The Palmer Family Birth Center

Dedicated Dec. 1, 2015

The family birth center at Johnson City Medical Center was renovated and on Dec. 1, 2015, was rededicated as the Palmer Family Birth Center in honor of longtime nurse Shirley Palmer and her husband, Tom.

In 1957, Shirley became the first graduate from East Tennessee State University’s four-year School of Nursing. She also was the only graduate in that year’s class. As a labor and delivery nurse at Johnson City Medical Center from 1965 to 1995, Shirley dedicated her career to caring for mothers and babies. The loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother was proud that all of her grandchildren were born in this family birth center.

The Palmers worked diligently to support better healthcare and in 1997 established the Shirley M. Palmer Nursing Scholarship Endowment with Mountain States Foundation. For many years, the couple extended their generosity to other Foundation projects as well as to other worthy causes in the region. We are humbled by the Palmers’ generous support of our mission to serve families through the Palmer Family Birth Center.

2016 Spirit Award Winner | Clarinda Jeanes

Clarinda Jeanes is the recipient of the 2016 Spirit Award. The honor is given each year to a person who has passion for his or her community, is recognized as a leader in the region, is highly respected among peers and has demonstrated support for Mountain States Health Alliance’s mission while giving unselfishly of his or her time and talents.

“Clarinda has been an invaluable part of Mountain States Foundation for over 15 years,” said Patricia Holtsclaw, president, Mountain States Foundation. “From serving on the board, to chairing major fundraising campaigns, to working behind the scenes to help patients on an individual basis, Clarinda embodies everything the Spirit Award is about. Clarinda leads with kindness, a spirit of humility, and a heart for service. She is selfless in her giving, and her grace and determination inspire others to give to the community, too.”

Jeanes has served on the Mountain States Foundation Board of Trustees for more than 15 years in various capacities, including a very successful term as board chair. She was a key figure in the $25 million capital campaign to build Niswonger Children’s

Hospital, and chaired the $5 million fundraising campaign for Mountain States’ Radiation Oncology Services.

“Clarinda gives no thought of receiving anything in return and always does it with a spirit of making our community the best possible place for a child to live,” said Alan Levine, Mountain States President and CEO. “She has been an integral part of so many efforts on behalf of Niswonger Children’s Hospital and the families we serve, and we are forever grateful for her energy, her passion, and her selfless dedication to others.”

In addition to her volunteer work with Mountain States Foundation, she is a supporter of her church and of Milligan College. Her late husband, Donald Jeanes, was a minister and president of Milligan. He was also a longtime member of the Mountain States Health Alliance Board of Directors, having served as chair of the board.

After Don passed away unexpectedly in 2012, Clarinda has continued to serve the community with love, compassion and dedication. She and Don are the only husband/wife team to win the Spirit Award. Don received the honor in 2011.

Jeanes is the recipient of the Fide et Amore, Milligan College’s highest award, in recognition of her loving and faithful service to the college, as well as the Milligan’s Leaders in Christian Service Award. She has served on the Coalition for Kids board, along with countless outreach and service ministries she participates in at First Christian Church.

She was also named as the recipient of the YWCA Tribute to Women in the Volunteer Community Services category, honoring women from the region who have made a significant contribution through their dedication and giving.

2015 Tom Chase Award Winner | Heidi Dulebohn

Heidi Dulebohn, known for her extensive volunteer service for numerous local causes, is the recipient of the 2015 Tom Chase Award, given annually by the Mountain States Foundation for behind-the-scenes community work that has significantly impacted the lives of others.

The Tom Chase Award recognizes someone who exhibits four qualities: integrity, informal leadership, working behind the scenes to get things done, and willingness to go the extra mile. It measures how a person has contributed to their community, based not just on accomplishments but also on how he or she has touched lives.

“This describes Heidi perfectly,” said Pat Holtsclaw, president of Mountain States Foundation. “She is so deserving of this award. She got involved with our foundation the week she moved here to East Tennessee, and since then she has had an amazing impact on our community. I think she has volunteered for every major fundraising event we’ve done. And Heidi is so selfless. She does not draw attention to herself. She truly has a giving heart.”

Dulebohn is the wife of Dr. Scott Dulebohn of Mountain States Medical Group Neurosurgery. Since moving to Johnson City nearly a decade ago, she has served the community in many ways, with a deep commitment to volunteering. Dulebohn has served on numerous local boards and committees, including a city commission appointment to the Johnson City Public Building Authority. She is a past state president of the Tennessee Medical Association Alliance, has served as chair of the Mountain States Foundation’s Washington County Board, and is serving on the Mountain States Foundation board of trustees.

