GTS/GTSA Preview – Aschenbach and Kurtz return to defending the GTS and GTSA titlesLast year’s GTS racing was some of the best in the Pirelli World Challenge in many years with a variety of sports cars and top drivers scoring victories. In fact, three-time GTS champion Lawson Aschenbach of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., only won two races in the 18-event trail but was a podium finisher eleven times to secure the driver, team and manufacturer title for the Blackdog Speed Shop team with the No. 10 Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R.Aschenbach, a five-time PWC series champion, returns to St. Pete as the qualifying track record holder in the renumbered No. 1 Blackdog machine, but the popular Vanderbilt University grad will have plenty of competition again this year.Leading that charge will be six-time 2017 GTS race winner Ian James of Paradise Valley, Ariz., in the No. 50 Team Panoz Racing Panoz Avezzano GT as well as the 2017 GTA and GT Sprint Pro-Am champion James Sofronas, the veteran from Villa Park, Calif., in the No. 14 GMG Racing Audi R8 LMS. Former GT Champion Alvaro Parente Makes Big Switch in 2018

Defending St. Petersburg winner seeks to put new K-PAX Bentley to victory lane

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Former Pirelli World Challenge GT champion Alvaro Parente can get used to a change very quickly. After a brilliant open-wheel career as a youngster, Parente jumped into the GT sports car world and made a name for himself throughout Europe, even winning the SRO Bathurst 12 Hours in Australia. Two years ago, the personable Portugese driver came to North America with K-PAX Racing in the Pirelli World Challenge. And, having only raced on one PWC track previously (Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca), he took his K-PAX Racing GT sports car to six race wins and a driver point championship in 2016, his ‘rookie’ North American season. Last year, Parente just missed out on the PWC GT Sprint title but still managed four wins including one in the PWC GT season opener in the streets of St. Petersburg. Now, Parente returns to the St. Pete bay street circuit and is dealing with another change in his career. After six years driving a McLaren, the 33-year-old racer looks for another harborside win and a second GT championship title in a new GT machine when the Pirelli World Challenge GT season opens this Saturday (March 10) and Sunday (March 11) at the 14-turn, 1.8-mile temporary track.Parente (in the No. 9) and his K-PAX Racing teammate Rodrigo Baptista (No. 3) of Brazil will be driving new K-PAX Racing Bentley Continental GT3 sports cars in the twin 50-minute PWC sprint races.“I really enjoy the street tracks we are going to this season,” said Parente, also a two-time street course winner in Long Beach, Calif., “We have a new challenge with the Bentley this year, and we are working hard to start the year off well. Some of the tracks on the schedule will be more difficult than others, but we already know some of the challenges ahead for St. Pete. We will give it all we have this year.”Last year, Parente was sensational in his St. Pete victory, coming from fourth to first by the second lap in the 50-minute sprint contest. Using lapped traffic to his advantage, Alvaro posted a 10.135-second win at the checkered flag.“It was so much fun to return to St. Petersburg last year for my second event there,” said Parente. “The start was a little difficult as I didn’t really see the green flag; not exactly the best start. But, on the second lap, I was able to slide under Pierre Kaffer in the No. 4 car in turn one. Then Daniel (Mancinelli, the pole winner) in the Ferrari

