Over Wyre, one of the North West’s best kept secrets is home to The Seven Stars - and Rick & Catherine Gilbert’s family.

Morris DancingI saw some Morris dancers in Poulton a few days ago. As I had not seen any of these cloggers for a few years, it set me thinking about where this tradition came from. It turns out that the origins of Morris dancing are lost in the mists of time and that rather than being a strictly northern phenomenon, they might have their roots in mediaeval Spain: Morris being a corruption of the Spanish word for Moorish – moresca. It seems that Morris dancers have been plying their trade in the UK for quite some time – since the 15th century according to some sources. And although I got the impression that they were a strictly northern phenomenon, the truth is that there are many different forms of Morris dancing; one of the most distinctive having its home among the honey coloured villages of the Cotswolds.

The tradition is established across wide swathes of the UK, but common features are; accordion music, the garish outfit complete with handkerchiefs, ribbons, waistcoats and knee britches. Sticks adorned with bells and staffs laid on the ground have replaced the swords that were used in the days before health and safety became such an obsession. Along the Welsh border some Morris teams still wear blackface.

I have not been to Poulton gala for a few years, as the attractions of winning a goldfish in a polythene bag are not as strong as they were. But I seem to recall Morris dancers being a part of the celebrations, alongside a week of unrelenting rain.

Children’s well-being in the UK came last among developed countries in a recent Unicef report.

It said that in this country busy parents try to compensate for long working hours by buying their children the latest gadgets and designer clothes. In so doing they are cultivating an obsession with consumer goods and it claimed that this was one of the triggers for the recent riots and looting up and down the country.

Sensible parents realize that quality experiences are far more important than any designer item. The Stalmine community, is steeped in rural farming tradition and so we are lucky that many of our families hold traditional values. younger generation working alongside their elders to get jobs like harvesting, milking or egg-grading done. Generations work and play together and, yes, sit down to eat and converse together when a day’s work is done. On a farm, life and work are inextricably linked, everyone’s involved, so the family unit is strong as are the individuals who make up that unit.

Involvement is key to a child’s well-being. At Nursery children are involved in every aspect of the day; mostly involving fun but there is also work to be done – tidying up, washing the dolls’ clothes, picking fruit, preparing food etc. and the children respond well when they are given responsibility for such jobs. Indeed, it’s through such activities that they learn to operate in a team, negotiating and problem-solving among themselves. October Wildlife A warm spring followed by a wet summer has led to a glut of spiders. If you look on gorse bushes you can see some big fat ones anchored in the middle of spectacular circular webs. I was once told that these were called fox spiders, but have since learnt that this was incorrect. The correct name for this species is the garden spider and some of them are quite a size, with the body being about the same size as the end joint of an average index finger.

Another familiar spider is the house spider, tegenaria domestica. This is the one that is often found skittering round the bottom of your bathtub. The vast majority of spiders are predators and use fangs to inject venom into their prey in order to kill and subsequently eat it. However, most British species are either

docile or else lack the tools to pierce human skin. One notable exception is the woodlouse spider, which, as its name suggests feeds mainly on woodlice. As woodlice are protected by a tough exoskeleton, their nemesis is armed with some hefty fangs to penetrate their defences. These fangs can also pierce human skin as some people have found to their cost.

Species introduced to the UK from southern Europe are often implicated in spider bites that necessitate medical attention. And there is always a chance that a bunch of bananas might well harbour an unwelcome guest, with a bad attitude and a sense of resentment at being disturbed.

HAMBLETON W.I.Barry Band a retired reporter from the Lancashire Evening Post and Blackpool Gazette who had interviewed many of the artistes who headlined shows in Blackpool was our entertainer for the monthly meeting with “Blackpool’s Old Time Comedy Greats”. He described how the Great Comedians, all northerners, came to the many theatres at Blackpool in the 1950’s as an antidote to the austerity war years. For 16 weeks of the “Season” Comics such as Harry Corris, Al Read, Norman Evans, Hilda Baker, Jimmy Clitheroe, Frank Randle, George Formby, Dora Bryan, and of course Ken Dodd entertained packed houses.

Our Ken gave over 2,500 performances whilst at Blackpool and never finished on time, you had to be sure to have an alternative method of getting home when you saw Ken’s shows, the stage manager used to throw a set of keys on stage, as if to say “you lock up when you’ve finished”!

Hilda Baker became a household name after 34 years on the boards and one T.V. act with a silent male partner whom she called Cynthia with a catch phrase “She knows you know” and had to turn to character acting for a living and was very successful as Nellie Pledge in “Nearest and Dearest” with Jimmy Jewel in a fictitious pickle factory. Hilda was famous for her malapropisms “brandy we only use that for mediaeval purposes”

Frank Randle had a ‘blue’ reputation but in fact every word was censored by the Royal Chamberlain’s office in London where clerks would blue pencil out any reference to the Royal Family or swear words. The local police always came on first nights to check that all was in order.

Al Read had been a decorator, a driving instructor, proprietor of a sausage factory when he got the showbiz bug and used overheard conversations and local people’s sayings for his observational comedy act.

Barry was thanked by Marjorie Fleming for reminding us of how great these comedians were and entertaining us with his anecdotes. The competition was a Funny postcard and was won by Glennis Dunckerly.

Lancashire Federation WI Bowling Finals Sunday 18th September, Hambleton had two teams who got through to the finals, unfortunately we were drawn against each other in the semi-finals so Bernice Heeley and Chris Seed were knocked out at this stage, Patricia Hardy and Patricia Furness went on to the final round but were beaten by the team from Crank. Well done for getting so far.
