FUMC LENTEN SERIES "Our Brokenness made Whole"

The Season of Lent: Lent is a season of 40 days, not counting Sundays, which begins Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. The 40 days represent the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation and preparing to begin his public ministry. The 40 days invite us to consider the reality of the brokenness of humanity, yet at the same time call us to remember the redeeming love of God given to overcome all brokenness and restore humanity to Godself in Christ. In Matthew 11:28 Jesus says: "Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest." It's a broken world and we are broken people. This is a reality that is felt deeply in our day-to-day lives. We cannot help but be touched by the confusion, hurt, grief, pain, and overwhelming darkness. And yet, Jesus Christ came to this world so that he might live with us, suffer, die and rise again for our sake. That is the beautiful reality we celebrate this season. Together, during Lent, we will have an opportunity to talk honestly and openly about our brokenness, as we remember God freely offers to us wholeness and restoration.

"God of broken things, use your levitating power now to resurrect all that lays still, mobilize these broken hearts

to reunite these shattered shards for HOPE is YOURS and not just ours.

After all, it has always been,

YOU who put us back together again." - Pastor Ani

Join us for our continued Lenten Series:

"Our Brokenness made Whole"

April 2: Lenten Cantata & New Member Service, 10 a.m. The Chancel Choir will present a Lenten cantata entitled, "You Are the Christ!" It is a meditative reflection on the life and crucifixion of Christ from the perspective of His disciples, specifically Peter, featuring artistic narration from the perspective of Peter as we experience with him the miracles and sacrifice of Christ. In this service we will also celebrate communion and welcome eight people who have completed the New Membership Class into full participation at First United Methodist Church

We joyfully celebrate our new members!

April 9: Palm Sunday, 10 a.m.

We will begin our service by processing from the front lawn to the sanctuary, as we remember Jesus' entry into Jerusalem.

April 13: Maundy Thursday, 7 p.m. We will be having a "Living Last Supper." All are invited to join us in the Fellowship Hall for a simple meal together. We will have actors recreate the Last Supper, with reflections from Pastor Ani, and then all join together in a moment of remembrance as we partake in communion.

April 14: Good Friday, 6 p.m. We encourage everyone to attend this significant and poignant service. It is so very important - one cannot truly enjoy the brilliance of Easter without encountering the passion of Christ. With moving readings, deep reflection, and powerful music, we will journey together to the cross.

Easter Day Easter Sunrise Service, 6:30 a.m.

This will be a quiet and reflective service of healing and wholeness. We will remember the early hours, when the empty tomb was discovered and our hope was made complete.

Easter Service, 10 a.m. This will be a glorious highlight of our year! With music, dancers, and artful worship, we will celebrate Christ's miraculous resurrection!

Easter Sunday Fellowship, 11 a.m. Following the service in Fellowship Hall we will come together for a time of joyful fellowship, with refreshments, music from our Praise Team, crafts, and an Easter egg hunt for the kids on the front lawn. Please invite your family and friends to experience the JOY!

Confirmation Sunday Sunday, April 23, 2017 during worship Confirmation classes allow our young people to investigate what it means to be a devoted follower of Christ and to make their first public profession of faith. During confirmation, they will reflect on the most basic tenants of faith and will be able to ask questions about what it means to be a United Methodist. Confirmation is not a destination. It is more of a way station, a place where we renew our commitment to the journey we have been traveling under the care of others.

Join us on Sunday, April 23, Confirmation Sunday, as we celebrate our youth as they complete the process of Confirmation and officially become members of First United Methodist Church. Devin Ayers Madeline Ayers Ben Buckles Camryn Keys Kiran Grandison Jagger Simas Let us rejoice, give thanks and celebrate their commitment to live as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.

Easter Egg Hunt Donations It's almost Easter and our Children's Ministry needs your donations of plastic eggs and candy for our Annual Easter Egg Hunt on the front lawn. Please drop off your donations in the church office no later than Sunday, April 2.

