Last year another record-setting turnout of great cars and car lovers came downtown to enjoy the Function 4 Junction, wth more than 360 cars parked during the Show and at least 800 rolling in the Cruise.It takes a lot of capable hands to pull

together the Function 4 Junction each year. Volunteers control traffic and parking, they operate barricades, help with food service, provide information and register vehicles. They also sell raffle tickets, set everything up on the morning of the Function, judge the Show ‘N Shine entries and clean up downtown afterwards.Many downtown businesses help make

the event possible by providing much-needed goods and services. US Bank, DariMart, Oregon Neurosport Physical

Therapy and the owners of the former Gibson Ford property all donate the use of their parking lots. Bi-Mart also sets aside 38 of their parking spaces for our volunteers.The JC High School equestrian

team helps each year with Cruise and Show registration. The Tiger cheer squad and a local martial arts club each hold their own raffle sales during the Show.Tiger football players and folks from

the Veneta/Elmira 4H club are a big help on the cruise route.Oaklea Middle School fields a team of

volunteers, as do the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, who help us clean the streets and sidewalks.A special thanks goes out to Jeff

Prociw of the Oregon Dept. of Transportation; Jennifer Paugh with the Lane Co. Public Works Dept.; Melissa Bowers, City Administrator of Junction City, and the crew at the JC Public Works Dept. They make sure we are in compliance with all the rules involved in staging an event of this size.Police Chief Mark Chase and his

officers are very supportive to the Function. They keep the event safe for the 10-15,000 folks who spend at least part of their day in Junction City, enjoying what has grown over the past decade into one of the most popular car shows in Oregon.We’ll see you all again this year!

Mike and Tiffany Johnsgard’s 1969 Chevelle definitely stands out at the local car shows. Mike says “it’s not a show-car” and in this case it really doesn’t matter.

The first thing that draws attention to the ‘69 is the black layer of rubber that has coated the back fenders. This comes from melting some huge slicks at the drag strip.

Mike first found the Chevelle at Dan’s Automotive in Springfield, in February of 2004. Since then, the car has gone through nine motor swaps. It started the first month out with a 350, which was swapped for a 396. Then came a nitrous fed 402, and after that a 454. The ninth motor, built by Grant Springer, is a 454 that is on its third season. Mike says this motor is “bulletproof” and couldn’t be happier. The 454 has been bored out and turned into a 468 that is fed by a 1090 cfm Demon carburetor. On the dyno at Garage 808, the Chevelle produced 568 horsepower at the rear wheels!

Many things have been done to this car to withstand the massive power and torque. It has been equipped with a Ford 9-inch rear end that has been narrowed four inches and has a set of 4:11 gears. The transmission is a built up two-speed billet powerglide, a model that is very popular with the drag racers. The driveline was taken out of a five-ton flatbed truck and cut in half to fit under the Chevy. It is very heavy, and adds to the 3,800 lbs. that

this car weighs, but it’s solid enough to handle all the torque without breaking.

For traction Mike had the car fitted with the biggest set of slicks that would go in the fender wells. They are 28x11.5 15’s on a 15x10 rim that provide a full 121/2-inch of contact with the pavement. When he hoods up at the track these tires provide enough grip to pull the front right off the ground. With the help of all this traction the ‘69 has been driven to a best time of 9.94 seconds in the quarter mile.

For safety, the ‘69 has been equipped with a roll bar. It’s also a requirement at the track if you run faster than 11.5. The

car has a full interior, including back seats with seat belts. That way the whole family can cruise including his daughter Kaylee and son Cameron. Mike’s wife Tiffany can also be seen racing the Chevelle. In fact she was the first one to drive it below the 11.5 mark. The car didn’t have a roll bar that day, and the track officials wouldn’t let them run anymore. Just that one quick pass, and back to the trailer.

Unlike some of the cars at the shows, this Chevelle gets driven often. For general cruising Mike can get away with

using pump gas. At the track he uses race fuel that costs more than twice as much as the supreme you can buy at the local station. It can be in the ball park of seven dollars a gallon. A neat fact is that the Chevelle can use almost an entire gallon just doing the tire warming burnout and quarter mile pass.

“It’s an old school classic,” Mike says. “I was raised in these. People respect these cars and love ‘em. I bought the ‘69 to use it, drive it, and love it.”

