(Aushwitz).
MODERN GENOCIDE
“The planning for the genocide began in January 1994. The United Nations Assistance Mission to Rwanda (UNAMIR) Lieutenant-General Roméo Dallaire was informed of the plans in mid-January” (Rwandan Genocide).

“All three men were about to be hung…”(Wiesel 26).
“The weak ones were sent to the crematory”(Wiesel 34).
NIGHT
“In front of us flames. In the air that smell of burning flesh”(Wiesel 18).
NIGHT
“Work is liberty!” (Weisel 26).
CONCLUSION
Genocide is still going on today in many countries such as Rwanda, Balkans, and Darfur.
The Holocaust is the biggest example of genocide
It is important to remember the horrors of the past to prevent it from happening again.
