Nowadays people are eating really

badly, junk food is very attractive for

children, adolescents and adults,

because it is cheap, fast, delicious

and addictive, yes JUNK FOOD IS

PSYCHOLOGICALLY ADDICTIVE,

its has been proven by experts. They

say that this addiction can

be as strong as drug

addiction. Often people

associate food with

emotions, for example as

little kids our parents gave

us ice creams, cookies,

candy to reward our good

actions or behaviour; so

we associate these kinds

of food with happiness

until we are adults, so we

eat junk food to reward ourselves for being

“good”.

Junk food produces obesity for its poor

nutritional value, pollution (plastic

rubbish), addiction, it shortens your life

expectancy and people expend lots of

money a year on this type of food.

Hello my friend!

You finally reached

the Green Section.

Each month you

will learn

information about

healthy living and

how to take care of

your environment,

enjoy this month’s

edition, peace!

Vegetables v/s Junk food

Page 9: Funkymag

So clearly eating junk food

has more disadvantages than

advantages (if there is one).

To change your eating habits

to healthy ones, start

replacing junk food for

vegetables, these ones

contain many nutrients, fibre,

low amounts of

carbohydrates and fat. They

reduce your risk of heart

diseases, type 2 diabetes,

cancer, obesity and many

other disorders.

Environmentally vegetables do not pollute as much as junk food because in most cases

they do not come with plastic package, they are made naturally and if you grow them in

your garden it is much better, even better is to make a compost with them instead of

throwing them away.

People who have chosen vegetables over junk food say that they have more energy than

ever, they have better sleep, no more diets, no cellulite, etc...

Climate change consequences

Higher temperatures: this means periods of heat waves, which

can be deadly; elderly and sick people are the most vulnerable. For example

the European heat wave caused an estimated of 35.000 deaths. Raising

temperatures also cause asthma and more cases of salmonella poisoning.

Agriculture: the rising temperatures will affect agriculture area specially

in developing countries. It is predicted that by 2020 crop yields are going to fall

by 50 % in Africa.

Stormy weather: most regions may experience more severe storms

causing damage in houses and people.

Infectious disease: mosquitoes which are a disease carrying

vectors will speed up their life cycles because of the warmer and wetter

weather. This will cause an increase in infections and probably will cause

deaths. Also after extreme weather Cholera is common and it is even more

when the sea is warmer.

Sea level rise: the loss of glaciers will rise the sea level, low lying

and coastal regions have particular risk. Some regions might even

disappear.

Algal blooms: these algae are growing very quickly and the worst

part is that some of them are toxic, they consume dissolved oxygen which

causes a “dead zone”.

We all know that climate change

affects the environment, it

causes the loss of glaciers,

destruction of corals, animal

extinction and many more

consequences, but experts do

not talk much about the effect

that this is going to do to people,

maybe that’s why so many are

indifferent about this, because

they that it is something far

away. Well, that’s a wrong

thought, we are being effected

by climate change at this

moment and in the future, if we

don’t help our planet, the

consequences will be

catastrophic.

Page 12: Funkymag

What can we do? First of all get informed about the environment and the climate change, there is lots of

information out there that will help you getting started with helping our planet.

Here are some useful tips:

Recycle bottles, plastic bags, and newspapers. Every

time you do this you send less trash to the landfill and you help save natural resources, like trees and oil.

Bike, Bus, and Walk, you can save energy, do

exercise and pollute less doing this.

Talk to your family and friends, let them

know what you've learned and teach them.

Save electricity, by turning off lights, the

television, and the computer, you reduce you greenhouse gases emition.

Plant Trees, It is a fun and a great way to reduce

greenhouse gases. Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air.

When you buy, buy with conscience, buy

products that don't use as much energy, to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that we put into the air, this will make the Earth a better place.

Page 13: Funkymag

Why go vegetarian?

There are four main answers to this question:

Animals: millions of animals are killed

brutaly every day, and people who raise

them do not even care in giving them a

good life, they have them in an

embarassing conditions. Chickens, cows

and pigs live hacinated in little cages all

their lives, this makes them stressful

because It is not their nature, they are

never going to see daylight, breathe fresh

air or feel the sun over their skins.

They are given many antibiotics

and growth hormones (in pigs

and chickens) and that produces

a low quality flesh for people that

consume It because It is full of

quimics. The end of the suffering

is when they are killed, this is the

worst part, It is a massacre where

they are assassinated with no

compassion, and some are left

alive so they suffer even more

(when the chicken’s throatt is not

fully cut), so turning vegetarian means you’re no longer a part of

the cycle of horrible death.

Going vegetarian is a

change of lifestyle and it

is a good option when It

comes to improve your

relationship with the

environment, It helps you

to reduce your green house

emitions and makes you a

healthier person.

Page 14: Funkymag

Save the planet: The world's 1.5 billion cows and billions of other grazing

animals emit dozens of polluting gases, including lots of methane. Methane is 23 times

more powerful than carbon dioxide and It is a greenhouse gas. Agriculture Organization

says that this gas’ output could increase by 60 percent by 2030. Also imagine the

amount of water needed for billions of pigs, chickens, cows, sheeps, etc...So be a part

of the solution, do not eat meat.

Save others: While 750 million people go to bed hungry every night (and this

number is increasing every year), one-third of the world’s grain is fed to farmed animals. It

takes about 10kg of good quality plant protein - such as wheat and soya - to produce 1kg

of meat protein and 90 per cent of the UK's animal feed protein concentrates come

from poor countries - often those where children die from starvation. A typical

Western meat-based diet can only feed 2.5 billion people: a plant-based diet will feed

every one of us.