If you want to see this guy in action just go to this years’ Pinks, Armdrop Racing event, in Woodburn. It’s a two-day event with a $10,000 prize. You can also look on You Tube under Johnsgard and see a few clips of him racing. He will also be at a three-day event in The Dalles. It starts with a show & cruise the first day, and ends up with drag racing at the local airport runway. Last year Mike was the “fastest car at the track” and is a local favorite.racing at “Pinks” armdrop style

The Function 4 Junction is a non-profit organization that is run entirely by volunteers, although many of them

bring professional skills to the tasks they perform. That spirit of volunteerism connected to the Function starts at the top with the F4J Board of Directors.All ten directors devote

many hours of their time and energy all year long. Their wide array of experience and their amazing dedication make the Show ‘N Shine smooth and the Cruise safe for car owners, for spectators who come long distances to see great cars up close, and for the wonderfully supportive residents of Junction City.Over the years, the Function board of directors have also

made donations to the JC Tiger Auction, the Tri-County Chamber of Commerce, Viking Sal Senior Center, Bethel Booster Club and local Boy Scout and Girl Scout programs. Every year they allocate enough funds to provide a college scholarship to one or two high school studentsThe board lost three valuable members during the past

year. Lynda Phelps, who also handled all of the advertising sales duties for the F4J magazine, resigned from all duties last fall. Lynda had been a board director since 2003, and

The annual Function 4 Junction events are free for spectators, but

funds are raised through entry fees paid by car owners who want to enter their autos in the Show ‘N Shine, and from drivers who pay Cruise registration fees. Since 2005, a large portion of those fund-raising efforts have gone to support the college scholarship program administered by the Education Together Foundation.Every year an amount ranging

between $1,500-$2,000 is awarded to one or two high school students who live within the Junction City School District. The number of scholarships awarded and their amounts are dependent on the funds raised each year and also on the number of eligible applicants.The Function 4 Junction

Scholarship program, like all of the 65 scholarships awarded by Education Together’s scholarship committee, require high grade-point averages, a written personal essay and a summary of individual future goals.The Education Together Foundation

was founded in 1987 in Junction City with a mission of providing additional funds to local area schools. The group administers scholarships, distributes endowments and awards grants in order to achieve those goals, and to support students at all grade levels.Two Education Together board

members oversee a selection committee

made up of four representatives from the Junction City community. This arrangement ensures that all board members remain separate from decisions made by the selection committee.Although it’s not a requirement, the

Function’s scholarship gives special consideration to applicants interested in pursing a career in automotive-related industries.In 2013, the committee chose to grant

the Function 4 Junction Scholarship in the amount of $2,000 to Ethan Mills, who used the award to enroll at Oregon State University last fall.Gary Nelson, president of

Education Together, said that a personal essay is the most crucial element in determining scholarship winners because it gives the best insight into the character of each individual and what they hope to accomplish.“In the past two years we’ve

widened our parameters,” said Nelson. “We now have money for district residents who aren’t going to college but need grants to continue their adult education or attend

vocational school.“I can say, however, that we wouldn’t

exist at all if it weren’t for individuals and groups like the Function 4 Junction who provide the scholarship money that funds our awards.”The 2013 scholarship winners were

announced on May 21 at the Education Together Awards Night held in the Junction City First Baptist Church at 29009 W. 18th Ave. The 2014 ceremony will be held at the same location on Tuesday, May 20.

From its casual beginnings in 1995, the Function 4 Junction has been a celebration of the history of American automobiles

that extends back more than a century. It also serves as a showcase for the craft of auto restoration and an expression of the passion that many people feel towards their favorite make and model of classic car.But mostly it’s a chance to have fun while taking in the scene,

talking about cars and in the process, doing good things for the community. Since 2006, both the Show ’N Shine and the Cruise have been held within the Junction City limits, using the main drag of our small Willamette Valley town as a cruise route. The Show ‘N Shine has moved from the often-muddy high school football field to the paved streets at the center of town.Between 10,000 and 15,000 people show up every year to enjoy

the day, watch the cruisers and inspect the show cars. It’s the second largest event held in Junction City (behind the four-day Scandinavian Festival) and it’s grown into one of the most popular car shows in Oregon.A volunteer board of directors now manages the non-profit

organization that stages the events and continues the mission of offering scholarships and grants, which are made possible through registration fees, shirt and poster sales along with other fund-raising efforts.Spectators line both sides of Ivy Street – the city’s name for the

four lanes of Hwy 99 that run through the center of town. The Cruise traditionally begins at 6pm with two vintage fire trucks leading the way. Automobiles of every make, model and vintage cruise up and down the main drag until darkness falls and the Cruise officially ends.The Show is held all day long, centered at the corner of 6th

Avenue and Greenwood Street. Awards are announced and presented around 3pm, and then everyone gets ready for the main event – the Cruise!With the support of thousands of classic and custom automobile

fans, many local businesses, area service groups and volunteers – and hundreds of cruisers from near and far – the 2014 Function 4 Junction promises to be another memorable day!

Only a few models of American-made automobiles have achieved

iconic status among car enthusiasts. The Ford Mustang is perhaps the best known among those, but the Chevy Bel Air might be the next-most recognizable body style on the road – and certainly one of the most loved.For the second time in three years, a

Bel Air won the Best of Show award at the Function 4 Junction. In 2013, it was Roy and Darlene Gaskey of Sweet Home who impressed the judges with their beautifully restored custom 1956 Chevy Bel Air 2-Door Hardtop.Roy and Darlene are Sweet Home High School sweethearts

who’ve been together since 1963. He was a senior and she was a freshman when they first met; her brother was Roy’s best friend. They married in 1968 and aside from a few years when they moved because of Roy’s job with a utility company, these two sweethearts have lived in Sweet Home most of their lives.

