Functional Skills
For this project you will have two tasks to complete…
Task 2 - LogicSolve a logical problem to work out the nationality of
some athletes. You will also have to work out their sport and what day of the week
they competed
Task 1 - DrawingYou will have to plan and draw an accurate scale drawing of an athletic
sports field.
What do we have on a athletic sport field and what events do we have?(Think of the Olympics).
Task 1 - Drawing
The parts that you will have to include in your sports field are:
Running Track
Discus Area
Javelin Area Long Jump Pit
Triple Jump Pit
Task 1 - Drawing
What areas of maths, and what equipment will we need?
Task 1 - Drawing
You will be given a help sheet like this that tells you the shape of each of the different areas and how big to draw them.
It’s not as easy as it sounds and you will have to think about some bits.
Task 1 - Drawing
To make it fit you will have to use a scale of
1 cm = 5 metres
What does this mean?
To save space, both throwing areas and both jumping areas must be placed inside the running track, but they are not allowed to overlap each other.
Task 1 - Drawing
I suggest that you draw the running track first. Then draw the
other areas on separate paper and glue them in to place.
Once you have drawn it all it needs to be all on one single A3 piece of paper.
Do you want to see mine?...
Task 1 - Drawing
Timmy’s Sports Field
Scale: 1 cm = 5 metres
I’m sure you can do much better!
Maybe with some colour and stuff.
Task 1 - Drawing
Before we go any further I want to make sure you can use your equipment correctly.
Task 1 - Drawing
On the paper on your desk please draw a square witheach side length 20 cm
Task 1 - Drawing
On the end of the square please draw a semi-circle.
Task 1 - Drawing
Measure an angle of 30° from this corner...
Task 1 - Drawing
And make this into an isosceles triangle.
Task 1 - Drawing
Now for Task 2
You will given this sheet:
Task 2 - Logic
For the second task you will have Logic problem sheet.
It has clues written here A logic grid
here
And a solution
table hereUsing the clues you have to work out which athlete did which sport, what nationality they were, and which day they did it on.
Task 2 - Logic
Using the grid you can put ticks and cross in to help you solve the
problem.
You may have to use a clue more than once, and even go back and
reuse clues.
And you will really have to think about it.
Task 2 - Logic
Here is the first one as an example...
Task 2 - Logic
The American athlete competed two days after Prof F, but the day before the athlete who did the Triple Jump. Dame D is French.
Now its your turn. Here is a reminder of your tasks...
