PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The curriculum in the Furnishings and Interiors major focuses on the design of residential
buildings and interiors. The program is accredited by the National Kitchen and Bath Association
(NKBA). The Furnishings and Interiors Program provides a rigorous program of study designed for
students who are serious about pursuing a career in residential interior design. Courses impart design
skills and knowledge in areas including: design fundamentals; oral, written and graphic
communication; illustration and presentation methods; computer-aided drawing; 3-D computer
modeling and rendering; residential-oriented design studios; kitchen and bath design; interior
materials and finishes; textile end-use and performance; building systems and construction; lighting
design; analysis, specification and estimation of materials and furnishings; historic architecture,
interiors and furnishings; and professional practices.
Speakers, field trips and study tours permit students to have contact with professional interior
designers, kitchen and bath designers, builders and other industry professionals. The program
maintains a newly renovated 12,000 square foot space with multiple dedicated studios; dedicated
computer labs with access to graphic design software such as Autodesk AutoCAD, Revit Architecture,
3D Studio Max, Impression, the Adobe Creative Suite, and the Microsoft Office Suite, as well as a
large-format scanner and plotter; extensive resource room and library with current material samples
available for student use; locker rooms; a gallery; a classroom and a student lounge. Entrance is
competitive, enrollment is limited, and all decisions are final.
PROGRAM APPLICATION PROCESS
Students are eligible to apply to the Furnishings and Interiors program through the submission of
an application form, portfolio, and program admission essay once they have completed or are in the
process of completing the following requirements:
At least 45 credit hours.
ARST 1050 – Drawing I, or student may also be registered to take course in Spring
(you must be an intended FI major to register for this course).
TXMI 2350 - Design Fundamentals for Residential Interiors
TXMI 2360 - Studio I: Design Communication
Students applying for the Furnishings and Interiors program must be in good academic standing
with a current cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher. The courses listed above, in addition to Chemistry
(CHEM 1110/1110L) and Statistics (STAT 2000), are critical prerequisites for required courses in the
major. All prerequisite courses must be successfully completed prior to taking the designated major
courses. Specific questions or circumstances related to these requirements should be directed to the
student’s FI advisor.

TRANSFER STUDENTS
Students transferring credits form another institution or wishing to substitute comparable
courses from another program may be eligible to meet the ARST 1050, TXMI 2350 and TXMI 2360
prerequisites. If the student wishes to transfer or substitute credits, the following items should be
provided to the student’s advisor:
1. Official transcript from transferring university that clearly identifies the comparable transfer
course(s) a student would like to submit for consideration.
2. A printed copy of the interior design program description from the student’s former design
program.
3. A printed course description for each completed course being submitted for transfer
consideration from the institution where the course(s) were completed.
4. A printed copy of the course syllabi If student does not have an official course syllabus he or she
must demonstrate course similarities through project/assignment description(s) and
documentation of completed projects.
5. A design portfolio of completed design projects or related assignments from each of the
courses being submitted for transfer consideration. Students may choose to submit either a
digital or physical portfolio.
To be considered for transfer, students must submit all of the above listed documents at least
one semester prior to their application for admission. Students may submit materials to:
Ms. Anne Allen, 357 Dawson Hall, [email protected] OR
Ms. Sarah Zenti, 212 Barrow Hall, [email protected]
After approval that the transfer courses meet the eligibility requirements of ARST 1050, TXMI
2350 and 2360 the student may submit a portfolio for review to enter the program. This may mean
that a student will be submitting the application, portfolio, and program admission essay to become a
Furnishings and Interiors major before official acceptance to UGA. Acceptance into the FI major DOES
NOT guarantee acceptance into the University of Georgia.
EVALUATION CRITERIA
Applications, portfolios, and program admission essays will be evaluated by the Furnishings and
Interiors Portfolio Review Committee. The committee is looking for well-developed ability, talent, skill
and the work ethic required to fulfill the rigorous course work required. Entrance is competitive,
enrollment is limited, and decisions are final.
The number of applicants accepted is based on the committee’s evaluation of the potential for
student success in the program as well as physical limitations of studio space. The Furnishings and
Interiors Portfolio Review Committee reserves the right to consider or not consider applications and
portfolios received after the due date depending on the availability of spaces within the program.

ask TMI faculty of staff for results, they are not permitted to give this information via phone or
email. Students who are accepted to the program will receive a change of major form that must be
signed and returned to the program before the process is complete and they are cleared to register
for classes. Students will be required to return their change of major form by the due date indicated
on their acceptance letter to the address indicated on their acceptance letter or they will forfeit their
placement within the program. A students’ status of intended FI Major will be changed to FI Major

PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS
A portfolio is required for acceptance into the Furnishings and Interiors program. Students must
submit a portfolio (or collection of work) with a minimum of 8 pieces and a maximum of 12 pieces of
work created while enrolled in core-required courses. Students are allowed to submit any other artwork
completed outside of the core FI courses as additional portfolio examples but are not allowed to include
them in place of core work. Students should take care to not include poorly executed work that could
potentially lower their portfolio evaluation. Students should also take care in making appropriate
selections for the portfolio submission. FI faculty and portfolio review committee members may NOT
review any portfolio or provide any advice regarding what a student should or should not include in
their portfolio prior to the review. Every student is expected to independently select the work to be
included in their portfolio.
Potential portfolio submission items from core classes (ARST 1050, TXMI 2350, TXMI 2360):
Note: the following items are only suggestions, not requirements
Hand drafted floor plans, elevations, sections, and details from TXMI 2360
Design projects from TXMI 2350
Still-life drawings and Anatomy/figure drawings
Value drawings executed in conte and ink
Color projects with gouache or other color media
Rendered perspective drawings
Interiors presentation boards
Additional items that can also be part of a student’s portfolio include, but are not limited to:
Artwork: Oil, acrylic, watercolors, sculpture
Craftwork: pottery, glass-making, metal working, furniture (photograph of work)
Photography: black and white and color (not snap-shots)
Students must submit items flat, inside a 24” x 36” paper portfolio carrier (everything must fit
inside the portfolio). Students wishing to submit anything breakable (ceramics, paintings, etc.) should
submit a photograph rather than the physical piece. Pieces larger than the portfolio case may be
included as a photograph. Portfolios are due on December 11 between 9:00-9:30 am. Students must
drop off their portfolio in Room 208, Barrow Hall by 9:30am and pick it up at the beginning of spring
semester. Consideration for portfolios submitted after the due date and time will be left up to the
discretion of the FI Portfolio Review Committee.
