INTRODUCTION AND GUIDANCE

YEAR 10 INTO 11

This year group will choose two Learning Pathways and have a greater number of English and Maths lessons. 5 A*-C grades including English and Maths is still the key performance measure for all students. The second key performance measure is a student’s eight best Level 2 qualifications. In Year 11 students should be very much focused on GCSE courses. Where possible, students should avoid taking courses which overlap. As a result of new discounting rules it is not advisable to take a BTEC and a GCSE in the same subject. Students should consider retaking a course when: They studied a subject which is important to their future career and education plans in

Year 9.This is particularly important with regard to Post 16 provision, where often a grade B is the minimum requirement for A Level study.

Their achievement in a subject area falls significantly below their target grade. They achieved below grade C in a subject. YEAR 9 INTO 10 Progress 8 is the new performance measure to be introduced for the first time for this year group – replacing the notion of 5A*-C passes. Student progress will be measured in 8 key subjects, which divide into three defined groupings: Two of the eight subjects must be English and Maths Three subjects must be from the EBACC suite (Science, MFL, Humanities and Computer

Science) The remaining three can come from the full range of GCSE and vocational qualifications. With the focus now very much on progress and a system which openly discourages early entry the Academy curriculum needs to change to ensure students achieve the Progress 8 measure: Students will now take GCSE courses over two years; taking examinations at the end of

Year 11. All students will take a Humanity and a second subject from the EBACC group – students

who selected the EBACC pathway last year should continue with their studies. All students will have two additional choices, and, where appropriate they should try and

build upon their Year 9 learning by either retaking a course to ensure they achieve a qualification or moving onto GCSE provision.

ensure students achieve the progress 8 measures Students will choose two additional subjects in Year 9 – based on their skills, interests and

personal needs. They will not sit examinations in these subjects but they should choose with a view to

taking the GCSE course the following year.

This course will provide you with a wide range of creative, exciting and stimulating art

opportunities. You will actively engage in the processes of Art and Design to build creative skills

through learning and doing, to develop imaginative and intuitive ways of working and develop

knowledge and understanding of media, materials and technologies of historical and

contemporary art and cultures.

The course is a strong foundation for further progression to Fine Art GCSE.

HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? The course is 100% course work. You will create a body of work which will be presented as a portfolio and final outcome pieces. The work completed on this course may be used towards entry for GCSE if opted for at a later stage.

BUSINESS STUDIES WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? - An interest in business enterprise. - The ability to work with others as part of a team. - Motivated and enthusiastic learner - An Interest in how businesses work and what makes them successful. WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? This course will introduce you to the subject of business knowledge and will show you how to spot a successful business opportunity. You will learn why customer needs are central to starting a business, and what the different types of market research are and how the data can be collected and understood. Throughout the course you will be expected to work in groups collaborating with others, and often presenting your findings in the style of Dragon’s Den. You will be given the opportunity to take part in an Enterprise Project, where you will be able to put into practice the skills you are learning, with further information from local entrepreneurs who will be invited into school to share their experiences and ideas with you. This course will encourage you to develop your business knowledge, work with others to build your confidence and enable you to present your ideas in a creative and inventive way.

CARING FOR CHILDREN (Pre GCSE Health & Social Care) WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? To consider studying this course you should have an interest in further studying or working in the childcare sector. You need to have an open mind and be able to understand that there are many different ways of working with children. You need to be interested in the developments that children make and want to ultimately make a positive contribution towards their development, experiences and safety. Overall, you need to be willing to share ideas with others, be prepared to take part in discussions and be well organised and a good attender of school in order to ensure that you complete all requirements of the course. WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? This course has been designed to help learners gain the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to care for children generally. You will learn how to respect and value children as individuals, how to tell stories, plan musical and creative experiences and keep children safe. This course will be delivered through a wide range of practical activities; for example, make and play a variety of musical instruments, create picture books, and make a variety of crafts or toys. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? You will complete a number of projects over the period of a year.

WHY CHOOSE THIS COURSE: If you are interested in pursuing further study in Childcare or Health and Social care this course will give you the knowledge and practical skills to progress. You will have the opportunity to enjoy learning new skills about a wide range of opportunities within the Public Service sector .

You could also go on to complete a Level 1 Certificate in Public Services in year 10 /11, This can then be developed to study Public Services at college where completion of the course creates opportunities for employment within the Public Service sector.