guarded the inside line entering turn four and I made the outside move. The track surface was a little slippery, but I got to the corner and made the pass. After that, the K-PAX felt very good to the checkered flag.”Parente has been a master on street circuits since joining the Pirelli World Challenge, as he understands the difficult street directions and the bumper-to-bumper, wheel-to-wheel racing usually associated with the temporary courses.“Last year, I knew that there was some wild stuff happening behind me (on the track) but I focused on the track and keeping my pace,” he explained. “Racing on a street circuit is always tough. You can’t make a single mistake at a place like St. Pete or you will be in the wall. So, you must drive hard but at a secure pace. Overall, I was very happy with the win in the opening race of the season. I couldn’t ask for a better start to the season than with a victory.”Now, with his new Bentley machine, Parente will have a tough chore to maneuver the tight walls in St. Petersburg with the larger vehicle. But don’t count out this European star after scoring ten wins in the past two Pirelli World Challenge campaigns.“The GT class is always a tough battle,” said Parente. “I expect another hard-fought race in each of the two St. Pete sprints. There are some tough drivers in the field too. Should be an exciting weekend.”Battling Parente in the GT division at St. Petersburg will be the likes of Mancinelli of Italy, a three-time GT winner in 2017, in the No. 31 TR3 Ferrari 488 GT3, past LeMans winner Toni Vilander in the No. 61 R. Ferri Motorsports Ferrari 488 GT3, Michael Christensen of Denmark in the Tampa-based Alegra Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R, Scott Hargrove of Canada in the Pfaff Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R and 17-year-old Parker Chase of New Braunfels, Tex., in the No. 19 TruSpeed Motorsports Audi R8 LMS.Action gets underway on Friday (March 9) with the first GT practice at 9:50 a.m. EST, while the GT race on Saturday is set for 3:50 p.m. EST and Sunday’s event is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. EDT. The two GTS features will run Saturday at 5:05 p.m. EST and 9:30 a.m. EDT. Daytime savings time occurs on March 11 at 2 a.m.

Teenager Harry Gottsacker Set to Battle for GTS title with Fast and Proven SIN CAR GT4 in Pirelli World Challenge

Talented Texan could surprise road racing veterans in 2018ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Young Harry Gottsacker may only be 18 years old, but the talented racing teenager could be in the mix for the highly-competitive GTS division championship of the Pirelli World Challenge road racing series, when the season kicks off in the streets of St. Petersburg March 9-11.Gottsacker, a karting world champion at age 14 at Daytona International Speedway, has already representing the U.S.A. karting team in Italy at the World Championships Finals, competed in Red Bull Global Rallycross and driven in the British GT sports car series. Now, that racing experience at a young age could pay off as Gottsacker also proved his worth last year in the Pirelli World Challenge by winning a race in the GTSA class and a GTS pole position over a strong field at the famed Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Harry’s strong showings in GTS last year caught the eye of Racer’s Edge Motorsports team owner Jon Mirachi, who was impressed by his speed and maturity on the track. And Gottsacker continued his karting this year where he won the Grand National Champion title.Concentrating on one series and one championship run has the teenager set for 2018 with the PWC race-winning team of Racer’s Edge Motorsports from Florida. The Racer’s Edge contingent has won seven GTS races in the past two years in the potent SIN CAR 1 GT4 car. “Settling down and focusing on one series will be important for me,” said Gottsacker, who also is an Eagle Scout. “I have been bouncing around with world karting races, Global Rallycross and then the British GT series. I came back into PWC late last year and I ran well. I just graduated from high school and will take some college classes in between my racing season. With this new program, I believe I can concentrate solely on working with a top-notch professional organization and a fast race car.”Gottsacker knows it will not be an easy trek in his search for the coveted 2018 GTS point title with the likes of talented drivers such as five-time PWC series champion Lawson Aschenbach (Blackdog Speed Shop Chevy Camaro), Ian James (Team Panoz Racing Panoz Avezzano GT), James Sofronas (GMG Racing Audi R8 LMS GT4), Jade Buford (PF Motorsports Ford Mustang GT4), Nate Stacy (KohR Motorsports Ford Mustang GT4), Drew Staveley (Lacy Racing Ginetta G55), Jeff Courtney (Kenda/JCR Maserati) and 2018 GTSA champion George Kurtz (CrowdStrike/GMG Audi R8 LMS GT4).

