SIEMENS Fusesaver®
Some Typical Transient Faults
Fusesaver - OC & O-CO Modes
Fusesaver OC Fusesaver OCO
Fusesaver clears transient faults before fuse melts. Fusesaver clears transient fault
Fuse clears permanent fault. Fusesaver does 2nd trip to lockout to clear permanent fault.
Best application where fuses are already installed. Just add a Fusesaver OC to achieve improved reliability of fused lateral lines.
Best application on networks that don’t use fuses, i.e. replaces the drop out sectionalizer with better performance.

Siemens Fusesaver Safety Features
Feature Light Weight – 12lb Can be easily lifted into position. Once installed, no external movement Fault breaking is contained inside the
Fusesaver. For type OC type, the fuse breaks permanent fault and can be easily replaced. For the O-CO type, reset is made by pushing the external close lever.
60 seconds “walk away” Once a TRIP or CLOSE lever is pushed there is a 60 second delay to clear the area before operation. The LED light indicates status.
Automation At The Fuse Single-phase or Three-phase “ganged” configuration
The Fusesaver can operate in either a pure single-phase mode or as a member of a coordinated group of two or three. Short range radios in the Fusesaver allow it to connect to up to two nearby Fusesavers and form a “tribe”. Allows synchronized manual tripping of three phases. Allows three-phase lockout

Siemens Connect: PC with wireless connection
Siemens Connect provides a means for utility personnel to interface with the Fusesaver during installation, workshop testing, system upgrades, and for fault finding Wirelessly connects to the Fusesaver Automatically downloads all events and data logs on connection. Saves data into an offline database for offsite analysis Data analysis to verify performance or identify settings modifications
Page 13
Fusesaver - Automation At The Fuse Pre-defined and Configurable Device Profiles
A profile is uploaded into each Fusesaver that determines how the device will behave. An appropriate, pre-validated profile is selected from a profile database containing only those profiles relevant to the user. Pre-defined profiles speed up installation by keeping commissioning to a minimum.
Page 14
Siemens Fusesaver Event Log
The Fusesaver’s event database saves up to 3,000 significant events such as a protection trip, auto close, manual operation, protection mode change or line current off. The events are normally marked with the time of occurrence and are displayed in sequence.
Siemens Fusesaver Site performance data
Reliability Data Availability Data The purpose of the line reliability analysis tool is to allow the user to generate useful reliability performance data for a particular line.
The availability analysis tool is to assist the user to assess whether there is enough line current available to power the Fusesaver on a consistent basis. The line availability represents the percentage of time that line current is on in a given period.
Siemens Fusesaver Load Profiling
The Fusesaver is normally installed on lines where the utility typically has few devices that provide information on demand.
The Fusesaver captures the minimum, maximum and average current for each 24 hour period.
This data is stored in on-board non-volatile memory and is downloaded by Siemens Connect as part of the event log.
Note : Load profile data is not available as a DNP3 analogue point. The user would use the line current as DNP 3 analogues in this case.

The Fusesaver – A Low Cost Switching Solution
1. Siemens Fusesaver Basic Operation Protects against outage from a Transient
(Temporary) Fault condition at Fuse
2. Siemens Fusesaver Advanced Operation
The addition of a communications module provides
advanced Fusesaver operations.
3. Siemens Fusesaver Advanced Operation + RCU SCADA Interface
The addition of RCU achieves greater value and
service of the Fusesaver asset
Uses the existing communications network
Fusesaver - Automation At The Fuse Fusesavers as participants in Distribution Automation
With their integrated sensing they are another point of SCADA visibility. With their self-powered magnetic actuator and remotely selectable protection modes they are another point of SCADA control. It has memory to store the histories of the events and loads seen by these sensors or to make these events available to SCADA and DA schemes. An application example could be for them to be put into single-shot mode after a particular fault event handled by DA.