The leather interior was put together by Jim Valenzuela of V34 Custom Interiors. The console is Roy’s own design, featuring a Sony DVD player with Rockford Fosgate speakers. The dash has Dakota digital gauges. the Fury steering wheel is by Billet Specialties, and Roy added power windows into his design.

Roy drove a new ‘66 Chevelle during those early years of their five decades together, but it wasn’t his dream car.“Most of the guys wanted a ‘55, ‘56 or ‘57 Bel Air in

those days, but I was kind of a poor boy and couldn’t afford one at the time,” Roy said. “My first project restoring a Bel Air didn’t happen until 2005 when I bought a ‘56 2-door post hot rod.“I had been looking for the right car for about ten years. I

found it on our way home from another show. It had a 496 motor and a 5-speed transmission; I restored that car and sold it a few years later.”

That started a Bel Air restoration trend in the Gaskey household, as Roy bought two other models between 2009 and 2011, fixed them up and sold them. The car they have now may not be their last automobile project, but it’s might be the last one that Roy will work on personally.“We bought this car in August of 2011

for $15,000 from a guy in Tigard. It had been sitting in the owner’s garage for 25 years, and was about to be restored. The engine and transmission were out but the owner wasn’t going to be able to finish it. We hauled it home and I took it completely apart – every nut and bolt.”Roy soon realized that it would take

several years to build the custom car he had in mind, plus a lot of work that he normally would do himself but might not be able to do any longer.“We sent the car down to MetalWorks Classic Auto

Restoration in Eugene,” Roy said. “They listened to our

Almost as clean under the hood as it is everywhere else, the Bel Air runs on a 430hp LS3 GM 6.2L performance engine that displaces 376 cubic inches. The 4-speed automatic transmission, like the engine, was designed for a 2010 Corvette.The rear of the car is just as recognizable as the front, while

the trunk space was designed with enough room to hide a a few of your friends on those night when you cruised into a drive-in movie.

on the front end, then added Electric Life power windows. He wanted air conditioning but didn’t want hoses crowding the engine compartment, so he hid them behind the inner fender.To keep everything clean Roy added

a new firewall in the compartment and moved the battery into a storage space in the back wall of the spacious and upholstered trunk.It rolls on Billet Specialties wheels –

19x8 up front and 20x10 on the back –with Wilwood disc brakes, while an oversized Ron Davis radiater keeps everything running cool and smooth under the hood.The Gaskeys drive the Bel Air to local

shows, but they’ve only put about a thousand miles on it since the build was finished in July of 2012. They trailer it to more distant shows where it’s already won nearly a dozen major awards – including, of course, the coveted Function 4 Junction People’s Choice Award.

After Dick Thornley of Roseburg finished building the custom car he always wanted, he built a trailer to match it. That combination won over the crowd at the 2013 Function 4 Junction Show ‘N Shine as they voted to give Dick the coveted People’s Choice Award...

Some classic cars live inside a garage and ride on a trailer to car

shows. Dick and Joyce Thornley prefer

to drive their 1936 Ford Deluxe 4-door Humpback Sedan from their home in Roseburg to the numerous shows they attend all over the Northwest every

year.“I enter the Graffitti Weekend shows,

of course,” Dick said. “We take it up to Junction City every year, plus at least a half-dozen different shows around the state each year. We drive it to every one of those events.”After the 2013 Function 4 Junction

Show’N Shine, Dick and Joyce found themselves driving home with the highly desirable People’s Choice Award. That plaque went on 40-foot wall that displays more than 100 awards and trophies Dick has won over the years.It’s easy to see why the ‘36 was such

cars on display last year. Elegant body lines, suicide doors, a custom trailer and numerous custom features make it an impressive vehicle, but it’s the distinctive front end that really stands out. It almost has a human face, with headlight eyes and a bumper that resembles a lower lip. The effect makes it seem as if the car might speak at any moment.The Thornleys found the ‘36 in 2004. The engine was blown and the

transmission was shot. Working with parts he obtained mostly from Bob Drake Ford Parts in Grants Pass, Dick rebuilt a Mustang 2.8L V6 engine and installed it, then connected the motor to a new automatic transmission and differential assembly.

“I changd the rear end from a 4-bolt to a 5-bolt in order to get decent wheels on it,” Dick said. “It also has a new Mustang front and rear suspension system. All the running gear is from a Mustang.”Electric windows were added next,

along with air conditioning, a sun roof, new Crager wheels and Goodrich raised-letter tires, power disc brakes, dual exhaust and a custom woodgrain steering wheel. Dick wanted to add electric power steering, so he used a

pump from a Subaru to feed a Mustang power steering assembly.The interior is completely new with

decorative touches such as elegant flower vases in the rear seating area.“I want to give special thanks to Dayton

Kolb for his work on the interior, and to Don Robertson of Don’s Powder Coating in Roseburg for his mechanical work and the powder coating,” Dick said.“I painted it myself and chose a nice

grey for the body, then kept mixing a darker shade until I got a color I liked for the fenders,” Dick said. “The accent color is a kind of cobalt blue.”