“The SIN CAR is a very aggressive race car and it should continue to do well against all the different makes in the GTS,” he said. “You have the Camaro, Mustang, Porsche, Panoz, Mercedes, Ginetta, Maserati, BMW, KTM, Audi and Aston Martin. That is a lot of competition and the GTS class has a lot of talented drivers like Lawson (Aschenbach), Ian James, Jade Buford and others. I expect some great wheel-to-wheel action in 2018.“I’m excited to return to the Pirelli World Challenge this year with the SIN CAR 1 GT4. The car has won races the past two years in GTS and it has proven to be fast at almost all of the tracks on the PWC circuit. This will mark the first full year I’ll get to run for the championship. So, I feel like I can continue the team’s winning trend in 2018 with more victories. I think the potential is really there to challenge for the GTS title.”With the strong competition in the GTS class for 2018, Gottsacker has been working hard in the off-season to be ready to go in the SIN CAR 1 GT4 when the green flag drops on Saturday’s 50-minute sprint feature at St. Petersburg. “I have been training hard for the 2018 season and racing against top guys in karting, even some former F-1 and IndyCar guys in Florida,” said Harry. “So, those events have raised my potential for the future. You learn such great race craft competing against those guys like Ruben Barrichello and Nelson Piquet Jr.” The 2018 Pirelli World Challenge GTS road racing schedule begins in the streets of St. Petersburg, Fla., March 9-11 followed by COTA March 23-25, VIRginia International Raceway April 27-29, Canadian Tire Motorsport Park May 18-20, Lime Rock Park May 25-28, Road America June 22-24, Portland International Raceway July 13-15, Utah Motosports Campus August 10-12 and Watkins Glen International Aug. 31-Sept. 2.

Veterans Davison, Long, O’Connell & Sellers Round Out Top 5 GT Positions

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Reigning GT champion Alvaro Parente of Porto, Portugal opened his Pirelli World Challenge championship defense Saturday with an impressive 10.135-second victory Saturday in the 2017 season-opening PWC Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by Case-It at the 1.8-mile, 14-turn temporary street circuit near the beautiful harborside. Young Alec Udell of The Woodlands,Tex., took the GTA class top honors with Preston Calvert of Potomac,. Md., winning the GT Cup division Saturday in the sun-drenched 80-degree weather.Parente, 32, took the lead from pole winner Daniel Mancinelli of Italy in turn four on the second lap of the 50-minute sprint race and never looked back in his No. 9 K-PAX Racing McLaren 650S in Round 1 of the 2017 PWC trail. Parente won six GT races and five GT pole positions in 2016 in his first season competing in North America. The personable sports car star was able to pull away from the GT field to a 2.2-second margin by lap 22 and increased his advantage in lapped traffic in the last ten laps of the event. The factory McLaren driver said he had to be conservative with his driving at times with the tough street circuit conditions.“It is so much fun to return to St. Petersburg after my first visit last year,” said Parente. “The start was a little difficult as I didn’t really see the green flag. Not the best start. But, on the second lap, I was able to slide under Pierre Kaffer in the No. 4 car in turn one. Then Daniel (Mancinelli) in the Ferrari guarded the inside line entering turn four and I made the outside move. It was a little slippery but I got to the corner and made the pass. After that, the McLaren (650S for K-PAX Racing) felt very good. I know that there was some wild stuff happening behind but I focused on the track and keeping my pace. Racing on a street circuit is always tough. You can’t make a single mistake at a place like this or you will be in the wall. So you must drive hard but at a secure pace. Overall, I’m very happy with the win in the opening race of the season. After last year, I’m so comfortable with the K-PAX team and we have confidence entering 2017. I couldn’t ask for a better start with the victory.”Australian JD Davison, now residing in Miami, Fla., made a sensational drive Saturday in the No. 007 TRG Aston Martin Vantage GT3 after starting sixth and taking the runner-up position Saturday. Davison battled Patrick Long and Pierre Kaffer throughout the 34-lap contest in some spirited action around the tricky street surfaces.“It is great to be back at St. Petersburg this year,” Davison said. “We were second last year here and it feels great to take the Aston Martin and TRG to the podium today. Another second place but it was so competitive out there. It’s hard to believe that the Pirelli World Challenge has become more competitive than last year. But I think it has happened. I raced very hard with Pierre (Kaffer) before getting him for third. Then I got up to the Ferrari (Daniel Mancinelli) quickly and was able to slide inside. But Patrick (Long) was on me so quickly. We raced extremely hard today. I’m happy to take second.”

