Fundraising is the foundation of how we do what we do. Without the generous individuals and groups in our community Glaucoma NZ wouldn’t be able to promote awareness and support those with glaucoma.

Ways you can choose to fundraise for glaucoma NZFundraise to support awareness of glaucoma It is estimated that 91,000 people in New Zealand currently have glaucoma. Unfortunately, only 50% of those individuals are actually aware they have the condition. We host public meetings nationally as well as attend invitations to speak at community groups and businesses around the country. We produce a number of glaucoma resources which are made available to the public and health community. All our projects aim to lessen glaucoma’s impact on the New Zealand population. This is achieved through encouraging regular eye exams and stressing the importance of treatment compliance.

Fundraise to support those with glaucoma With the financial support and generous donations from the community, we are able to provide support groups to people afflicted with this disease, enabling them to lead full and healthy lives. Being diagnosed with, or having a loved one affected by glaucoma can be daunting, especially if you have vision loss due to advanced glaucoma, or you need urgent glaucoma surgery. Support groups can provide peer support from people who understand that glaucoma management is a lifelong pursuit. We also service a free 0800 number for people to ring us with questions or concerns.

Fundraise to support research GNZ is pleased to facilitate research into glaucoma in New Zealand. Research is fundamental to any progress in our understanding of glaucoma and how to prevent blindness from it. Research projects cover a wide variety of aspects such as how the eye maintains good health, why the optic nerve is susceptible in different people, how to detect glaucoma early, and the best methods to treat and manage eye disease. All research is directed to a final common goal: to prevent blindness from glaucoma.

2 Aim high – set your sights high but at the same time make sure your fundraising goal is realistic

3 Be passionate – share the reasons why you are doing the fundraising by sharing the aims of GNZ

4 Maximise your funds – make sure your fundraiser will make money and your efforts are worth the outcome. Add extra activities if necessary

5 Timing is everything – think about the best time of the month and year to do a fundraiser and check for potential clashes. Also, make sure you allow plenty of notice for those who may be involved

6 Plan your way to success – get help from friends and family by giving specific tasks to do. Always have a backup plan too, just in case things don’t work out as you hope

7 Be heard – tell others via social networking sites, newsletters etc and consider approaching local media

8 Keep the costs down – keep expenses to a minimum and try to get items or services donated or sponsored

9 Thank, thank and thank again – do let people know how grateful you are for their support and remember to keep them updated on your overall results

10 Keep it safe and legal – this is your fundraiser so Glaucoma NZ is unable to take responsibility. No matter what type of fundraiser you are planning, there will be legal and safety issues that you will need to consider

All fundraising promoted as supporting or benefiting Glaucoma NZ must be conducted in accordance with the following guidelines: • All events and promotions must be

approved by Glaucoma NZ in advance. This is an important safeguard to preserving the integrity of our brand and our commitment to raise the funds needed to fulfil our mission in a cost-efficient and honest manner.

• Glaucoma NZ is available to provide guidance for your fundraiser, but not administrative or event logistics support. You or your organisation is responsible for all details of your event including costs, recruiting volunteers to help out at the event, creating flyers to publicise the event and working the actual event.

• The Glaucoma NZ name can be used while promoting your event but cannot be used as part of the event’s name. This is because it is not a Glaucoma NZ run event - rather an activity to support Glaucoma NZ. Below are some examples of how you can use our name in your promotion: - Proudly supporting Glaucoma NZ

- Silent Auction – 100% of net proceeds to Glaucoma NZ

• All promotional materials, including but not limited to: advertising, letters, brochures, signage, flyers and press releases must be sent to Glaucoma NZ for approval prior to production or distribution.

• All promotional materials must clearly state the share of any funds raised that will benefit Glaucoma NZ, and the basis on which the benefit will be calculated e.g. 100% of revenue/funds received or of profits/proceeds.

• The fundraiser must be promoted in a manner to avoid statements or the appearance that Glaucoma NZ is endorsing any product, firm, organisation, individual or service.

• The fundraiser agrees not to make direct contact with other Glaucoma partners or sponsors for event/activity related assistance, without prior approval in writing by Variety.

• The fundraiser undertakes and agrees that any confidential information disclosed between parties shall be kept strictly confidential and shall not be disclosed to any third party without prior written consent of Glaucoma NZ.

• Organisers are responsible for obtaining all permits, especially those for raffles and/or games of chance.

• Organisers must obtain their own liability insurance to cover the event.

• Glaucoma NZ is not liable for any legal action which may arise as a result of incidents or otherwise arising from the fundraising event.

• Under no circumstances will Glaucoma NZ be responsible for the payment of expenses you or your organisation incur for your event or activity. Under no circumstances may you represent to others that Glaucoma is involved in the organization, or is an underwriter, of your event or activity.

• The Glaucoma NZ name and logo must not be used on any goods you sell or give away as part of your event or activity without prior consent.
