FUNCTION OF CIRCULATION

FUNCTION OF CIRCULATION

CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

- The system that transports blood, nutrients, and waste around the body

CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM

- Heart and blood vessels

FUNCTION OF CIRCULATION

MAJOR FUNCTIONS OF THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

1. Transports gases, nutrients, and waste

2. Regulates internal temperature and transports chemical substance that are vital to health from one part of the body to another

3. Protects against blood loss from injury and against disease-causing microbes or toxic substances introduced in the body

FUNCTION OF CIRCULATION

MAJOR COMPONENTS OF THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

1. HEART: muscular organ continuously pumping blood through the body

2. BLOOD VESSELS: system of hollow tubes through which blood moves

3. BLOOD: fluid that transports nutrients, oxygen, carbon dioxide and other materials throughout the body

FUNCTION OF CIRCULATION

MAJOR COMPONENTS OF THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

TWO TYPES OF CIRCULATORY SYSTEMS

TWO TYPES OF CIRCULATORY SYSTEMS

1. Open circulatory system

2. Closed circulatory system

TWO TYPES OF CIRCULATORY SYSTEMS

1. Open circulatory system

- A transport system in which the blood does NOT stay contained within blood vessels and bathes cells directly- No difference between blood and interstitial fluid- Fluid is called hemolymph

- Circulation is slow thus, open systems are best suited for small body cavities

- Since respiratory and circulatory systems are often separate in small insects, active insects can meet their oxygen requirements despite the slow circulation

TWO TYPES OF CIRCULATORY SYSTEMS

1. Open circulatory system

Ex: Grasshopper

- Grasshoppers have one blood vessel, the AORTA, which carries blood into the body cavity

- Hemolymph moves from one body cavity to the next by muscular contractions

- Blood returns to the heart through small pores called ostia- Nutrients and waste are exchanged between

hemolymph and cells in the heart chambers

TWO TYPES OF CIRCULATORY SYSTEMS

1. Open circulatory system

Ex: Grasshopper

TWO TYPES OF CIRCULATORY SYSTEMS

2. Closed circulatory system

- A transport system in which the blood flows within vessels throughout the entire circuit and does NOT bathe cells directly

- Blood flows in one direction and passes the gas exchange system

- Efficiency of the system depends on composition of blood, path of circulation, and speed of flow

TWO TYPES OF CIRCULATORY SYSTEMS

2. Closed circulatory system

Ex: Earthworm

- Earthworms have 5 aortic arches near that head that act as hearts to pump blood around the body

- Earthworms have two main blood vessels that allow the blood to flow throughout the body