The front end and bumpers are highly stylized but fully stock. When necessary, Dick can bolt on a 3-foot extension pipe that holds a hitch for a custom trailer he fashioned himself.“The trailer was

made by cutting the center out of a Pontic Fiero. I took the rear tailight assembly and attached it to the front end, then built a new lid

that opens like a trunk from the rear. It sits on the original Pontiac wheels and suspension. We use it to haul our chairs and an ice chest and whatever else we need when we go to a show.”“I completed the ‘36 in 2008, but I still

consider it a project car, because you’re never really finished working on a car like this.”At the age of 84, Dick is down to just

two cars from the five or six projects he usually was working on at any given time, but the two he has left are both unique automobiles. In addition to the ‘36, Dick is the proud

owner of a custom-built 1969 Chevelle Yenko SC. Only 99 cars were made originally, and only 35 are known to exist today. If all goes well, Dick hopes to bring his Chevelle to the Function in 2014 for everyone to see.

black with six coats of clear that give it a mirror finish. The Cobra sits low to the ground and looks fast even when it’s just parked at the curb. The lines flow with a distinctive European racing style that instantly appeals to just about everyone who sees it.“I bought the kit and put it together

with a lot of guidance from the guys at SoFast Racing in Albany,” Rick said. “It turned out to be quite a task – just the wiring alone was a big challenge.”Fortunately, Rick has the experience

that comes from a lifetime of tinkering with cars. As a young man he worked alongside his father at Kendall Ford, learning the skills of a mechanic and car builder at a young age.“My Dad taught me how

to mold fiberglass and do body work, which came in handy when I was

working on dune buggies,” Rick said. “I learned to paint when I was younger by restoring bicycles, but I didn’t paint the Cobra myself. That work was done by a fellow named Gary Correa.”His first restoration project was his first vehicle, a 1953 Ford

pickup that was being used to haul field pipe. Rick worked all summer to pay for the truck, restored it to good condition and drove it to his senior prom. The night almost took a tragic turn after the dance when another driver broadsided

the truck and caused considerable damage. Fortunately, nobody was seriously injured in the crash.

The truck was nearly totaled, but Rick decided to rebuild it instead

of scrapping it. That rebuild turned into a full restoration project until he eventually got the Ford into show condition.

He still has that truck today, along with the third car he ever

owned – a 1965 Mustang Fastback.Rick bought the Mustang for $200 in 1976 from a woman

in Springfield. It had been stolen and stripped; it was just a few hours before police recovered the vehicle, but there wasn’t much left except the body and frame. In that condition the owner was quick to let it go, but it took Rick quite a while to complete a full restoration.The Cobra might not be Rick’s last project, but it’s clearly

his personal car. Every component is the result a decision Rick made, from the Mustang Cobra wheels with Goodyear Eagle racing tires, and inside to the carbon fiber front console and interior door panels that he hand-crafted, then onto the hood where he built a fiberglass scoop that looks as

if it belongs on a Corvette. Even the gauges are customized with “eyebrows” – small shade hoods from an old Impala that Rick shaved and shaped by hand.Starting with the body kit, Rick installed a 351 Windsor motor

that gives him 400 horses to push the 5-speed T5 transmission. The rear end and suspension came from a ‘97 Mustang, with 4-into-1 custom-shaped side exhaust pipes that add some extra flair to the car’s unique profile.

“My wife and my daughter love riding in it,” Rick said. “It’s really been a fun car to have around and be able to take it out for a cruise. It certainly does get noticed when we take it to a

show, but people also flash a lot of ‘thumbs-up’ and shout out compliments when we‘re just out driving around.”“I chose the Cobra because it’s such a unique car in itself,”

said F4J president Dan Alley. “With that deep black color and all the handcrafted work that went into the car, it was an easy choice. I believe it’s the only one we’ve ever had in our show.”Folks may get a chance this year to take a close lok at the

Cobrs, as Rick will probably bring it back to the Show ‘N Shine once again. They won’t have any trouble spotting the Cobra –it’s one car that will always stand out in a lineup.

been changed on the Challenger over the years is new paint in 1992 and an engine rebuild by Hamburger’s Performance in the early ‘90’s. That’s also about the only work Steve didn’t do by himself.“I added the six-pack soon after that, plus a lot of chrome work,”

Steve said. “ I did get rid of the stock wheels and tires, replacing those with Crager Formula 1 Superstocks.“It’s not a daily driver, I have a Jeep

Cherokee for that, but it’s not a trailer queen, either. It had 30,000 miles on it when I bought it for $2,100. It has 80,00 miles now – and it’s worth more, too.”

Steve’s car wasn’t brand-new when he bought it on a co-signed loan from the old Bob Cochran dealership in Glenwood for $2,100 – less than half the showroom price of $5,000 – but to document the history of the car he had this reproduction made of the original window sticker.