Parente Opens PWC GT Title Defense With Victory Saturday at St. Pete; Udell, Calvert Win GTA and GT Cup Classes

Long, the 2011 PWC GT champion, also fought hard in the 2017 season opener with his No. 58 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R to secure the final position in the victory podium in the GT category.“We had quite a battle with Johnny (O’Connell) early in the race and later on with James (Davison),” said Long. “I had to look into passing in several areas today and it was extremely competitive. I came back to the Pirelli World Challenge last year after being away since 2011 and, boy, the competition level has really jumped up. Many of the newcomers to series this year like Pierre (Kaffer) found out the new level today. It’s a sprint race for 50 minutes and there is no give and take. It’s a constant push for the driver. I also wanted a good lap time for Sunday’s race lineup and I was able to do that in the middle of the race. But then (Alex) Riberas and Alvaro (Parente) turned just quicker at the end, so I missed out on the pole for Sunday.”Taking fourth Saturday in the GT category was four-time GT champion Johnny O’Connell in the red No. 3 Cadillac Racing Cadillac ATS-V.R. followed by Parente’s K-PAX Racing teammate, PWC series newcomer Bryan Sellers in the No. 6 K-PAX Racing McLaren 650S. Another new competitor to the PWC GT division took sixth with Spain’s Alex Riberas in the No. 61 R. Ferri Motorsport Ferrari 488 GT3. Riberas will start on the pole for Sunday’s 50-minute sprint Round 2 after setting the fastest race lap in Saturday’s GT event at 1:14.125 (87.41 miles per hour). Parente and Long will start Sunday’s GT race in second and third positions, respectively. In the GTA class, young Clemson University student Udell made a strong showing in his first appearance in the category in the No. 17 GMG/Euroworld Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R, leading the entire race and finishing ninth overall. The 2016 GT Cup champion, with 12 race wins, defeated veteran Michael Schein of Glen Cove, N.Y., a six-time GTA race winner in 2016, in the No. 16 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R and James Sofronas of Villa Park, Calif., in the No. 14 GMG Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R.“It was very busy up front but it’s nice running with the big guys because they’re not going to do anything too crazy,” said Udell. “I was able to have good confidence running with all the big gang. I learned a lot, for sure. I had a good battle with Peter Kox which was awesome, and I was right there with Michael Cooper, as well. It’s obviously great to come out and debut in GTA class and get a win so I’m very happy with that. I’m also happy for the Euroworld Motorsports GMG Porsche GT3R. I was really nervous going into the race since it’s a street course and that’s a heck of a way to start in a GT3 car. I was keeping my nose clean, trying to race clean, as I knew the other guys would. It turned out with the GTA win today.”Calvert took the GT Cup victory in his No. 77 Calvert Dynamics Porsche GT3 Cup over Marko Radisic of Belgrade, Serbia in the No. 11 Precision Driving Ferrari Challenge Evo.“The race was my first session after the bump that I had in the first testing run on Thursday, so the first couple of laps I was bedding brakes, getting used to the new track at turn 3, and being prepared to race,” said Calvert. “I was just trying to make sure that I did my best and also stayed out of the way of the GT guys. You have to remember who’s earning the ring out here and who’s not.”Sunday’s Round 2 of the GT/GTA/GT Cup divisions is scheduled for 3:15 pm EDT for another 50-minute sprint contest and will be broadcast live on the MotorTrendOnDemand YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/user/MotorTrend; simulcast will be handled at World-Challenge.com/StreamVideo. Porsche Takes Three GT/GTA/GT Cup Class Titles in Wheel-to-Wheel ActionST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Veteran Patrick Long of Manhattan Beach, Calif., took advantage of a wild first turn skirmish Sunday and drove his No. 58 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R to victory in the GT Round 2 of the Pirelli World Challenge Grand Prix of St. Petersburg presented by Case-It on the harborside 1.8-mile, 14-turn temporary street circuit. Young Alec Udell of The Woodlands, Texas, captured his second straight GTA title Sunday and Preston Calvert of Potomac, Md., scored a second GT Cup win.Long, 34, started third in the 24-car lineup and followed Saturday GT winner Alvaro Parente into turn one in the 50-minute sprint race when reigning GT champion Parente went wide on the slippery Albert Whited Airport front straightaway. When Parente’s No. 9 K-PAX Racing McLaren 650S slid wide at the end of the long straight, Long dove into turn one and grabbed the top position. From that point, Long never looked back in scoring his ninth career Pirelli World Challenge GT triumph and taking the early GT class point lead.Long, who raised $81,000 Wednesday evening with co-host and St. Pete IndyCar Series winner Sebastien Bourdais for All Children’s Hospital in the annual “Karts4Kids” charity event, had to hold off the challenge late in the 39-lap GT feature of four-time GT champion Johnny O’Connell of Flowery Branch, Ga., in the No. 3 Cadillac Racing Cadillac ATS-V.R., pole sitter Alex Riberas of Spain in the No. 61 R. Ferri Motorsports Ferrari 488 GT3 and Parente. Long’s victory margin was 1.475-seconds.The factory Porsche driver used that initial turn one move on the first lap to gain a five-car length advantage over O’Connell, the 20-time race winner in PWC, and actually extend his lead to 3.4 seconds by lap 30. A late race caution period caused by Saturday’s runner-up finish, Australian JD Davison of Miami, Fla., closed up the field and put pressure on Long’s margin. On the lap 37 restart, Patrick pulled out a 1.8-second lead before taking the checkered flag. Long currently leads the provisional GT points with 46.O’Connell finished second, Riberas third, Parente fourth and young Michael Cooper of Syosset, N.Y., in the No. 8 Cadillac Racing Cadillac ATS-V.R bringing up the fifth position.“I thought that I had a (Porsche) 911 that was capable of winning all weekend,” said Long. “We went back and did our homework after our P3 qualifying position yesterday and we talked about how it was going to be to go out after IndyCar. The jury was out on if the clean race track and a lot of rubber was going to bode well for us. I think we all learned what the answer was going down into turn one. It was slick and it was just a train wreck basically, cars going in all directions. Luckily I was able to learn from my mistake yesterday and keep the car on the line and from there it was just clean air and I was able to reach the potential of what I thought the car had in it all weekend. We were running pretty hard. Johnny (O’Connell) had the capability of reeling me in when he had the pressure from Riberas in the Ferrari so I was actually pushing as hard as I could. I’ve been with Porsche for close to 15 years, I’m still a factory driver. The head of Porsche North America asked me what I wanted to do. I said I wanted to win this championship. I wanted to come in rested and hungry like the rest of these guys that I’m up against. We have more competition than ever this year.”The popular O’Connell dodged the wild first turn mayhem and challenged Long throughout the GT event, while fighting with Riberas and Parente in a spirited battle that saw bumper-to-bumper action.

