The impressive record rolled up by this past season's Blackbirds wasnot handed out on a silver platter, as you would well know had you seen"gri-idiron greats" sweating it out when practice began in September. Quitea few boys whose names had heretofore not "been up in lights" showedtheir worth 'in practice, such as: Jack ^^llsbrook. Bob Page, Pete Booth,Charles Thorne, Du'Re Cockrell, CHfton Moore, and many others.
Jimmy Landis and Tommy Matthews were co-captains of this year'ssquad and the season's first string dependables were: Jimmy Landis andClyde Henderson, ends ; Brooks Page and tommy Matthews, tackles ; FredAugst and Dan Wheeless, guards; David Dawson, center: Pat Pattersonand Jack Allsbrook, halfbacks: George Grant, quarterback: Leo McDuffie, fullback.
From the scores for the season, it is easy to see that Rocky Mount Highreally had a powerhouse of a team. The Birds rolled up a total of 235 pointswhile their opponents scored only 51 points. We lost only to Wilson andRaleigh, and closed the season second place in the Eastern Conference.
The Blackbirds put Rocky Mount on the map by their outstanding play-ing and received many honors from the football critics. Pat Patterson wasnamed for the All-Southern team : Jimmy Landis played on the All-Stateteam while Tommy Matthews, Fred Augst, and Pat Patterson were givenHonorable Mention for the same : all four of the boys, Fred, Pat, Tommy, and Jimmy, made the All-East Conference team : Jimmy and Tommy playedin the Shriner's game, and Coach Caruso was head coach for that game.
The Blackbirds played their final game for the year on Thanksgivingagainst Hampton Roads which had been the runner-up for the championshiptitle in Virginia. Although the Virginians had a fine team, the home townboys whipped them by a score of 14 to 7.

Here it is, Ladies and Gentlemen, the nightyou've been waiting for. Wilson and Rocky Mountare going to fight it out tonight in the Rocky MountMunicipal Stadium. Who will wear the conferencecrown? Joe Caruso's Blackbirds or Leon Brogden'sCyclones? There is no way to predict the outcome of
the contest since the two teams are so evenly match-ed, but you can bet your boots that whoever walksaway with the title tonight will need quite a bit of
assistance to stay on his feet . . Mj , look at that
crowd. I'll bet there's better than 6000 fans up there
in the stands . . The Wilson boys arrived this after-
noon and are in tip-top condition. Coach Carusosays his boys are raring to go with the exception of
Erdie Lamm who's still held back by that knee of
his. . .
Well there go the boys out on the field folks,
looks like things might start popping any minutenow. Wilson chose to receive and the rivals are ready
to .start the ball rolling.
There goes the final gun, sports fans, and the
score reads-Wilson 13, Rocky Mount 12 . . That wasreally a heart breaker to lose, but that's how it goes.
Tonight was Leo McDuff'ie's night in the Bird's back-
field and he sure did do some fancy stepping . . Thatwas a beauty of a run when he received the second
half kickoff and ran for-I'd say close to seventy-five
yards and a touchdown . . too bad about that oflf-side
penalty on the try for extra point. Better luck nexttime, David. Allsbrook turned in a mighty fine job
tonight too . . He was the boy that made the first

score of ths game in the second quarter when Wilsonfumbled and Rocky Mount recovered down in pay-dirt
. . Wheeless,, Matthews, and Pag-e were the bigguns in the Blackbirds line tonight. Many's the timewhen it looked lika Gillette or Barnes were gone forgood when these big boys nabbed 'em from somewhere.
Too bad about Herman Vick, breaking his leg . .
That must nave really made Wilson see red becausetheir Cyclone... sure stepped up the pace of the game.Smart football and plenty of power gave the Cyclonesthat score by Gillette in the third quarter, but it wassheer luck that gave them the ball right there in theclosing minutes of the game on Rocky Mount's 2 or3 jard line. It seems that there was a mix-up on thesignals, and Jimmy Landis started off around endon a faks punt play. Tho Wilson boys caught himbut hard I ! and he fumbled.
The Rocky Mount boys put up a strong fightdown there and threw the cyclones for a loss of fouryards; but the breaks v/ere' just against them, andTooney Brooks went over on the fourth down, tyingup the score. Big Bennette Flowers came through forWilson by splitting the uprights for that one pointthat meant the title. Brodgen's boys really put outfor him tonight
. . Flower-: did a fine job there on thehne, while "R.nbbitt" Gillette and Troy Barnes keptthe backfield on their toes.
It wa.; a grand game and it was too bad bothteams couldn't win; but maybe' Rocky Mount willhave the Breaks next year.