A few of those miles were racked up while cruising Willamette St. in Eugene and running street races at night down around 30th St. many years ago, Other miles are added each year driving to car shows all over Oregon, and Steve has a garage full of more than a hundred trophies for winning awards like Best of Show, Best MOPAR, Best Muscle Car or Best Engine at most of those shows.“It makes all that knuckle-busting work

worthwhile,” said Steve.His devotion to original equipment goes right down

to the license plates. Steve exchanged the original plates when he renewed his registration sometime in the ‘80’s, but later regretted that decision. Years later he found an old scrap van at a rural fire station with the correct style of plates; he was able to buy them and register them to the Challenger to complete that authentic ‘70’s look.“The debut of the Dodge Challenger and the re-designed Plymouth “Cuda” in

1970 brought an additional element to the muscle car era,” said F4J Editor Scott McKinley. “I feel that the Dodge Challenger has earned its place in automotive history, and this one definitely has its place with the Makinson family.“It was an honor to have Steve and Sharon Makinson and their 1970 Dodge

Challenger as the 2013 F4J Editor’s Choice Award winner.”

The Ford Mustang is probably the most distinctive and

iconic American automobile designed during the past fifty years. The body lines, profile and styling of the first decade of models are instantly recognizable by car enthusiasts everywhere.The original Mustang first

arrived on the market on April 17, 1964. It came with a reasonable price tag of $2,368, and dealers were swamped with requests for the new and uniquely stylish vehicle.

Ford Motor Co. had expected annual sales would be somewhere around 100,000 cars, but dealers across the nation took 22,000 orders for the Mustang on that very first day. Just one month later, a Mustang served as the pace car for the 1964 Indianapolis 500.In its first year, sales reached 417,000 cars.

Within two years Ford had sold over one million Mustangs and the car was firmly established as a new American icon.Don Frey, who was Product Planning

Manager for the original Mustang, believes that the car had such dramatic appeal because the styling was very unusual for its time.

Steve McQueen helped catapult the Mustang into classic car status when he drove this 1968 GT390 in the iconic movie “Bullitt”.

“The design was very European, particularly the front end,” Frey said. “There was no other car like it in North America at that time.”With three body styles to choose from – convertible,

hardtop or fastback – along with the biggest list of options Ford had ever offered on a vehicle, each owner could customize their Mustang to suit their particular tastes.The car was a hot, fast set of wheels from the very

beginning, and it was accessible to almost anyone. In 1966, any licensed driver over the age of 25 could walk onto a Hertz Car Rental lot, join the Hertz Sports Car Club, take a basic driving test and then rent the car of their dreams – a new Mustang GT 350H with a 289 V8 under the hood. Because the car could generate 306hp, many of those rentals ended up being raced at a local drag strip where the driver could take home a trophy before returning the car to the rental yard.One of the original print ads featured the

catchphrase, “Mustang was designed to be designed by you.” That’s certainly how Mustang owners felt, as nearly everyone did some modifications and they all believed that no one else had a vehicle like theirs. That may be part of the reason why the Mustang had such universal appeal and remains wildly popular with enthusiasts everywhere.

Legendary race car builder Carroll Shelby was drawn into the Mustang circle in 1965 when Ford asked him to design a model based on his famous Cobra racing machine. For the next five years, Shelby’s company produced models like the GT500, which used the Cobra emblem and featured a high-riser intake manifold. With the right driver behind the wheel, a Shelby-built Mustang was capable of reaching speeds of 200mph.In 1970, no Shelby GT 350 or 500 models were

actually produced, but 789 of those models that weren’t sold in 1969 were given 1970 vehicle identification numbers under FBI supervision. Although American production ceased, Shelby did build 14 Mustang-based models in 1971-72 which were marketed as the “Shelby Europa” and sold only in Europe.During an interview in 2000, Shelby said that his

work on redesigning what he called a “secretary’s

car” turned out to be “...the hardest thing I ever did in my life.”In 2007, Ford revived the Shelby name

and uses it today for their high-performance version of the modern Mustang. Shelby’s final collaboration with Ford came in 2012 with the release of a street-legal racing version.

Clara Faye Anderson is one of the owners of Anderson Erosion Control in Junction City, where she was born 86 years ago. She sold a T-Bird to buy this 1968 Mustang convertible in 1995 and bring it home from Portland.In her own words:“It’s painted Acapulco Blue with pink

detailing and a parchment interior, and it’s mostly original – just some motor detailing, and the wheels have been changed. It has a 302 engine with an automatic transmission, and I maintain it myself.“It’s a lot of fun to drive, and I took

it to seven or eight shows last year. I never miss the Function 4 Junction.”