“At the start, you always expect guys to get in this Turn One hot and run a little long,” O’Connell said. “Alvaro (Parente) and the Ferrari (Riberas) went way long and that opened up the opportunity for me to fall right into second. In the early couple of laps, I thought I may have had something for Patrick, but, by half distance, my rear tires were just not there. The last 90-degree corner here just does not suit our car. We are great under braking and overall handling, but, that last corner, I just couldn’t match his speed through there this weekend. I couldn’t be more proud of this team to come away with a second and a fourth place finish. A good start to the year for us.”Riberas, the young sports car star with European racing experience, was impressive in his first Pirelli World Challenge competition including a pole position and third and fourth place finishes in the return of the famed No. 61 R. Ferri Motorsports Ferrari 488 GT3. Alex moved his machine up alongside O’Connell once in turn two in an attempt for the second spot but couldn’t get by the cagey veteran.“I went on throttle when the green flag went and I already had three cars by my side,” said Riberas. “After that, the car was great. R. Ferri Motorsports guys did a fantastic job, Ferrari Competizione guys did a fantastic job. The car is magnificent. I believe we are strong enough to win this championship. The St. Pete course is hard, especially when you get really close to the walls. It’s hard to get the confidence to be on the limit and qualifying was a real challenge to be on top without damaging the car. This is definitely one of the nicest tracks I’ve driven so far but I think I like all of the U.S. tracks so I’m looking forward to the season.”Parente came charging back from the first turn slide and pressured Riberas and O’Connell but had to settle for fourth with Cooper fifth. The leading GTA driver, Clemson University mechanical engineering student Udell, in the No. 17 GMG/Euroworld Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R finished sixth overall. It marked Udell’s second GTA class win of the weekend.Following Udell on the GTA podium Sunday were Michael Schein of Glen Cove, N.Y., in the No. 16 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R and Mike Hedlund of Redwood City, Calif., in the No. 98 K-PAX Racing McLaren 650S. Calvert took his No. 77 Calvert Dynamics Porsche 911 GT3 Cup to a second consecutive win in the GT Cup category.“I was able to come out clean in fourth down the straight,” said Udell. “In a situation like that, survival just takes over and you just look for the open space. This year jumping up into the sprint series which is the bread and butter of World Challenge for us to this date there’s obviously a lot of very strong guys – Patrick (Long), of course – and getting out there and being able to run with them is quite a good thing for me.”“It’s great to be back out there,” said Calvert. “It’s fun to drive with drivers that are so able. When you’re the slow car in the race because of class difference it’s fun to race with these folks and just make sure you don’t interfere with their race. It’s a short track, there’s a lot of cars, and it’s very important to keep watching your mirrors.”The Pirelli World Challenge GT and GTA classes move to another street circuit next month at the legendary Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 7-9 in Southern California for Round 3 in the 2017 tour, North America’s top GT Production-based road racing series. GT Cup competitors next hit the track in the championship-opening SprintX action at VIRginia International Raceway on April 28-30.Of note, the following awards were issued:The Optima Batteries Best Start award was issued to Tim Pappas in the No. 54 Black Swan Racing Mercedes AMG GT3 for his move to capture eight positions at the start of the race. The Cadillac Best Move of the Race was given to race-winner Patrick Long for his jump at the start of the race to take the race-long lead from P3.VP Racing Fuels Hard Charger Award was given to Daniel Mancinelli of Italy for taking the No. 31 TR3 Racing Italian Shoemaker Ferrari 488 GT3 to a sixth place finish from a P15 start, a gain of nine positions in the race overall.

