Future Technologies in the Classroom
What do teachers do? (the basics)
• Communicate information to the students
• Interact with students
What technologies are on the way and how will they help us do those things?
Microsoft Surface
What can we do with this technology today?
• Replace Smart boards
• Let the class rotate around the surface– Post notes and review sheets to the surface by
“scanning them”– Keep attendance through students scanning in– Students can submit work and immediately
upload it anywhere
What will we be able to do with this in the future?
• Replace desks– When the screens get smaller, thinner, and of
course more affordable, use them for desk tops– Fingerprint sign-ins– Write tests on desks– Paperless classrooms– Full compatibility with students’ PEDs– All actions monitored with student specific id’s
PEDs
.......NO
What can we do with this technology today?
• Students can access the internet outside of the computer lab
• Books and other material can be read without needing a hard copy
• Communication between teacher and student outside of the classroom is instant (message forwarding to cell phones
What can we do with this technology in the future?
• New application continuously being released enable new abilities for all devices, blackberry pins
• Paperless classrooms
• New applications enable cross platform communication and compatibility
The Matrix
I mean...
The internet!
What do we do with it today?
• Distance education• Interact with resources (other classrooms,
authors, print sources)• Winnipeg school division created school-
portal based instant messaging program– Students had to sign in, identifying themselves– Students could access their school files at home
and work on them collaboratively
What can we do with it in the future?
• At home education
• Moodle-like websites for all schools
• Language immersion classrooms from across the globe
• Bring education to areas of the world where it is needed most
To Recap
• Do not destroy student property• New technologies are constantly arriving• Teachers must focus on cross-platform
compatibility• Do not exclude student• Don’t use technology for technology’s sake,
teach content• Good luck to ya