Michelle Hash is another past F4J class winner, taking home the 1970’s Modified Award last year for her ‘70 Boss Mustang clone, shown on the right in the photo above. She found the car in 2001 and her husband Craig built it up into its current condition. It’s powered by a 351 Cleveland stroked and bored to a 408 that gives Michelle 525 horses under the hood. It has a C6 transmission, 9-inch Walker custom wheels that are hand-

cut, a custom interior and metallic blue bronze paint with a cool silver stripe.Michelle and Craig also own a 2011 GT

5.0 with a Coyote all-aluminum motor and twin overhead cams that produce 555hp. It’s painted a metallic Kona Blue with silver pearl over white stripes. Craig is the builder of the well-known and fantastically painted “HellCamino” that always draws a crowd of onlookers whenever he shows it.

In 1975, V-8 power returned to the Mustang. The 302 V-8 engine produced a mere 130 horsepower, however, and came only with automatic transmission. An economy option called the “MPG” Stallion was also available.The Cobra II package joined the lineup in 1976, offering a

non-functional hood scoop and racing stripes, as well as front and rear spoilers. Available in three stock color schemes – white with blue stripes, blue with white stripes, and black with gold stripes – the Cobra II was designed to be reminiscent of the famed Shelby Mustangs.

In 1984, a special V-8 powered Mustang GT was created to commemorate Mustang’s 20th anniversary. It was a limited edition done up in Oxford White with a Canyon Red interior.While the Mustang legacy continued to burn bright from

the early to mid-80s, Ford’s product development team was looking for alternatives to the popular Fox-body introduced in 1979. By 1987, it was again time for Mustang to evolve with the changing market. Designers gave the Fox-body a facelift with new “aero-look” design and a 5.0-liter V-8 with 225 horsepower.

In 1993, Ford’s new Special Vehicle Team (SVT) introduced the limited-production SVT Mustang Cobra, which sported subtle yet distinctive styling cues and performance upgrades. The low-volume 1993 Cobra R, developed to be driven as a race car, sold out prior to production.

Corrie Lucas of Cheshire traded a Jeep Wrangler in order to acquire this 1968 Mustang Coupe from an owner in Vancouver. He’s modified it by adding a 302 engine with Edelbrock carbs and intake manifolds, and replacing the stock automatic with a T5 five-speed transmission.

It’s almost all stock with matching serial numbers and still sports its original interior. The engine is the classic straight six linked to a 289 three-speed manual transmission. The 1994 model year marked the beginning of the fourth generation of Mustangs. Enthusiasts were ready for an all-new look and feel - and Ford designers were anxious to give customers exactly what they wanted.“It was a do-or-die situation for

Mustang at the time,” recalled William Boddie, then Ford’s program manager

for small- and mid-size cars. “A lot of people at Ford thought we wouldn’t make enough money with the Mustang, and they thought we ought to kill it. This was going to be our chance to prove them wrong.” The galloping pony emblem returned to

the front grille after a 16-year absence, and the Mustang now had a shapely, rounded body available as a two-door fastback coupe or a convertible – the first purpose-built convertible in two

decades (as opposed to a conversion of a hardtop car) – and its 5L V-8 engine produced 215 horsepower. The design was reminiscent of vintage pony cars.“It was an immediate hit,” said Boddie.

“The demand was greater than our supply.” The 2013 Mustang offers a 5.0 liter

V6 engine and continues to build on excellence by delivering a new exterior design, updated technology and new driver tools.“It takes the greatness of the 5.0-liter

and V6 and pushes refinement to the next level,” said D. Pericak, Mustang chief engineer.

The 2013 Ford Mustang V6 rear has been updated with a high-gloss black panel connecting the taillamps while keeping the sequential turn signal Mustang is known for. The rocker panels running along the car are now body-color, providing a more premium appearance. The front end sports an aggressive design with a prominent grille and a more powerful splitter. For a small town barely making so much as a blip on the map,

Brownsville (pop. 1,600) boasts more activities and events than most towns ten times its size. One of the perennial favorites is the Classic Car Cruise held in August in historic Pioneer Park along the beautiful Calapooia River.Along with the car show is the Antique

Faire and a Chicken Swap (yes, you read it right). Visitors can shop for vintage and collectible finds, admire vintage cars, trucks and tractors from

around Oregon, and buy chickens – all at the same location, on the same day.Held the first Saturday of August,

the car show has been in its present location for three years. The show’s former location on Spaulding Ave. was in conjunction with “Stand by Me” Day, which was held this year on July 23.A mother/daughter team, Carine San

Martin Jeffery and Carlene San Martin are the driving forces behind the show. Both women have a personal interest in cars of all kinds, especially vintage automobiles.

”I grew up with a car enthusiast dad,” said Jeffery. “Some of these cars are like the cars I used to drive.” Last year’s event hosted 17 categories.

Jeffery said that this year will be totally different, boasting many more events including first and second place for the best pre- and post-50s and 60s, and best project.“My favorite part is having it in the

park,” said Jeffrey. “I really like that venue because of the shady setting.”More than 50 entries came from as far

away as Salem, Dallas and McMinnville,

as well as many from closer to home. “We drew a pretty good crowd,” said

Jeffrey. “I had some people tell me they liked the venue better than Coburg’s.”She said entrants as well as visitors

liked the diversity with the antique show, chicken swap and show, music and food vendors. “These cars are worth showing off,” said Jeffrey referring

to the some of the vintage models and one of the original cars used in the 1986 movie, “Stand By Me.” One of the more unique entries was a red 1942 Ford Fire

Truck retired from Fairview Hospital and Training Center in Salem and “adopted” by Halsey resident, Skip Smith, who is the fire chief for both Halsey and Shedd.