Aschenbach, Buford Round Out The Podium with GT4 Machines

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Andrew Aquilante of Chester Springs, Penn., returned in fine form to the Pirelli World Challenge Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Presented by Case-It by taking home the top spot in the first round of GTS competition in the tried-and-true No. 32 Phoenix Performance Ford Mustang Boss 302, beating out a range of newer and new-to-the-series vehicles on the 1.8-mile, 14-turn temporary street circuit.Aquilante parlayed his third-place grid position into a win in the 50-minute sprint event, while also securing the fastest lap of the race at one minute, 21.445-seconds and a trap speed of 75.63 m.p.h. This fast lap also puts Aquilante in the pole position for the start of the second GTS race on Saturday.Round 1 top qualifier Lawson Aschenbach of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., driving the No. 10 Blackdog Racing Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R, lost the position on lap nine in the race at the recently-modified turn 3 and could not recapture the top spot from Aquilante, while he made a couple of late race charges before settling for second place at the checkered flag. Aschenbach set a new track record in qualifying with the debut of the Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R on Thursday.Brentwood, Tenn., resident Jade Buford, substitute-driving for the weekend, took the third spot on the podium in the No. 45 Racer’s Edge Motorsports SIN R1 GT4 with his best lap time of 1:21.488 (75.54 m.p.h.), also good enough for the grid front row in Saturday’s second GTS race. Newcomer Rodrigo Baptista of Barcelona, Spain drove the No. 3 Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche Cayman Clubsport GT4 to fourth in his first Pirelli World Challenge race.“It all comes back to turn three for me at this track,” said Aquilante. “With the change, it was fun to see the unknown right there. PWC did a great job with the pace laps and then a couple of faster so the driver could experiment with the new setup at turn three. Initially, I went into the corner at sixty per cent and a couple of corners I went over the edge so I knew where I could go with the car. That’s the reason we came to this event because we knew the Mustang was strong here. Jack (Roush Jr.) won both GTS races last year here. It’s an awesome event here at St. Pete and track

