• The Office- New location! MH 100A- Report to Academic Affairs/Provost- Instituted in March 2012

• Staff- Mathew Chetnik, Director- Sasha Veiga, Brittany Rocheleau, Christina Hannon- Graduate Retention Fellows- Josie Margiotta, Steven Jeune, Jenn Migliozzi- Graduate Assistants

• Faculty Fellows- Peter Sempieri, English Department (1st year)- Anne Noonan, Psychology Department (2nd year)

INTRODUCTIONS

WHAT ARE FIRST YEAR MENTORS?

• First Year Mentor, Mission Statement• First Year Mentors are a group of Salem State University upperclassmen who care about first year students and

share their knowledge of campus resources. As mentors, they provide first year students with guidance based on their experiences in a non-judgmental and positive manner.

• First Year Experience, Philosophy• Salem State University is committed to ensuring a first-year student experience that facilitates the transition from

high school to college and that actively encourages students' involvement in the entire range of opportunities available in the college community. The first year experience will lay the foundation for student success in academic, intellectual, social, and civic endeavors in not only the student's first year but in each year until

graduation.

• ACADEMIC INITIATIVES- Learning Communities- First Year Reading Experience (FYRE) & Convocation- Meet Your Major- First Year Seminar

• PROGRAMMING INITIATIVES- Student Success Series- Alpha Lambda Delta (ALD)- Outstanding First Year Advocate Award- First Year Advisory Board (FAB)- Student Success Stations- First Year Career Fair & Major Fair Tours

HOUSEKEEPING ITEMS• Schedule/ Changes/ Missing Hours

• Time sheets

• Alternative scheduling options

• Office etiquette

• Dress code

• Noise levels

FYM RESPONSIBILITIES

• BLOGGING- Once a week, minimum 200 words each time- Share your story and experiences (past and present)- Tips for Success/The Salem State Experience

- Ensure confidentiality, end on a positive note- Topics for “tips for success” will be provided- Salem State Experience – things you’ve done or are going to do

- Guidelines: public image, appropriate language/topics, common sense

FYM RESPONSIBILITIES

• OUTREACH- Exit Surveys for students who have left- Welcome calls to incoming students- MAP-Works “green” calls

• PROGRAM PREPARATION AND IMPLEMENTATION- Student Success Stations

- Staff in high traffic locations- Programmatic and Informational- Passive Program Engagement

- Student Success Series- Mathew- Ensure supplies are set, present, clean up

- Various other programs and events throughout the year- Ability to shift schedule based on events that come up