CoPe CERTIFICATE OF PERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS (ASDAN) QUALIFICATION: · Level 1 – 25 points (equivalent to GCSE grade E/F) WHAT IS CoPE? The Certificate of Personal Effectiveness is a qualification that offers imaginative ways of accrediting young people’s activities. It promotes a wide range of personal qualities, abilities and achievements for young people, as well as introducing them to new activities and challenges. WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? · Be able to work independently and make connections over different areas of learning · Self-motivation and good organisational skills are essential for this course WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? You will gain credits by completing different challenges. You must produce a portfolio of evidence, demonstrating the skills you have acquired throughout the course. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? There is no examination and the course is assessed continually through the portfolio but in Year 9 it will be studied at Level 1 (equivalent to GCSE grade E/F)

This course seeks to provide knowledge, skill and understanding of dance and is an excellent introduction to the subject for those wishing to study dance at GCSE level. You must: · Have an interest in dance performance, choreography and analysis · Want to develop your knowledge and skills in dance · Want a chance of practical experience WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE ? Choreography classes will give you the chance to explore your own ideas and provide you with one to one support which will enable you to create your own work. Dance analysis sessions will also help to broaden your understanding of the subject. Basics in safe practice and health and safety for dancers are also covered. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? The course will be an ideal stepping stone to GCSE, covering many of the skills required. Your progress will be assessed throughout the year.

DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? Good organisation skills and ability to problem solve The ability to research, develop and present ideas using a variety of media An interest in Technology subjects A wish to take a Technology GCSE at a later date

WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? You will complete a range of design and make projects in each of the areas of Product Design, Food Technology, and Textiles. You will rotate around these units on a termly carousel throughout the academic year. Along with the designing & making skills specific to each unit, you will be taught a number of generic skills common to all of the units such as the design process, sketching & rendering and Health & safety. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? You will complete projects which are supplemented by a range of focused practical tasks aimed at building the necessary practical skills to produce high quality products. You will be assessed in accordance with the National Curriculum level descriptors. The course prepares students to be able to continue their studies at GCSE in their chosen area of

interest in year 10.

By opting into the Year 9 Drama course you will become part of a working, small scale Theatre Company to develop the skills and experience needed to perform in a range of different styles of drama. The aim of Year 9 Drama is to create quality performances for a range of audiences in school and outside of the Academy. You will develop your own performance skills with many chances to perform and gain feedback in a supportive atmosphere. WHAT SORT OF PROJECTS COULD I DO ON THE COURSE?

HUMANITIES

What skills and qualities do I need?

You need to have a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people.

The key skills you will use include: The ability to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement, collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through experiences of fieldwork interpret a range of sources of information, including maps, texts, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs and Geographical Information Systems (GIS)

What will I do on the course?

You will study a range of units including: crime and punishment, how methods of policing and investigation developed during the Victorian period, particularly in relation to the Jack the Ripper case; warfare in different time periods including the First and Second World Wars; how methods of protest brought about change, for example the Chartists and the Suffragettes. You will also be able to take part in local fieldwork enquiries investigating crime and the environment, investigate how our actions and choices as consumers may have global effects in our Globalisation and Fair Trade units and look more closely at the impacts of our use of resources on the planet and its wildlife by joining the energy debate. We aim to enable you to gain a knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world, to learn about diverse places and environments and develop a deeper understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes. In Geography, students will investigate the way that people and the planet interact, you will learn about the Earth’s features and will understand how they are shaped and change over time. In History, you will begin to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

How is the course organised and assessed? You will study an equal number of lessons of History and Geography your progress will be assessed throughout the year. There will be no end of year examination.

MEDIA STUDIES WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? An enthusiasm for learning about how television, radio, newspapers and magazines are

produced An interest in planning and making media texts of your own WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? You will study how and why the professionals create media texts and how to produce your own. You will develop your ability to understand and analyse real media texts, and will also have the opportunity to create your own media products, using specialist technology. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? The course will be an ideal stepping stone to GCSE, covering many of the skills required. Your progress will be assessed throughout the year.

MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? A positive attitude towards language learning with an open mind towards other cultures

and civilisations A willingness to have a go and not mind making mistakes and some prior knowledge of

your chosen language WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? During the year, you will be following a selection of topics from the following: My World (meeting people, home life, and education and future plans); Holidays and Leisure (outings, activities, travel and accommodation, French cinema); Lifestyle (celebrations, health and fitness, and food and drink); Young Person in Society (region and environment, media, and work and choices); At the end of each theme, there will be a celebration of learning in a creative activity. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? This course acts as a stepping stone towards GCSE. You can choose one language from French or German. In both cases, you will experience the most success if you have already studied your chosen language at Key Stage 3. The emphasis will be on communication and having fun learning a foreign language. There will be regular assessments so you can see how you are progressing.

MUSIC This Music course is designed to prepare/up-skill you for taking Music GCSE or BTEC Music the following year. It does not lead to a formal qualification itself. However, you may be able to prepare for and take Rock School/ABRSM/Trinity College of Music graded instrument/vocal examinations during the year if you are of a suitable standard. WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? Year 9 Music may also be taken as a stand-alone course that serves to develop your personal desire to learn an instrument but not necessarily lead to studying on further Music courses. You will need to be enthusiastic and committed to developing your individual instrumental/vocal performing skills. WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? Instrumental/voice tuition You will spend the majority of your time learning/practising a chosen instrument or voice. You will be encouraged to receive paired tuition and ensemble skill coaching via the Rock n Pop Academy or Classix Academy tuition programmes that operate after school hours. Parental contributions are required for students to access these tuition programmes (Please ask for details). Listening and Theory You will listen to relevant leading artists in your chosen instrument/genre and study their music and skills. You will also undertake a course to develop your general music and theory knowledge. This will help to prepare you for the BTEC/GCSE courses. Composing You will also be introduced to a range of computer software including Pro Tools, Sibelius, Garage Band and Digital Multi track recording techniques as part of the course. Music Activities You will be encouraged to attend at least one extracurricular music activity throughout the course: e.g. Rock n Pop Academy; Classix Academy; Academy Singers; Ceilidh Band, Samba Band, Keyboard Club.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION This course is designed to provide an introduction and base of knowledge for the accredited courses the PE Department delivers. WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? A strong desire to learn about my potential in order to take an accredited course in PE in the

near future. A willingness to work hard at both the theory and practical aspects of the course. You will need to display high levels of personal responsibility by being well organised and

respectful when working with others. WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? The course will introduce aspects of PE GCSE, Sport Btec and BTEC Outdoor and Adventurous Activities for students who have an interest in taking an accredited course at a later date. The course will include both theory and practical study with ongoing assessment of individual performance. Students will be expected to take on a variety of roles and work to develop their knowledge and skills in these areas. There will be the opportunity to gain accreditation during this course which will be beneficial in following courses such as BTEC and GCSE. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? Ongoing assessment throughout the course to assess suitability for further study. Some practical activities may require a late return to school.

APPRENTICESHIP PATHWAY EAL Engineering Level 1 WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? You must be on course to achieve at least five other qualifications You must be in Year 11 You must want to pursue a skilled apprenticeship with BAEsystems, or similar engineering

based industry. Have a desire to move onto the EAL Level 2 Engineering course at college You must have an interest in working with your hands and be prepared to spend time in a

workshop learning practical skills along with paper based activities to develop your portfolio and knowledge of working in Engineering

WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? This course offers you the opportunity to gain an understanding of the world of engineering in industry. You will be given the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the skills you need to be successful in pursuing a career in engineering. This course has been designed in liaison with our sponsor Furness College and BAEsystems. Successful completion of this course will guarantee students a placement at Furness College on the EAL Level 2 Engineering course. This is an identified selection area for BAE Apprenticeships. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? The course is both workshop and computer based (CAD/CAM) Students will need to study 5 Units, Unit 1- Working in Engineering is compulsory . The other

4 Units will be selected by the course Assessor Each Unit has a controlled assessment element to it, which is completed in the classroom or

workshop under examination conditions Students can gain a Pass/Merit/Distinction for individual Units, students will gain an overall

We advise students to take Business and Computing in Year 9 before taking Business Studies GCSE. WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? While studying this course you are likely to learn lots of new things. You will be introduced to the world of small businesses and will look at what makes someone a successful business person. You will find out how to develop an idea and spot an opportunity, and turn that into a successful business. You will discover how businesses promote themselves and keep their customers happy. You will also learn how businesses manage both their finances and the people who work for them. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? What will I do on the course?