is so much fun to drive. There is very little room for error in some places but there are other locations that you can slide the car around. As soon as I could feel that I could get over the curbs, I knew the others would struggle there. I said ‘That’s where I will get the guys.’ I was able to set up Lawson for the lead and I was waiting for him to make a charge at the end. But my Pirelli tires really held up well throughout the race. To me it felt like we were getting faster and faster in some corners as the race went on. Now we will see what happens in Saturday’s race. It should be another shootout.”In GTSA (Amateur), Huntsville, Ontario, Canada’s Martin Barkey, piloting the No. 80 Mantella Autosports KTM Xbow GT4, took top honors with a 1:22.720-second lap at 74.44 m.p.h.Fastest lap from a driver in the GTSA classification came from Parker Chase in the No. 19 Performance Motorsports Group Ginetta G55 with a 1:22.273-second run at 78.76 m.p.h. Chase only completed 4 laps of the circuit before being forced to retire.Aschenbach was seeking a spectacular debut with the new Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R, a new sports car recently developed by Chevrolet, Pratt & Miller and the Blackdog Speed Shop. But the Blackdog team didn’t receive their two new machines until last week and actually had a shakedown run in Savannah this week.“There was a lot of work and dedication, a lot of focus and many people behind this new Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R machine,” said Aschenbach, the four-time PWC series champion. “When you have people like Chevrolet, Pratt & Miller and Blackdog Speed Shop behind the project, you know you are going to have a great car. I was very surprised that we rolled off the trailer and ran strong. I knew we were in the ballpark after the first couple of laps in Thursday practice. You go to a track with a new car and you don’t really know what to expect. And, for us, it like plug and play. It has been a little nerve-racking. We put a lot of miles on the test car but the new cars (No. 10 and 11) have been at the shop less than a week. We shook them down at Savannah on the way to St. Pete. I think it is amazing that we just got the cars, shook them down, won the pole (with a new track record) and finished second and is a testament to everyone behind this car. Hopefully, Saturday we can do one position better.”Meanwhile, Buford had even a shorter time to prepare for his first St. Petersburg event, as the veteran racer received the phone call to join the Racer’s Edge squad with local driver Jason Bell in the middle of race week. Buford won three GTS races in 2016 with the No. 45 Sin R1 GT4 sports car.“It was a wild week for me as the Racer’s Edge team called me to drive the No. 45 car on Tuesday this week. Then I got a call to compete in the American Ninja Warrior TV show in April at Daytona. I am a rock climber as well as a car racer. I’m very excited. I didn’t expect to be here or for any of that to happen. I have never been to the St. Pete race before but I was told the track was really fun. And they are right. It is awesome to drive. I had some great racing with Andrew and Lawson today, nose-to-tail racing, and I was close to the walls several times today. I can’t wait to get in the car tomorrow for the second GTS race of the weekend. We are starting on the front row on Saturday, but the top three times are incredibly close. It could be anyone’s race.”The GTS Round 2 50-minute sprint event is set for Saturday at 12:55 p.m. ET. 2nd Straight Year that a Mustang dominates GTS Class at St. Pete

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Andrew Aquilante’s double wins at the Pirelli World Challenge Grand Prix of St. Petersburg Presented by Case-It enjoyed a local flair after another dominating performance in the GTS division’s 50-minute sprint race with the No. 32 Phoenix Performance Ford Mustang Boss 302 at the 1.8-mile, 14-turn temporary street circuit near the St. Pete harborside. All Pirelli World Challenge results are provisional until the stewards review and technical inspection are completed.Aquilante of Chester Springs, Penn., recruited a team of three local St. Pete area residents to assist him-self and his father, Joe, in the paddock this weekend for the two GTS events and the combination proved to be a winner after Andrew took the lead on lap three of the 34-lap feature and posted a 1.598-second win over Lawson Aschenbach of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., in the No. 10 Blackdog Speed Shop Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R and 16-year-old Parker Chase of New Braunsfels, Tex., in the No. 19 Performance Motor-sports Group Ginetta G55.Aquilante, who finished second to Michael Cooper in the 2015 GTS point championship, showed that the reliable Ford Mustang Boss 302 was the “horse for course” machine after a second consecutive double GTS win for the “Blue Oval” at St. Petersburg. Last year, Jack Roush Jr., captured both GTS main events in the Ford Mustang Boss 302.On Saturday, Aquilante started from the pole but lost the top spot in turn one to Aschenbach, who was de-buting the new Chevy Camaro GT4.R in PWC action. On lap three, Andrew slid his older model Ford past the two-time GTS champion for the lead and Aquilante managed to hold off the pressure from Aschen-bach to take another checkered flag in the 80-plus degree weather.“The track was pretty good today, a little bit faster than yesterday since it was a little bit cooler out,” said Aquilante. “Lawson (Aschenbach) started pouring it on when we only had five laps to go and I thought ‘oh boy’ and actually a lap or two before that I started missing shifts and rowing through the gear box so I had to slow that down a little bit. That let (Aschenbach) creep up and get a little closer, and I was waiting for