Save yourself: Vegetarians live longer and suffer less from diseases such as

hypertension, obesity, coronary artery disease, certain kinds of cancer and diabetes.

Vegetarian diets can even be used to treat illnesses.

Page 15: Funkymag

How to go vegetarian?

The first step is to get informed about vegetarianism, about proteins substitutes (you

could go to a nutricionist), look for

delicious recipes and get information

about the advantajes and disadvantajes of

this change of diet and evaluate if you

really want to become a vegetarian.

The second step is to start eating

vegetarian meals in between the normal

ones so you can begin changing your diet

slowly. Also you can start replacing meat

for tofu or soy meat.

The third step is to start eliminating certain things from your diet little by little,

for example instead of eating for breakfast bread with jam, eat bread with

marmalade or cheese.

The fourth step is to take yourself

seriously; start living in your new diet. By

now you shoudn’t be eating meat and you

should be almost used to the diet. Be

pacient, this is a slow process and It will

give you rewards in the end.

Famous vegetarian people

quotes:

Alec Baldwin: "Every time we sit down to eat, we make a choice.

Please choose vegetarianism. Do it for … animals. Do it for the

environment, and do it for your health."

Casey Affleck: "Imagine living in a cage in the dark, unable to move, day

after day. The suffering of today's American farm animals is almost beyond

belief. They don't have a choice, but you do, and their lives depend on it."

His Holiness the Dalai Lama: "I have been

particularly concerned with the sufferings of chickens for many years.

It was the death of a chicken that finally strengthened my resolve to

become vegetarian. … These days, when I see a row of plucked

chickens hanging in a meat shop, it hurts. I find it unacceptable that

violence is the basis of some of our food habits."

Albert Einstein: "Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet."

CHANGE YOUR DIET. CHANGE THE WORLD

Page 16: Funkymag

During the 1960‟s the hippie movement started to

appear on San Francisco, California. Then spread

throw United States, Canada and also to Europe,

but their greatest influence was in America. The

hippies were young people between 15 and 25

years old, a new generation that was looking of a

change on the way they lived. They often left their

families for many reasons, just because they

thought different from their parents, because they

really wanted to have their own life or just

because they were outcast and was the only way

of fitting in. Most of the hippie people came from

middle class families.

"Do your own thing, wherever you have to do

it and whenever you want. Drop out. Leave

society as you have known it. Leave it utterly.

Blow the mind of every straight person you

can reach. Turn them on, if not to drugs, then

to beauty, love, honesty, fun” This sentence

describes very well hippie way of thinking.

They used to get together on Haight Ashbury district were they organize festivals and

reunions with different topics such as music concerts, LSD experiences or political talks

questioning the authorities. These things really distance the hippies from the rest of the

conservative society, although hippies wanted anew

society were everyone could live in peace and

harmony with each other, despite differences. They

really fought for human rights and also for stopping

gender differences that were very marked those

years.

Hippies were recognized because of their civil right

marches and anti-Vietnam war demonstrations. The

two act were totally pacifist and were only to stop the

problems on the country.

Page 17: Funkymag

Hippies are also highlighted on music, they used it as a way to express themselves and let

their ideas out when they didn‟t know how to say it. There are many musicians that we

know today that were really influential on that time, such us Bob Dylan that has a lot of

songs that express many of the feelings from hippie. Jimmy Hendrix, The Beatles and a lot

of musicians that we have heard at least one time were very popular during the „60‟s.

On 2010 we see few hippies on our daily life. But there are lots of institutions and new

movements that follow the hippies goals and dreams, such as environmental causes,

fighting for civil and human rights, fighting against war and violent acts, as many others.

Hippies had a lot of influences on our

society..

WITHOUT THEM WE WOULDN‟T HAVE

FUNKYMAG! OK, that‟s not SO important,

but, there are so many things to say about

them. Hippies open the mind of the world

and made society realized about many things

that were affecting people and the

environment, things that no one was really

interested.

Hippies also left us an enormous legacy on

music, clothes, ecology and innovation. In

other words, hippies helped society to

express what they thought, to fight for their

needs, they helped people to be themselves

and feel comfortable about it, it didn‟t matter

if someone was different.

Don’t know what to do on your spare time? Well here we

have a lot of ideas for you to hang out with your friends

or enjoy in a healthy way.

Book of the month:

Lord of the Flies, By William Golding

This interesting book is a about a group of boys that

are stuck on a desert island after an airplane accident.

They organized a little society where they have a chief

and everyone has a chore, but this organization

becomes a chaos when two leaders think differently. The boys begin to

know each other and also themselves in this tropical island. You have

to read this amazing book, it may not be a new book, but it really

reflects our society in many aspects. William Golding creates a

symbolic story where the characters and actions perform represent

events in our society, that make us meditate on the way human act on

different situations. After reading the book you will realize how William

Golding could capture such a good image of society and civilization

using just a group of boys lost on an island. The idea of the book is to

read it knowing that William Golding is telling us something with every

event that happens on the book. Put all your attention on Simon and

his words, this boy could really represent the hippie thinking, he was

very spiritual and if he wanted something he fought for it, especially for

saving the group. Another hippie action that we can find in the book is

the way that the boys deal with the idea of living without adults, which

in a way is very similar to hippies, because they wanted to be different

to their parents and follow their own thoughts. That‟s all we can say

about the book, just read it to find out what happens next!