A 1927 Rat Rod. Dubbed “Heinz 57” by owner and builder John Sparks, this roadster was the affordable choice for many men after WWII.

This 1955 Chevy was used in the movie “Stand by Me.” Wes Meckle of Brownsville is the car’s third owner since the movie was filmed more than 25 years ago.“I bought it a little over a year ago from a guy in the River Road area of Eugene,

“I put in a new rear end, cleaned it up and I can keep it,” said Smith. “But when I want to get rid of it, it goes to the fire museum (in Salem near Brooks).”Another unusual entry was

John Sparks’ 1927 Rat Rod which boasts Chevy running gear and a Whirlpool wash machine lip up front. “I got a little bit of everything,” said Sparks. “It’s a Heinz 57. I built

it in my garage, the first one I ever built. It’s also street legal and goes down the freeway real nice.”Peggy and Al Wilson of Elmira entered their 1929 Ford “A” Roadster. Al

started building it in the winter of 1999.“All we had was the front seat, but I could drive it,” said Al. “We tore it

all down and took off the fuel injector and everything else off it. We put on an Edelbrock intake manifold, a four-barrel carburetor and headers, then chromed out everything. It jumps.”The couple drives their roadster all the time. They’ve taken it to Laguna

Beach and scored a trophy for “Best Shine.” Jean and Bill Kughn of Monroe entered a 1964 Chevy with a 427 big block

with a 6-71 blower built by Redline. It includes dual quads, Merline square heads and Ross custom blower pistons estimated to produce 860 horsepower. The 2014 Brownsville

Roseburg rolls out a big welcome...

Graffiti Weekend in Roseburg might not be on your bucket list of interesting things to do, but you really should consider adding it. Graffiti Weekend is actually a

five-day motorhead Mecca that offers something for everyone, whether you’re young, old, a classic car enthusiast, or anyone looking for some family-style fun.Events start each year on Wednesday with Sherm’s Kick-Off and come to an end on

Sunday with the Weeks-End Fun Run, along with a huge BBQ and outdoor concert at Seven Feathers Casino Resort, where winning automobiles from the Weekend’s three

different competitive shows are displayed.Organizers pack the

full five days with a wide variety of things to do. The largest and most attended events are the Show ‘N Shine held at River Forks Park and the Shop ‘N Shine held downtown. Both events have big turnouts of restored classic and custom automobiles.

Club of Roseburg sponsors the River Forks Show ‘N Shine. It’s free to attend, but the club also uses the event as an opportunity to collect donations of canned food for the Umpqua Community Action Network. The Downtown Shop ‘N Shine

isn’t quite as big as the main event due to a lack of parking space, but it still draws a nice turnout of vintage vehicles. About 150 cars line the streets of downtown Roseburg, which allows the guys to look at cars and talk about cars while the ladies cruise through the stores – although nowadays, it’s often the other way around.

The River Forks Show ‘N Shine was just expanded from 500 cars to 600 entries this year to accommodate the dozens of cars turned away in past years. It’s a beautifully picturesque venue for a car show, located right on the banks of the North Umpqua and on the park lawns. With plenty of food venders and acres of beautifully restored cars to view, it’s a fantastic event.There are two cruises held during

With the unique architecture of old brick buildings from the late 1800’s to early 1900’s as a backdrop, the Downtown Roseburg district is the perfect setting to display restored antique autos or custom classic cars.The downtown show is sponsored

by the Cascade Historical Motor Club & Umpqua Flatheads. It was worth going last year just to see a beautifully restored 1937 Hudson pickup, but every car in the lineup was worthy of a close and appreciative look.Roseburg isn’t often thought of by

most folks as a vacation destination,

but if you have time in early July it’s worth going for the week and experiencing all of the events. If it isn’t the biggest overall car show in Oregon, it has to be in the top two or three. It’s an affordable vacation, too, because most of the events don’t have an entry fee, thanks to many local businesses

and sponsors who generously donate cash and prizes.The organizers use Graffiti Weekend to

benefit Community Cancer Center, Job’s Daughters, Special Olympics, Lions

Club, UCAN, Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, the FISH of Roseburg, Red Cross, the Diabetes Fund, the Heart Association, Respite Care and Order of Amaranth #18.The 2014 Graffiti Weekend in Roseburg

The Corridor Car Show and Carnival is an annual fundraiser to support Corridor Alternative Elementary School, located on Silver Lane off

of River Road in Eugene. Corridor is a magnet alternative school, with students drawn by lottery from across Eugene’s 4-J school district.It’s a unique school in that it has an emphasis on choice, with students

selecting short-term enrichment classes in many areas of study. These classes are in addition to traditional course offerings and rotate every three weeks. The enrichment electives focus primarily on arts, science and technology with opportunities for field trips.Corridor also encourages a sense of community by including multi-grade

hands-on projects and a high level of parent involvement. The annual car show and carnival demonstrate those values and provides needed funding for field trips, technology and other classroom materials.The show began in 2010 as the brainchild of Corridor parent John

Wise. Together with his wife Sheila and their close friends Mark and Kim McBee, they approached the Corridor Parent-Teacher Organization with the idea, which quickly became the school’s main fundraiser. John and Mark have attended many car

shows together through the 20 years they have known each other, so it was natural for them to think of a car show as a fundraiser.

