The Bluebook reflects the range and breadth of organizations working in the region to advance social wellbeing. This centralized, accessible resource provides information about the sector that can be utilized to strengthen partnerships and collaborations among social profit organizations, grantmakers, donors and volunteers. One of the driving purposes behind the creation of this directory is that it will become an essential tool, amongst others, that will help to enhance connection among organizations within the social profit sector, and other sectors. The information contained in this directory is an enhanced profile of the sector, improving our understanding of the social infrastructure in Wood Buffalo.

The directory focuses entirely on social profit organizations. It is therefore a one stop shop for those seeking information on social profit organizations in the Municipality.

This first edition is subject to improvements as the information contained in it gets further refined.

The information contained in this directory is the result of substantial effort to identify, quantify, and categorize social profit organizations in the region. We wish to thank those who gave of their time and knowledge to create this pioneering product - the Bluebook.

how the Bluebook was createdOne of the critical elements from the onset of the creation of this directory is the accuracy of the information being presented. To ensure that the information in the directory is accurate, we reviewed several documents and consulted with a select group of individuals in the community. We essentially applied a multi-layered approach that enabled us to accurately reflect the information gathered in the pages that follow.

step 1We started with a review of a research report commissioned by the Nonprofit Sector Link. We extracted an inventory list, which was compiled as part of the research project. Since this inventory list was compiled in 2012, we first had to then verify that all the organizations on this list are still in operation as social-profit organizations.

step 2 To confirm the organizations listed on the Nonprofit Sector Linkโ€™s inventory, we first turned to CHIMP. CHIMP seeks to simplify the process by which an individual, who wishes to make financial donation to a registered charity in Canada, can do so with minimal interference. As part of its activities, CHIMP maintains a list of registered charities throughout Canada, which we compiled. We also obtained a list of registered charities from the Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA).

This list from CRA is frequently updated. At the time of the creation of this directory, this list represented the most up to date information on registered charities in Canada.

step 3 To identify the social profit organizations that are registered charities, we cross-referenced the list of social profit organizations we obtained by combining information from CHIMP, CRA and the Nonprofit Sector Link. During this process, organizations that were common among the three lists, were extracted to create a separate list. Since the combined CHIMP and CRA list was up to date as of 2014, this implied that the organizations that were common between the three lists were still in operation. The status of organizations that were not common to the three lists in 2014 could not be ascertained based on the information at hand. Therefore, we had to determine if these organizations were still operational as of 2014, and if they were indeed social profit organizations.

Page 9: Fusesocial Bluebook directory - July 2014

step 4To ascertain the operational status of the organizations not common to the three lists compiled from CHIMP, CRA, and the Nonpofit Sector Link, we conducted a search on the google search engine, and 211 Alberta.

For example, we looked for things such as the date of the last item that was posted on the website. If the organization is not operational, we discard it from the list. However, if it is operational, we focused on establishing that it is a social profit organization. For this we looked for clues in their mission or vision statement. This approach yielded tremendous results, as we were able to confirm the social profit status of many organizations on the list.

We also contacted individuals associated with the sector, including treasurers, board chairpersons, executive directors, and others. Information compiled include: telephone number, website address, physical and mailing address, and email address. This process yielded a total of 185 social profit organizations in the Municipality.

Page 10: Fusesocial Bluebook directory - July 2014

step 5We then categorized these 185 social profit organizations by matching what they do as declared in their mission statement, and other information gathered, to the United Nations International Classification of Non-Profit Organizations (ICNPO).

The ICNPO consists of the following 12 categories: Group 1 Culture and recreation Group 2 Education and research Group 3 Health Group 4 Social services Group 5 Environment Group 6 Development and housing Group 7 Law, advocacy and politics Group 8 Philanthropic intermediaries and voluntarism promotion Group 9 International Group 10 Religion Group 11 Business and professional associations, unions Group 12 Not elsewhere classified

Each of the 12 groups consists of subgroups depicting specific activities, to allow a more accurate classification. For further information on the ICNPO, please visit: www.statcan.gc.ca/pub/13-015-x/2009000/sect13-eng.htm

Together, we can further the impact of social profit organizations in Wood Buffalo. The Bluebook is a first step in creating a living database - it is a work in progress. New organizations, networks and coalitions will be included in time and with further outreach. If you know of an organization that should be added to the list, please contact us at [email protected] and we will be happy to include the information in our next publication.

Disclaimer: This Bluebook is provided for information purposes only. Inclusion in the directory does not endorse, recommend or imply any approval of the organizations listed.
