I chose to organise my first walk back in 2016 when my husband Tony was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. Lots of people have supported me along the way including friends, new people, men battling prostate cancer, wives, children and even dogs – it’s been great fun!Sheila McNulty

Your Mountain MarchWith plenty of mountains to choose from, planning your next Mountain March with your friends and family couldn’t be more simple. Now we’re not mountaineers, but we do want to help, so here’s some advice we have learnt along the way from our supporters, which could help you too.

PlanningFirstly, which mountain(s) do you want to climb? It’s important to choose this first to then decide how long it’s going to take you. We have expected time frames for some of the most popular routes below.

We recommend that you complete your Mountain March between May and September, due to the chance of better weather and longer daylight hours, giving you more time to finish it. For more information check out our resources hub at marchformen.org/resources and also check out threepeakschallenge.uk for more details for your mountain challenges.

National Three PeaksFor a real challenge, many people try to complete the National Three peaks within 24 hours from start to finish. However, this can also be completed over three days for those who would like to have more rest.

Many groups start with an overnight stay in Scotland, taking on Ben Nevis first. Depending on how many of you are taking part you may want to hire a minibus to allow enough space for people and kit, as well as a designated driver for the route who isn’t climbing. Please be aware some sections of the routes are steep and unstable, so it’s not recommended to do it at night.

Ben NevisDistance: Approx 8 miles Height: 1345m Time to complete: 8hrs Driving time between peaks: 6.5 hrs

Scafell PikeDistance: 8 miles Height: 978m Time to complete: 4hrs Driving time between peaks: 4.5 hrs

SnowdonDistance: 7-10 miles Height: 1,085m Time to complete: 6 hrs

Yorkshire Three PeaksThis is a 24-mile trek that takes between 8 to 12 hours to complete. You can walk between peaks instead of driving, which means you can complete this challenge in a day!

You may still want to think about overnight accommodation when taking on this challenge.

Welsh Three PeaksTake on the three highest peaks of Wales: in less than 24-hours. Again, with this challenge you need to think about driving time between each peak.

Pen-y-Ghent Distance: 6.6 miles Height: 505m Time to complete: 3 hrs

Whernside Distance: 8.4 miles Height: 525m Time to complete: 4 hrs

Ingleborough Distance: 6 miles Height: 575m Time to complete: 3 hrs

SnowdonDistance: 7-10 miles Height: 1,085m Time to complete: 6 hrs

Cadair IdrisDistance: 6 miles Height: 750m Time to complete: 5 hrs

Pen y FanDistance: 4 miles Height: 886m Time to complete: 2 hrs 30 mins

Your Club MarchSport is always a great way to bring people together, and nothing beats the feeling of marching in and supporting your team – so why not get your biggest fans together and March for Men?

Club fundraising ideasBe a full kit walker – can you gain sponsorship by wearing your club’s full kit to work or on the walk? Even better yet, would you wear your rival’s kit for a day?

Swear jar/pot – when watching your club’s game (We know that could be hard when you disagree with the referee’s decision!)

Get the bets on – who will eat the pickled egg from the bar? We’d pay £2 to see that face!

Go booze free – donate the cost of your pints per game

Donate the name on your tee – Do you trust your friend to choose the name on the back of your favourite sports top? Well they better pay good money for it!

Your Club March checklist Pick your Club(s) – football, cricket, rugby or golf? With so many clubs available, choose your favourite.

Pick your route – are you walking between clubs or maybe even from the pub? You could also coincide it to finish on a match day!

Pick your team – is this a walk with your mates or a solo journey?

Get Fundraising – we recommend setting up a JustGiving page and if there are a few of you we recommend setting up a team page.

Get your kit – order all the materials you need from the form in your pack.

Promote your walk.

Have fun.

Camille RhodesCamille’s husband was only 43 when he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Being a black man, they didn’t know that he would be at higher risk of the disease – one in four black men will get prostate cancer compared to one in eight for all men.

After attending our March for Men in Nottingham, Camille decided to organise her own March in Peterborough. She raised an outstanding £17,000 with 250 people coming together to help fundraise and raise awareness, so that the next generation, like her son, will not have to fear prostate cancer.

Don’t think about it, just do it! Get in touch with Prostate Cancer UK, they are fantastic at helping, they’ll send you a pack and you’ll be amazed at how communities and businesses come together to support you.Camille Rhodes

Your Own MarchIf you’re someone who likes things done your way, then organising your own march, in your own way, is the perfect way to challenge yourself.

Whether you long for the coastal breeze through your hair, walking laps with your dog around your local park, or the ultimate challenge of walking from one end of the country to the other – just choose your date, pick your route and get walking!

Here’s a few more ideas to get you started:• Pub to Pub March – Plan a route between two pubs and end your walk with a well deserved pint? Use pub finder, at prostatecanceruk.org/pubs, to find pubs in your area who are also supporting us and see if you can get more of the locals involved.

• Park March – Circular walks round a local park or open space are a great way to involve the whole community. You can decide how long or short the walk is and can pick a place that’s important to you.

• Challenge March – Whether it is Lands End to John O’Groats, a coast to coast walk or visiting every county in the UK, test your limits by organising your own challenge walk.

• Office March – Work for a big company? Why not walk from one office to another. Or if you walk for a smaller company why not organise a walk to your workplace.

Your Virtual MarchWe know sometimes it can be hard to organise a walk, so our March the Month initiative is the perfect activity to fit to your lifestyle. You can do it on your own, with the family or even challenge your colleagues at work.

The challengeGiven the statistics, we’re scrapping 10,000 steps and instead challenging each person to walk 11,000 steps a day for the month of your choice. Track your steps each day using our individual calendar, or we have a team sheet if you’re competing against others. If you want to increase the distance and set your target higher, it’s totally up to you. We’d love to see how far you can go!

The rules• Each person taking part is encouraged to raise at least £50 for Prostate Cancer UK.

• You can gain your steps by walking, running or even dancing!

• Track your steps digitally via an app on your phone or a pedometer.

• Each individual is responsible for tracking their own steps and must have evidence, if required.

Boosting your sponsorshipTake your sponsorship form into work, and get your colleagues (and boss!) to sponsor you!

There is a way to get a donation without really having to do anything! Just ask your workplace about whether they do matched giving, this is a quick way to boost or even double your total with just one single question.

If you’re organising a walk with other people you could charge them a registration fee to help raise money.

Why not ask local businesses to sponsor you? Many companies are happy to support people in their local areas and they may also provide prizes and refreshments for all those taking part. You could always offer them space to place their logo on your leaflet or t-shirt.

JustGivingSet up a JustGiving page as soon as you start telling people about your march. And studies have found that by donating to your own page first will kick start and encourage more donations.

Remember to ask everyone who joins you to also to get sponsorship for the walk. We recommend you set up a team page on JustGiving and encourage your walkers to join you to easily collect sponsorship.

Check out our resourcesOur resource hub has plenty of guides to help you collect in those pounds. Topics include: • make the most of your online fundraising page • raise your page’s game • hit the headlines • raise £2,000 • set up a sweepstake.