Citizenship aims to evaluate the world and how it operates, form an opinion about injustices and unfairness, and use your power as a citizen to make decisions and effect change. You will learn about::

Local and global issues that have been in the news and are effecting citizens in a negative way

Research how communities change over time in relation to the key themes of justice, identity and diversity, democracy and rights and responsibilities.

Developing a critical mind to identify and build your own viewpoint thinking about how information can be biased and which sources can be relied upon to provide facts.

Responsible methods of making a change within your community or even in the world such as campaigning, raising awareness or making and signing petitions.

DANCE GCSE WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? This course seeks to provide knowledge skill and understanding of dance and is en excellent introduction to the subject for those wishing to study dance at advanced level. You must: Have an interest in dance performance, choreography and analysis Want to develop your knowledge and skills in dance Want a chance of practical experience Be able to meet deadlines What will I do on the course? Choreography classes will give you the chance to explore your own ideas and provide you with one to one support which will enable you to create your own work. Dance analysis sessions will also help to broaden your understanding of the subject. Basics in safe practice and health and safety for dancers are also covered. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? Assessment is based on coursework and performances and comprises three components. Written paper (20%): The paper is split into two sections which focus on the set work you will study and require you to show understanding of different professional dance works. Practical Examination (20%): You will be required to perform a set study which will last approximately one minute. Coursework (20%): Performance and Choreography: You will be required to perform in one duo/group dance which will last about 2½ to 3 minutes. Choreography (40%) You will also choreograph a dance, which may be a solo or group performance (40%)

DRAMA GCSE (Edexcel)

WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? Expressing yourself in an active and exciting way Working in a group Contributing your ideas and taking on board those of others Exploring issues by putting yourself in other people’s shoes Playing many parts in different imaginary situations Creating your own drama work Looking at plays written by other people WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? You will develop your improvisation and acting skills to a higher level. You will also look at plays in more detail and at different ways of bringing a script to life on stage. There will be more opportunities to explore themes and issues using a range of drama techniques. If you are more interested in the technical aspects of drama (for example set design or lighting) you could focus on these for part of the course. You will learn how drama is created, including all the acting and staging skills that are needed to put a piece of drama on to the stage. You will obtain many skills that are highly valued in any walk of life including teamwork and confidently presenting yourself in public. HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? Two units of work are assessed under controlled conditions by your teacher and include both written and practical elements. You will explore themes ideas and issues, then a full play in a practical way supported by your written documentary response. These two units are marked by your teacher. For the final unit, you will perform a play with a visiting examiner in the audience. There are no written examinations but you will be required to perform in the play, as an actor or contribute a form of design to a production such as costume, lighting or sound.

ENGLISH GCSE (AQA) GCSE English Language GCSE English Literature WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? A desire to enhance written and oral communication skills: for example, to develop the

capacity to write effectively and read with insight Enthusiasm for various types of reading including novels, plays, poems and media texts WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? You will study for a GCSE English Language qualification. This will involve a range of literary texts, including writers like John Steinbeck. You will also study a variety of media texts ranging from moving image to magazines. Vocational Studies BTEC Level 1 Diploma WHAT QUALITIES AND SKILLS DO I NEED? Throughout the course you will develop your practical skills, build your individual confidence and the course will give you a broad introduction to the vocational sector. The programme of study will develop your understanding of the practical skills and, knowledge needed in these working environments. You will also be required to research independently, carry out practical activities and work as part of a team. WHAT WILL I DO ON THE COURSE? This qualification aims to give you the opportunity to experience different vocational areas before entering a full time course. The course gives you the opportunity to experience more than one sector to develop knowledge, understanding and skills of the difference in vocational sectors. You will carry out activities in a vocational context that are engaging in learning and provide opportunities to develop a range of skills and techniques, personal skills and attributes essential for successful performance in working life An example of modules that could be studied are as follows: Communication skills with Children Personal Skills for the Public Services Introduction in to Hair and Beauty Assist with the care of animals Start working in Construction Exploring Digital Photography HOW IS THE COURSE ORGANISED AND ASSESSED? You will complete a number of internally assessed units to achieve the relevant credits for the Level 1 Award. All coursework based – no formal examination. Some units will be verified internally, with others being sent off for external verification.
