What is personalized learning?

Personalized learning is: Personalized learning is not:

Leveraging technology to place more students and teachers in successful learning environments

Replacing teachers with computers

Creating conditions to make teachers more efficient and effective

Having all students work on computers all day long

Providing students with opportunities to receive the support they need when they need it during the school day

A mandated system that will take away from school and teacher autonomy

Our best one to one device will always be great teachers!

What are student-centered approaches?

Learning is personalized

Students are engaged in their own success. Learning is aligned with their interests and skills. Students support each other’s progress and celebrate success.

Students move ahead when they have demonstrated mastery of content, not when they’ve reached a certain birthday or endured the required hours in a classroom.

Students benefit from individually-paced, targeted learning tasks that start from where the student is, formatively assess existing skills and knowledge, and address the student’s needs and interests.

Learning takes place beyond the traditional school day and year. The school’s walls are permeable–learning is not restricted to the classroom.

Personalized learning and device rollout

Critical component of the strategic plan

• Strategic initiative #1: Continuous achievement and customized learning

• Strategic initiative #7: Student access

• Strategic initiative #11: Challenging and innovative instruction

• Strategic initiative #13: Stakeholder skills

Page 15: Future Ready Education: Unleashing Innovation To The Enterprise

Pathway to personalized learningStudent devices are a critical step for transforming learning to meet our strategic goals.

Low tech classroom

• Technology not available /consistently used

High tech classroom

• Classroom has technology including interactive projectors

• All students have access to devices

• Teachers and students access digital content and software

Blended classroom

• Teachers differentiate instruction allows more efficiently and effectively using technology

• Supports Continuous Achievement framework

Competency based classroom

• Students assessed on mastery of standards

• Students accelerate or decelerate based on progress

• Student choice in demonstrating mastery of standards

• Truth in grading through Proficiency Scales

What each school goes through to get readyEducation Elements visits each school to understand where they are and what they need.

School planning teams go through a 2 hour simulation to understand personalized and blended learning.

Schools use design thinking to identify problems to be solved and begin to sketch out personalized learning models to address that problem.

Schools work on their instructional model and start professional development and communications plans.

Schools finalize their instructional, professional development and communications plans.

Instructional plans are approved by Area Superintendents. The 4 marketplace devices are tested. School Governance Councils approve selection.

Schools implement their communications and professional development plans, and phase in instructional shifts and devices at their own pace.

Overall readiness

Instructional readiness:

Schools have a plan for how devices will be used to support learning

Infrastructure readiness:

School infrastructure is upgraded and ready to handle 1:1 student devices

Device readiness:

Schools have selected a device and have a deployment plan set with IT

School instructional readiness

Readiness = schools have a plan for how devices will be used to support learning.

School teams go through a series of workshops to design their instructional, professional development, and communication plans.

Plans include proper pace and cadence for successful rollout with on-going support for teachers to ensure success

Schools create a digital citizenship plan to teach students appropriate, responsible technology use.

School infrastructure readiness

Readiness = school infrastructure is upgraded and ready to handle 1:1 student devices.

School bandwidth is upgraded

“Heat map” of current school wireless coverage is reviewed

Wireless access points are added and tuned

Page 21: Future Ready Education: Unleashing Innovation To The Enterprise

Device readinessReadiness = schools have selected a device and have a deployment plan set with IT.

• School device selection committee (students, teachers, parents, administration) chooses the device that best fits the school instructional plan. School Governance Council votes to approve.

• Schools work with Safety & Security on how to secure devices at the school.

• School agrees on delivery timeline with IT and device vendor.

• Devices are ordered!
