CROSS COUNTRY SKI & SOAKFebruary 25, 9 a.m.Cost is $15/person. Must be at least 18+ to enter the rock pool.

After skiing, relax in the outdoor rock pool at Chena Hot Springs! Transportation, ski equipment, and instruction is provided. No experience necessary. Bring warm clothes, lunch, water, swimwear and a towel for the hot springs!

SNOW MACHINE SAFETY COURSEFebruary 11, 9 a.m.Age: 18+, no cost

This class is required to rent snowmachines from the ORC.

WOMEN IN THE WILDERNESS: ICE FISHINGFebruary 4, 8 a.m. Fee: $25/person. An Alaska state fishing license is required for this trip.

If you are new to ice fishing, then here is your chance to see how it’s done. ORC will provide transportation, rod and reel, bait, ice fishing hut with wood stove, and the know-how to get you started. The trip will be postponed if the temp dropsbelow -20 degrees.

ALYESKA SKI/SNOWBOARD ADVENTUREFebruary 10 – 12, 5 p.m. departure. Fee: $175 per person

Venture for the weekend at Alyeska Resort. ORC provides transportation, lodging and a lift ticket. Participants will need to provide their own food, ski/snowboard gear (bring your own or rent), and warm clothes.

MACLAREN RIVER LODGEFebruary 17 – 19 (Must register by Feb. 3). Departs at 8 a.m.Fee: $300 per person

Take a snow machine trip out to Maclaren lodge. This is the perfect getaway and a true Alaskan experience. This program is weather dependent subject to blizzards, white-out conditions and extreme temperatures. Participants need warm boots, cold weather clothing, hand/foot warmers, and a good pair of gloves.

CROSS COUNTRY SKIING LESSONSArrange with instructor. call 361-2652. Age: 10 and older. Fee: $5 per person

Sessions run between 45 minutes and an hour. Equipment is provided. Lessons will be postponed if the temperatures falls below -10°F.

SPECIAL STORY HOURFebruary 17, 4 p.m.The Library is partnering with the National Education Association of Alaska to bring “Read Across Alaska” to Fort Wainwright. We’ll be kicking off this statewide event with sled dog stories and a sled dog craft! Mary Shields, local author and the first female to finish the Iditarod, will be visiting the Library along with sled dog, Clifford. We will also be making a card for Iditarod musher Hugh Neff to present to the children of Nome!

MULTICULTURALSTORY HOURFebruary 8, 4:30 p.m. Native Alaska! Susan Paskvan of Yukon-Koyukuk School District will share a traditional Koyukon Athabascan story, TOBAAN ETSEH (a story of a beaver-- We will all have a taste of an Athabascan treat and experience local art, too!

This is a kick-off event to the NEA’s READ ACROSS ALASKA.

Hear the call! There will be crafts and snacks and fun for all! Special guest readers will read the story (one may be tall)! A drawing will be held for a handmade Lorax statue, so be on the ball.