Dulebohn has chaired or volunteered for many Mountain States Foundation events, including the Niswonger Children’s Hospital Golf Classic, the Spirit Gala and the Dragon Boat Festival, in addition to helping with several other community nonprofit events.

Dulebohn accepted the Tom Chase Award “on behalf of all the volunteers who give so freely of their time to Mountain States and to our community and region,” she said.

“There are many people who go above and beyond the realm of their respective positions. They all deserve credit for what they do. I also have high hopes for the future as, together, the sky is the limit for what we can accomplish.”

Dulebohn comes from an agricultural and business background in the Midwest. She was born and raised in Illinois and formally trained as a Merchant of Grain by Continental Grain, New York. She was the first female general manager of a major grain exporting facility in the U.S. while at the Italian firm Gruppo Ferruzzi and was the first female trader for ConAgra.

She also worked in the family grain business before marrying and “retiring” to community leadership in Minnesota. She served for Gov. Tim Pawlenty at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center as chair of the finance committee.

Dulebohn is a graduate of Stephens College in Columbia, Mo., and recently completed an MA degree from the International School of Protocol and Diplomacy in Brussels, Belgium, with a concentration in cultural competence. She is certified as an international etiquette and protocol consultant and instructor from the London International Etiquette and Protocol Academy.

The late Tom Chase impacted lives throughout the region, from his work as a professional storyteller spreading hope and encouragement to serving as a chairperson of Mountain States Foundation. He was personally involved as one of the originators of several programs that the foundation supports, including Stories for the Soul and Parish Nursing.

Previous winners of the Tom Chase Award include Deborah Joyner, Larry England, Lynn Frierson, Joe Fuller, Tom Fowlkes, Buford Sturgill, Liz Hughes, June Pollock, Sam Greer, Mark Serago and Lula Gray.

“With new pediatric hospitalists at Johnston Memorial Hospital, we hope to keep children closer to home for their care. The foundation board saw an opportunity to make our hospital more comfortable for children and raised over $50,000 to see to it that our pediatric patients and their families feel more at home in our hospital” –Bryan Ely, Chair

“The latest endeavors by the foundation board will allow for the completion of the hospital’s cardiac rehabilitation equipment project. Navigating the mountains in inclement weather can often be dangerous and access to this equipment at our local hospital is critical for those who call Johnson County home.” –Paula Walter, Chair

“We completed our first major gala event - ‘Friday Night Fever’ - and it pro-duced amazing results and support from the community. Proceeds will enable Sycamore Shoals Hospital to completely refurbish the medical floor, add patient and visitor seating and provide a sooth-ing, patient-centered environment.” – Dustin Jackson, Chair

“Our attention again focused on community health for FY16. A large portion of funds raised supported the first Smyth County RAM clinic. Our communities gained extensively from the medical and dental attention given by the clinic. We also gave support to diabetes camps held at the Lutheran Camp at Hungry Mother Park.” –Todd Hannula, MD, Chair

“During this past year, many of our board members became parents. So, we decided to make Russell County Medical Center more comfortable and user-friendly for those visiting with a child. Now, our emergency department is a place of care and comfort for our smallest patients.” –Sophie Vance, Chair

It’s hard to believe Mountain States Foundation has been a part of your community since 1980! Through your generosity and the generosity of your friends, small business owners and corporate partners who make up this wonderful region we call home, our hospitals and caregivers are able to provide valuable services and programs.Over the years you have helped fund countless programs, build Niswonger Children’s Hospital, renovate the Cancer Center, purchase and renovate the Health Coach and implement the Growing Healthy program in 46 schools in partnership with the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Foundation, just to name a few accomplishments. The success of our community boards has been amazing; in every community where Mountain States has a hospital, you’ll find a foundation board working tirelessly to make a difference in the health care of that region. Friendships have been forged as the boards have celebrated each other’s successes. Through it all, the underlying motivator seems to be a deep, abiding sense of caring for others in need. When an accident or illness hits, we are so very vulnerable, and it is during these times that we often look to others. Without fail, we show our heart by reaching out to our patients and their families.I am grateful to you for several reasons. I have come to know so many of you, to count you as a friend and to gain such admiration for who you are – a genuine and caring person. Every time you make a gift, that’s a resource you could have spent on yourself, but you chose others over yourself. So today let’s celebrate YOU. It is difficult to properly express our gratitude to you for welcoming us into your hearts over the years, but we truly appreciate you!As we look to the year ahead, one that is surely filled with change, one thing that will not change is our commitment to partner with you to “change lives through giving.”
