Being the Change... “In Purpose 6 a lightbulb came on for me. It was a shift in thinking
about one-on-one work to thinking more about systemic issues. I realized
that a lot of people like me and MCNY students grew up in underserved
communities, and I started to think about how I could help people tap into
resources in their communities. Too many times there are resources out
there that we don’t take advantage of. So I created a Community
Resource Guide that gives access to valuable resources. Using this
information can empower us to improve the condition of our lives.
This Guide is filled with free and low-cost community resources in the NYC
area. I encourage you to take advantage of the information. Information is
power!
Whitney Cooper is a new mentor and recently completed her BPS in Human Services in fall 2014.
The Community Resource Guide was her CA project!

Q: What have you learned from working with first year
students?
A: I’ve learned that the academic challenge is less than half of
the over-all challenge that “life skills” issues present for first year students. These issues include time management and prioritiz-ing commitments, effective communications skills and record keeping, basic nutrition and navigating the health care environ-ment as opposed to waiting for crises that end in the ER.
“Life skills” limitations lead to unending disruptions that stymie educational opportunities.
Q: What do you wish for students in their first year at MCNY?
A: In their first year here, I would wish that they would gain the skill and find the joy in analytical thought
(as opposed to regurgitating correct answers) and develop the ability to share those unique summations via the written word.
Q: What is your best advice to the first year student?
A: Don’t short-cut this opportunity! The harder you work, the further you will go. Attack your weaknesses,
don’t run from them. Ask for help as many times as you need to!
Professor Frank is the Director of the Undergraduate Program in Emergency Management & Business Continui-ty and Adjunct Professor.

Values shape our learning
Library Spotlight
Our school was born of the social justice movements of the 1960’s
and continues to be informed by powerful values.
These values gave shape to the structure of our curriculum:
Q: What are the values you bring to bear on your leaning?
Check out our monthly exhibits!
Critical Perspectives in Social Justice: “Black Lives Matter: Prisons, Police, Cities and Justice” This month’s exhibit attempts to explore some of the issues raised in light of Ferguson and the
Eric Garner case, including the Prison Industrial Complex, policing and racism.
African American Intellectuals Cornel West, Mary
McLeod Bethune, John
Hope Franklin, Angela
Davis: the canon of African-
American intellectuals is
long, varied, and too com-
plex to slot into one particular box. However, come explore your own cho-
sen portion of this rich history in this month’s main display.
Meet Jonathan Frater, Technical Services Librarian!
Jonathan has been a librarian since 2007, when he graduated from the Li-
brary Science program at Queens College. He’s worked in schools and librar-
ies on and off since 1993 when he taught ESL classes to students in Nagano,
Japan. In 2001 he began his librarian career developing digital resources for
the New York Academy of Medicine, including an exhibition on 19th century
grave robbers William Burke and William Hare.