United Methodist Women

Prayer & Self-Denial Program Thursday, April 6, 2017 Fireside Room

Join the United Methodist Women on Thursday, April 4 and learn how you can be a part of the United Methodist Women Call to Prayer and Self-Denial offering to support women and girls' health issues. Health care for women and children has been at the heart of United Methodist Women since the organization was founded in the 1800s. Our foremothers made the choice to act to save women's lives. They chose to build hospitals and clinics, to train women and girls to serve as doctors and nurses and to send missionaries to initiate the work. Today, United Methodist Women continues to support the health and family needs of women and children around the globe. Despite these efforts, maternal and child mortality remains a significant global challenge. Maternal and child health is a mission priority for 2017. The Call to Prayer and Self-Denial offering will support partners that offer programs and advocate for the health of mothers and their children. Stop by the UMW table in the church lobby on Sunday, April 2 after worship and discover how United Methodist Women turn faith, hope and love into action on behalf of women, children and youth around the world.

Birthday Sunday Fellowship Sunday, April 23 Fellowship Hall, after worship Everyone is welcome to join us after worship on Sunday, April 23 to celebrate our April birthdays. We will have birthday cake, coffee and punch.

Home For The Holidays Help Wanted Home For the Holidays 2017 Home for the Holidays is the largest annual community - outreach fundraising event of the year for First United Methodist Church. Without volunteers from within our church community the event, as we know it, would not be possible. Two openings currently exist in leadership roles for highly motivated and dedicated men and women. Training will be provided. Available Positions: Event Chairperson Understudy: This is an entry level position the first year; advancing to Co-Chair the following year, and culminating as Chairperson the third year. Chairperson for the Apple Orchard Brunch: There are many volunteers in this area that make the Brunch "happen", but someone is needed to coordinate the efforts. Prior Brunch experience is desirable but not required. Now is the time to act; planning for Home For The Holidays 2017 is underway. For more information and/or to volunteer your time, talent, and leadership, Please contact either Diana Scott at [email protected] or Susan Lighthall at [email protected].

Coffee & Conversation Ministry Volunteers The Coffee and Conversation ministry takes place each Sunday morning in our Fellowship Hall. Our goal is to provide a safe, neutral place where anyone can come to experience a rest from their burdens, enjoy some coffee and a little food - both spiritual and physical, and learn of community resources where they may find assistance. We are looking for a few volunteers to help in Fellowship Hall on Sunday mornings 8 a.m.- 9:15 a.m. If you feel led by the Lord to help in service our community's under-resourced, contact Bob Harper at [email protected].

Coffee & Conversation Laundry Ministry What is C&C Laundry Ministry? On the first and third Sunday mornings during Coffee & Conversation, 10 to 12 people are able to sign up to bring their laundry to the self-service coin-operated laundry one-half block from our church. Clean clothes and bedding help them improve their over-all health, self-esteem, social and employment opportunities. We have been providing laundry services to people without shelter for over one year, originally funded with a grant and donations. We average $100 per month for washing machine coins and detergent. If you are able, please help by giving a donation to FUMC Laundry Ministry. Mail your donation to the church office or drop in the Sunday offering plate. Write "Laundry Ministry" on your check memo. If you have questions, or would like to volunteer with the Laundry Ministry contact Judy Church at [email protected] or Chyril Turner at [email protected].

Salvation Army Berberian Shelter and Transitional Living Center Methodist Providing Meals "friends + grace + food" We serve supper meals for the Salvation Army Berberian Shelter on 9th and D street each month. This encouragement is a two-way street of blessings: we exchange faith development and friendship as well as providing hope for one another. Meal dates for the next three months are chosen. The youth lead the way! They have offered to serve on Wednesday, April 26. Go teens! Friday, May 26 and Monday, June 19 is open for you family or friends to serve or cook part of a meal. Contact Judy Church at [email protected] for more information.
