Visit the exhibit room to obtain information about Museum membership, ways to benefit yourself and the Museum financially, the Roosevelt Medal certificate program, the new Write of Passage book telling the life stories of 100+ Zonian families in the American Era of the Canal, and upcoming museum fundraising trips. The Panama Canal Museum’s first fundraiser cruise involving a Panama Canal transit took place in April, when a group of over 80 cruisers sailed on Celebrity’s Infinity from Fort Lauderdale to San Francisco. Zonian June Riesz coordinated the trip with Arvid Olson and Carlson Wagonlit Travel in Palm Coast, FL. Arvid and Pat Olson, travelers from the Palm Coast area, and a group of Zonians enjoyed the trip immensely - they were as impressed as always with the Canal. Arvid presented a $4,100 donation from Carlson Wagonlit Travel to the Museum representing $100 per cabin. Much to the group’s surprise, the Infinity’s Panama Canal lecturer was Penelope Schwiebert of Utah, who had visited the Museum for a day last year. Penny did a wonderful job and donated several copies of her book on the Canal to the Museum. Below: Carol Mead, Penelope Schwiebert, Kathy Egolf, and Joe Wood at the cocktail party Carlson Wagonlit Travel hosted for our cruisers. Above: Members of Chuck Hummer's Panama Canal Museum Walk to Defeat ALS Team who were on the cruise. Front row: Bobbie Egolf, Mary Vaughn, Bev Wood, Carol Mead. Back row: Bill Egolf, Kathy Egolf, Barbara Dedeaux, Paul Glassburn, Joe Wood, Burt Mead. Some of the cruisers are wearing cruise t-shirts provided by Carlson Wagonlit Travel, and the four shirts being held up front were among those Chuck gave to donors to the Museum's Walk to Defeat ALS Team.

MUSEUM HOURS:

Monday - Saturday 10 AM - 4 PM

Celebrate Christmas early this year with the Panama Canal Museum sponsored land tour to Panama, December 2-8, 2008. This will be a week to remember, filled with adventure. Go snorkeling on the San Blas Island of Kuanidup and visit the Kuna village of Marmadup where you can buy colorful molas on the street. Climb aboard a dug-out canoe for a trip up the Chagres River for lunch at an Embera Indian village, followed by a cool dip at the local waterfall. Explore the ruins of Old Panama on the Pacific side then hop on over to the Atlantic side to see Portobelo and the ruins at Fort San Lorenzo.

In the Anton Valley lies a picturesque village that harbors a crafts market with a diverse offering of flowers, fruits and vegetables, as well as crafts handmade by the villagers themselves. You'll visit the El Chorro Macho Waterfall where you will walk through the tropical rain forest. At the zoo and botanical garden, El Nispero, you'll learn about flora and fauna native to this region. You might even catch a glimpse of a golden frog. Support the Panama Canal Museum by booking your tour at http://www.condoroutfitters.com/leisure_travel/panama_indigenous_tour.shtml.

As Education Curator, Kalika Novoa (left) will be developing the Panama Canal Museum in a Trunk, the Museum’s educational outreach. This position was created thanks to a cultural development grant from the Pinellas Cultural Affairs Department. Before moving to Florida, Kalika worked in Washington, D.C., as an event planner at the United Nations and the White House. Marilyn White (right) is the mother-

in-law of Zonian Sue Kelleher White. Marilyn recently joined the Museum’s clerical staff where she assists with entering memberships, dues, and collection items in the database and with the Museum store. She is replacing Marcy Corrigan, who obtained a full-time position with another company; Marcy plans to continue as a volunteer with the Museum.
