When the World Rally and recently FIA GT Series Champion Sébastien Loeb first publicised hisintent to race Pikes Peak in 2013, most people asked the same question: in what? “America’sMountain” is not for the faint of heart. One hundred and fifty-six turns, which culminates to analtitude of 4,301 metres’ is no simple matter.

You don’t just wake up one day and decide to race it. This is a calling, and Peugeot Sport believesthey have the right machine to help Loeb to answer that call: the 208 T16.

The Red Bull-sponsored beast, like its predecessor the 405 T16, is based on the Peugeot 208’sproduction model. However, that’s where the resemblance ends because the 208 T16 has beendesigned to compete in the Unlimited Division.

Peugeot have remained quiet on the power under the hood but with Peugeot’s rich history withthe Pikes Peak race, you can bet they will not just be there to finish the race., They will want towin and break the world record………. If they can!

So many modern convertible cars today have a retractable hard top roof made popular by therelease of the Peugeot 206CC. Introduced in 2000, the cabriolet featured a powered fold-awayroof, what is not so well known is that a retractable hard roof was first seen on a Peugeot wayback in 1935!

Peugeot cars of the 1920s were relatively upright and orthodox. By the early 1930s, somestreamlining was becoming evident, but it was the 402 model, introduced in 1935, that set newstandards in design.

The 402 had a radically sloped grille behind which sat both headlamps and the battery. With asloping rear tail, the cars had vestigial exterior running boards and the effect was quite dramatic.

If the standard 402 was dramatic, the Éclipse was something else. In 1934, using a Peugeot 301chassis, Parisian dentist Georges Paulin had designed and patented a retractable hard top, thefirst such fully-retractable, automatic system. Paulin, whose business was crowns and fillings butwhose passion was automobiles, did the first one for coach builder Marcel Pourtout. Peugeotconsidered its hydro-mechanical retracting mechanism too complicated, and declined to becomeinvolved, so Paulin and Pourtout bought a number of bare chassis and began producing them.

The car was extremely well received, and was followed by several other examples using largerPeugeot chassis. In 1935 Paulin sold his patent to Peugeot, and small runs on 402 chassis, usinga simple mechanical retraction system, were made until World War II.

The new mechanism was so brilliantly designed that it could be lowered or erected by one person.According to archives, fewer than 500 Éclipse décapotables were built; the number surviving isbelieved to be somewhere between 14 and 30. The Éclipse is a milestone design,a quintessential icon of the Art Deco era of coach building.