John asked his wife what the ladies might like at the event, and she came up with the idea of a raffle that

later grew into the silent auction.They wanted to include everyone and make it a family

event, so next they added an old-style carnival for the kids. Then, with the teachers in mind, they opted to have them select winning cars for each of their classes. Sponsors also pick winners, so there are many prizes awarded. The show features cars of all eras, makes and models, with

many classic, antique and collector vehicles on display. Last year 135 cars entered the show.“We’ve had some really rare cars over the years,” Mark said.As a special recognition, the fifth-graders and the principal

were custom powder-coated red and blue X-blade fans, rotors cut in half and a special 7-blade fan from the principal. For a $150 donation, sponsors get to put their names on the awards and select a car they like. The awards are designed to be wall art for display in the winner’s garage. “Car enthusiasts enjoy the awards to show off to their friends, and we

have had some super nice cars in the show,” Mark said.Entertainment by student groups is provided every half hour

throughout the day. Students sing, dance and offer other performances, such as demonstrations put on by the school’s juggling team. Corridor performance arts students are well-known for the plays they put on at the Hult Center each year.At the Carnival there are tasty treats such as kettle corn, cotton candy,

snow cones, hot dogs and root beer floats to snack on while joining in the activities. Tickets are sold for all of the booths, where kids can have their faces painted, play all kinds of games and win prizes ranging from stuffed animals to live goldfish. A silent auction is held with folks bidding on donated goods while food vendors offer a variety of meals in addition

to traditional fair foods. B&R Wrecking brings over a “bash car” with

a sledge hammer kids can use to pound on it. There’s an all-white “draw-on” car for people to decorate, a Lightening McQueen car, tractor and peddle-puller races and Monster truck rides. One of the parents even built a miniature golf course that has proven to be a very popular attraction.Sheila estimates that about 1,500 people

attended the event last year. Admission is free to everyone; booth and vehicle entry fees raise the funds. Last year they raised $13,406 to help support the school. Over the past four years the event has raised nearly $42,400 with all of those proceeds donated directly to the school.The 2014 Corridor Car Show will be held

M. Allen Swift of West Hartford, Connecticut, who died in 2005 at the age of 102, was a legend among luxury car collectors. He owned his 1928 two-tone green Phantom I Rolls-Royce for 77 years, longer than anyone in the world had ever owned an individual Rolls-Royce. In recognition of that fact, Rolls-Royce Motors presented him with a crystal Spirit of Ecstasy award in 1994.In 2002, when Swift was 99 years old,

he approached the Springfield Museum

to discuss finding a new home for his Rolls in the same town where it was built. In the summer of 2005, the museum found a building that could be converted. In September, just before Swift passed away, museum staff learned that his estate would donate $1,000,000 to purchase the building that now displays his car.Although Swift drove the roadster

for nearly eight decades, it had only 170,000 miles on it when it came to the museum.“Mr. Swift’s car still works and runs

very, very quiet,” said Guy McLain, director of the Connecticut Valley Historical Museum in Springfield.

Swift’s model, which he received new as a graduation gift from his father, is a Piccadilly Roadster with chassis number S273FP. Henry Hensley, chairman of the Phantom I Society, said that the Piccadilly is one of the most sought-after bodies on the early Rolls-Royce automobiles. Swift’s car is one of about 2,500 Phantoms made in Springfield. About half of those cars still exist today, but most are in museums.

next generation of young drivers who love to race and get them off the streets, out on the track or onto the drag strip.Chad has lined up more than a dozen sponsors, including the

Function 4 Junction, to help promote that message as he takes his 1937 Ford AA/S Coupe to drag strips all around Oregon.It’s a fast car, all right – Chad’s best ET is 6.56, topped out at

214mph. Built by Gary Hansen with a Ford Boss hemi built by Carol Carter and Jon Kaase, it’s as stylish as it is fast.As a member of the JC Quartermilers racing club, Chad and

his crew of family and friends – Mike Robeck, Eric Reich, Andy McCoy, Jon Walberg, Les McMyne and Brooke Percell – will try to encourage young folks to test their driving skills and satisfy their need for speed in the kind of safe, supervised environments that race tracks can provide. The best way to do that is by showing them how it’s done. Look for The Boss to make an appearance at at a track near you this summer!
