Success Stories

Arts Council England - £500,000 Grant for Tourism ‘Treasure Hunt’ Project Turner Contemporary has been awarded £500,000 for a project aimed at attracting UK and European tourists to the South East. The Arts Council England grant comes from a £3.28 million Cultural Destinations programme the new cultural tourism project. Galleries in the South East will work together with leading artists and tourism businesses to create a unique new cultural ‘treasure hunt’ trail to tempt visitors to the region. The trail combines original new artwork commissions by internationally renowned artists, geocaching GPS technology, new bookable itineraries and an artist-led accommodation offer. Turner Contemporary will lead the project with Visit Kent (Go To Places), which has been awarded £350,000 for the project from the UK Government’s £40 million Discover England Fund, administered by VisitEngland. This is the first time the gallery will commission leading UK and international artists to create artworks across the whole of the South East region, with the aim to attract visitors across the ‘Creative Coast’. Turner Contemporary will work with partners Creative Foundation, De La Warr Pavilion, Jerwood Gallery, Metal, Towner Art Gallery and Whitstable Biennale on the project. Targeted at French and Dutch tourists and UK visitors, the project will create a new digital foot, cycle and train trail through Essex, Kent and East Sussex. Along the route, visitors will be able to find the new original artworks and log treasure containers – ‘geocaches’. They will be able to book experiences in each of the destinations such as tours and artists talks, and the project will trial a new accommodation offer, allowing visitors to visit and stay in artists’ homes and studios. The trail route will include the Thames Estuary, Whitstable, Margate, Folkestone, Hastings, Bexhill and Eastbourne, showcasing dramatic coastal scenery. Turner Contemporary will lead on the delivery of the project’s arts content, including the new artworks, while Visit Kent (Go to Places) will lead on building and marketing the project’s tourism offer. The project has also secured investment from the South East Local Enterprise Partnership (SELEP), East Sussex County Council and Kent County Council.

Information and Guidance

Arts Council England – 2018-22 Budget £39m less per year is available as Arts Council England announces new funding streams and a new name for Grants for the Arts. Arts Council England has been forced to cut its budget for 2018-22 by £156m and completely restructure several funding streams following a collapse in Lottery sales. Whilst the annual £409m earmarked for National Portfolio Organisations (NPOs) remains untouched, the national funder’s plans to spend £212.5m a year on project funding and strategic funds have been re-assessed. Project funding will increase from £87.5m to £97.3m a year, but be broader in scope to permit a wider range of applications. Strategic funding will fall from £125m to £72.2m annually. With £4m a year for contingency funding, this translates into an annual fall of £39m. ACE has also announced name changes for both funds, and a new funding stream of small grants for individual artists (see funding information below for more information). Contact Form

Nesta - Awards for 'Good Help' Nesta are seeking applications from organisations that demonstrate they are helping people transform their lives through 'good help' activities. 'Good help' is core to many organisations trying to help people take action and improve their lives. Yet too many people receive 'bad help' which can have acute consequences, such as homelessness or addiction, but also chronic and subtle effects which make activities, such as parenting and healthy eating, much harder, and sometimes impossible. The Good Help Award will reward an organisation or team that demonstrates they are helping people to find their sense of purpose and develop their confidence to take action to transform their lives, rather than focusing on fixing a problem for them. Nesta will use the award process to identify and celebrate all of the most promising 'good help' projects - not just the winners - and will be looking for opportunities to share best practice and learning in ways that can help them all increase their impact. There are three awards available - one £15,000 winner, and two £5,000 runners up. Any organisation or team from within the public, voluntary, community or social enterprise sectors in the UK are eligible to apply.

Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs - Food Waste Reduction Fund WRAP is now accepting Expressions of Interest for the Food Waste Reduction Fund. This £500,000 fund is provided by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra). The aim of the Fund is to help avoid surplus food produced by food businesses from becoming waste, by enabling Not-for-Profit (NfP) organisations across England to redistribute more of this food to people in need. To be eligible, NfP’s applying will need to demonstrate they plan to work in partnership with food businesses such as retailers, manufacturers, wholesalers, food service and logistics companies. The programme will award grants ranging in value from £20,000 to £75,000 for new projects that can be piloted and evaluated and, if successful, can then be replicated and implemented more widely. EOIs should propose a method of increasing quantities of surplus food redistributed that would otherwise not happen without this funding, for example by involving businesses who are new to redistribution, accessing more food from businesses who already redistribute some surpluses, making increased use of food logistics companies, or tackling a specific barrier. The fund is open to NfP organisations who supply surplus food from food businesses either directly to those in need, or to other organisations who do the same. The application process will operate in two stages: Stage 1 – Expression of Interest: At this stage they require an overview of the project and its potential for impact. E-mail your completed EOI by 30th March 2018. EOIs received by the deadline will be reviewed and shortlisted by an assessment panel. Stage 2 – Full application: NfPs with shortlisted EOIs will be invited to submit their full application during the week commencing 16th April 2018. Those applications received by the deadline of 11th May 2018 that provide the required level of information will be reviewed by the panel on a competitive basis and awarded grant funding until the budget is expended. Successful applicants will be notified during week commencing 28th May 2018. E-mail: [email protected]

Funding is at the discretion of the Trustees. Grants tend to be between £250 and £3,000 with most in the £500 to £1,000 range. Priority is given to applications that focus upon the perfection or promotion of the art in question. Additionally for those applications involving young people the trustees look to a long-lasting connection between them and the art form, one which aims at a significant level of participation and achievement, rather than projects that offer little scope for further involvement. The Trustees meet on a quarterly basis (February, May, August, and November). The annual deadlines for applications are 30th April, 31st July, 31st October and 31st January. The volume of applications is often very high, and the trustees may close the nominal deadline before the end of the quarter. Therefore, applicants are advised not to wait until the end of the quarter before submission, the earlier the application the more considered the first appraisal. Rights, Equality and Citizenship (REC) Work Programme - Action Grants The EU's Rights, Equality and Citizenship (REC) Programme aims to ensure people's rights and freedoms are effective in practice, by making them better known and more consistently applied across the EU. It also promotes the rights of children, and the principles of non-discrimination and gender equality, including projects to combat violence against women and children. Two Action Grant Calls are currently open to applications under the 2018 REC Work Programme:

Improve the Inclusion of Mobile EU Citizens and Their Political and Societal Participation and to Support and Enhance the Democratic Participation of Mobile EU Citizens, Particularly in Underrepresented Groups

The aim is to support Member States' efforts to address challenges arising from intra-EU mobility whilst also promoting and facilitating the effective exercise of the free movement rights by EU citizens and their family members. Project activities should foster the successful inclusion and participation of mobile EU citizens and their family members in the host EU country's civic and/or political life and/or their participation in the democratic life of the EU, particularly with a view to the 2019 European elections.

Action grants will complement but not duplicate the work the Commission is funding in this domain following the publication of the 2017 Citizenship report, and of the work being funded through the European Parliament's pilot projects on e-voting and e-democracy.

Action is needed to support and enhance the democratic participation of mobile EU citizens, particularly underrepresented groups such as women and young people. This complementary call for action grants is to elaborate on the increased focus on the exercise of democratic rights in the run-up to the European elections,