him. The (local) crew guys have all been crew guys on our team before. It all came together and they all wanted to do it. I have to thank Rob Edwards, who used to be a St. Pete firefighter and worked this race years ago and has been part of our team for over five years, and Jason Vanjune, who lives down here and has been a part of our team for the past few years, and Drew Dale, who’s been part of the team for the past three years. It was a really fun weekend.”Aschenbach’s new Camaro actually ran with the rear bumper dragging the ground for much of the race after Martin Barkey’s Mantella Autosport KTM XBow made contact with the Camaro in turn one on the lap two restart. Barkey, of Huntsville, Ont., Canada, was forced to the pits for repairs but returned to the competition and finished eleventh Saturday.“My bumper hanging off the car is a testament to Pratt & Miller right there,” said Aschenbach. “On the re-start, I had a feeling that someone was going to come up and I got bunched in the rear. More importantly, I’m happy with the weekend with a brand new car that turned its first laps on Tuesday. Then we come here and finish both races, get the pole and the track record. Two second (place finishes) is pretty nice. Every car in the class is a GT4 class and (Aquilante) still has his old GTS car and it’s a testament to the series that they’re able to balance it and make it a fun race for all of us. I’m really excited for the Camaro GT4.R and can’t thank Blackdog Speed Shop, Pratt & Miller and Chevrolet enough for making this happen.”Meanwhile, Chase, who received his Texas state driver’s license just three weeks ago, stayed right with Aschenbach’s dragging rear bumper throughout the event but couldn’t make the pass for second. It was another sensational drive for the high school sophomore who will race in the British GT Series in addition to selected Pirelli World Challenge events in 2017.“We had a third place car and a third place finish so I’m incredibly relieved,” said Chase. “The Ginetta car is built in the UK with a Ford V6, naturally aspirated so no turbos or anything. It’s a great car, really reliable and really consistent. Harry Gottsacker and I are going over to Europe to race British GT in GT3 so it’s an honor to be working with Ginetta again in British GT and I can’t wait. I’m a sophomore (in high school) now and most of (my teachers) know what I’m doing, So, I just ask them for my work ahead of time and just sit in the trailer and do some work. I just got my (road-going) driver’s license three weeks ago. Finally, I wanted to thank my new sponsor Protein Water. Everybody go try that stuff – it’s awesome.”Fourth place went to former GTA series champion Frankie Montecalvo of Highlands, N.J., who piloted the No. 13 ANSA Motorsports KTM XBow from his ninth starting position, followed by 17-year-old Harry Gottsacker of San Antonio, Tex., in the No. 69 Performance Motorsports Group Ginetta G55s, who had a tremendous wheel-to-wheel battle with PWC series newcomer Rodrigo Baptista of Barcelona, Spain, in the No. 3 Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche Cayman Clubsport GT.Rounding out the top ten in Saturday’s GTS feature was Aschenbach’s teammate Tony Gaples of Liber-tyville, Ill., in the No. 11 Blackdog Speed Shop Chevrolet Camaro GT4.R; George Kurtz of Paradise Valley, Ariz., in the No. 04 GMG Motorsports McLaren 570S GT4; 17-year-old Nate Stacy of Owasso, Okla., in the No. 14 Flying Lizard Motorsport Porsche Cayman Clubsport GT4 and Cameron Cassels of Coldstream, B.C., Canada, in the No. 18 Case-It Racing Porsche Cayman Clubsport GT4.GTS Classes take to the track next at VIRginia International Raceway in April 28-30 for Rounds 3 and 4 of sprint action and Rounds 1 and 2 of SprintX GTS action. Races will be live-streamed at MotorTrendOn-Demand.com and World-Challenge.com/StreamVideo. Check your local listings for CBS Sports Network television broadcasts with the St. Petersburg GTS programs premiering on Wednesday, March 22nd at 10:30PM EDT.Of note, the VP Racing Fuels Hard Charger award was given to Cassels, in the No. 018 Case-it Racing Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport MR for his overall gain of 8 positions, finishing the race in tenth from his eighteenth-place grid position.
