At 3M, we collaborate and apply science in powerful ways to improve lives daily. With $32 billion in sales, our 90,000 employees connect with and serve customers all around the world. The UK and Ireland is home to one of the largest 3M subsidiaries outside the USA, employing 3,000 people across 17 locations, including nine manufacturing sites. Products manufactured in the UK include coated abrasives, personal safety equipment, adhesive tapes, industrial microbiology products, drug delivery systems, high-performance coatings and imaging systems.

In 2007, 3M acquired E Wood, who manufactured high performance coatings for use in the oil, gas, water, rail and automotive industries under the Copon brand. Its Thortex and Thistlebond brands included a range of industrial maintenance products for the long‑term protection of buildings, structures and machinery equipment operating in industrial and marine environments. Now they have been rebranded under the Scotchkote brand.

The combination of 3M’s corrosion protection technologies and global presence with E Wood’s strong product line of specialty coatings for industrial markets positions 3M as the premier source of protective solutions for infrastructure in a wide number of markets.

3M manufactures a wide range of versatile waterproofing coatings for roofs, balconies, cladding, glazing and floors that are completely cold applied, can be specified to your project requirements and are easy to apply, long lasting systems.

All roof surfaces are subject to continual attack from the weather and from environmental pollution. During the life-span of a roof, its surface is subjected to differential movement and degradation which, left unchecked, will lead to premature roof failure.

Experience proves that many traditional flat roofing materials, particularly felts, asphalt and other tar based products, are prone to early failure. They are subject

to embrittlement, substrate movement and heat absorption, causing fatigue within the material and failure at joints – leading inevitably to breakdown and subsequent water ingress.

3M™ Scotchkote™ Liquid Roofing Membranes offer sustainable advantages over traditional roofing materials with a range of systems that can meet varied and differing requirements – with anticipated life times up to 25 years.

These tough seamless roofing systems give exceptional durability, exceeding many times the life of traditional resurfacing systems. Our liquid roofing membranes can be used on all types of roofs and are designed for both new build and refurbishment projects and are especially effective when dealing with complex problem areas such as valley gutters, parapet walls, roof plant and air vents.

15 & 20 Year Pitched Roof Systems3M™ Scotchkote™ Roofing 15 and 20 Year Life to First Maintenance systems for pitched roofs based on 3M™ Scotchkote™ roofing products Poly‑Tech EC 661 and Poly‑Tech UV 662 is an ideal solution for cost effective waterproofing of all types of pitched and corrugated sloping roofs with a pitch greater than 15°. Pitched roofs are locally reinforced on all joints, overlaps and bolt heads with 3M™ Scotchkote™ 100gm Premier 050 reinforcing mat in 10" wide rolls. We also now make 3M™ Scotchkote™ SDR 655 as an alternative to matting.

Requiring only local reinforcing to joints, seams and overlaps this high build, moisture cured system provides a cost effective and versatile system for long term waterproofing. Ideal for corrugated

Feature & benefits Ŕ Long term systems – 15 and 20 year life to first maintenance

Ŕ Only local reinforcing on joint and seams required reducing application costs

Ŕ All areas of the roof encapsulated and protected against water ingress

Ŕ Simple brush/roller application – no complex or expensive tools required to apply

Ŕ Non‑foaming – reducing likelihood of air entrapment and blisters

Ŕ No need to remove and dispose of existing roof materials – saving costs on waste

Ŕ Independently tested – European Technical Approval (E.T.A.)

Cladding refurbishment systemPlastic coated metal sheeting is now one of the most common forms of external cladding on industrial, commercial and leisure buildings occupying large areas of floor space.

In general, the plastic coatings can be categorised into three types:1) Plastisol (organisol), is a form of PVC and is usually

recognised by a textured (crocodile skin‑like) surface which, when new, is approximately 1mm thick.

2) PVF2 plastic is based on polyvinyl fluoride and is usually a smooth or regular textured surface with a much lower film build than plastisol.

3) Polyester powder coating that has a perfectly smooth surface.

All three surfaces offer extended durability and usually the prime reason for coating such surfaces is a cosmetic one where refurbishment, upgrade and colour change is required. However, over an extended period of time all the plastic surfaces become thinner and are subject to micro‑checking leading eventually to failure, de‑bonding and under‑edge corrosion problems.

3M™ Scotchkote™ Roofing Wall‑Tech PU 846 moisture triggered polyurethane is the first choice material to provide optimum, long term performance on these types of cladding. The flexibility of the material ensures that the coating can cope easily with the natural movement and flexing of the plastisol sheeting due to environmental conditions. Scotchkote roofing Wall‑Tech PU 846 has been tested by Corus Group PLC for use as an over‑paint system for the refurbishment of the widely used Colourcoat® HPS 200® sheeting.

The condition of aged / weathered plastisol can vary depending on exposure to sunlight. Surfaces exposed to the most sunlight (south facing in the northern hemisphere and north facing in the southern hemisphere) will deteriorate more quickly than sheltered areas.

The first stage of ageing is loss of gloss and chalking. As the ageing process continues fine micro‑checking develops and eventually complete loss of adhesion and delaminating occurs. Polyester powder and PVF2 plastic surfaces do not normally degrade with age and are coated, in the main, for cosmetic reasons.

3M™ Scotchkote™ roofing Wall‑Tech PU 846 is a single component, solvent based, moisture cured flexible polyurethane coating. It is based on a unique blend of aliphatic resins reinforced with colour stable and chemical resistant pigments to produce a coating which offers a tough, durable finish with excellent erosion, weather and UV resistance.

When applied correctly in accordance with the appropriate Scotchkote system recommendation, this material will give a design life of 10 years dramatically reducing external exposure degradation, chalking or deterioration of adhesion. Onto correctly prepared and clean HPS 200® surfaces Scotchkote Wall‑Tech PU 846 does not require a primer. For most applications a single coat is all that is needed, although for certain total colour changes a second coat may be required.

3M provides the cure at Royal Berkshire HospitalA roof at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading is finally free of scaffolding after several years thanks to a roofing solution from 3M.

The flat roof covering the radiology department had been leaking, but the NHS Foundation Trust did not have the budget to replace it. Scaffolding had been put up to support a temporary roof until funds could be found to complete the job.

The hospital’s facilities manager had received quotes to replace the old roof, but these were very expensive. We suggested repairing it using 3M™ Scotchkote™ Roofing Premier Plus Liquid Membrane which worked out at around half the cost of the other quotes and gives a Life to First Maintenance of 25 years.

3M™ Scotchkote™ Roofing Systems can be applied via either brush or roller. They bond with the substrate to form a seamless waterproof coating which can withstand the elements and is UV stable. The entire product offering covers a complete range of requirements, with Life to First Maintenance of between five and 25 years.

Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust commented:

“This job was complicated by the amount of plant in situ on the roof, including air conditioning units, electrical cable trays and ceiling lights. This meant that a solution involving a solid membrane was not viable due to the amount of cutting that would have been required. The 3M solution was considerably more cost effective as well as offering a guaranteed seal around all of these items due to its ability to be ‘painted’ right up to them.”

As well as being competitive on cost, the fact that no heat is needed in the application process means that, unlike bituminous systems, there was no requirement for a fire marshal to comply with insurance requirements.
