2018 STEER TAG-IN SATURDAY, JANUARY 13 *NEW TIME* 9 - 10 A.M.

FULTON CO. FAIRGROUNDS–JFB OFFICE All steer project animals (Market, Born & Raised & Dairy) for the 2018 Fulton County Junior Fair Show must have an Electronic Identification Tag (EID) for identification & attend tag-in day with the exception below. You do not need to bring the steer to the January 13th tag-in day if the steer project animal was your 2017 feeder calf project or a 2017 feeder calf project purchased from a sibling that was already tagged with an EID at the June 2017 Fulton County Feeder Calf tag-in day. However, you must complete the “Animal Tag-In Registration Form” with the animals EID number plus all other information. Take or mail the card to the Fulton Co. Extension Office before January 13th or take it to tag-in on the 13th. Please note, exhibitors bear full responsibility to provide the correct EID number on the card and are welcome to bring their animal to tag in day. To be eligible for the 2018 Born & Raised Steer class, the animal had to be tagged as a Born & Raised eligible animal at the June, 2017 Fulton County Feeder Calf tag-in day. You must bring your Born & Raised eligible animal to tag-in on January 13th if you purchased the animal from someone other than a sibling. All Born & Raised steers must turn in a “Jr. Born & Raised Market Beef Steer Application Form” by January 13th. The “Fulton County Steer ID Card” requirement in the above paragraph applies to Born & Raised steers also. The Fulton County Steer ID Card and the Jr. Born & Raised Market Beef Steer Application Form can be found at: http://fulton.osu.edu/program-areas/4-h-youth-development/youth-forms-and-applications Exhibitors do not need to be at Tag-in on the 13th. Each EID is $2. Please have exact change. AGAIN FOR 2018: 2018 OHIO STATE FAIR TO REQUIRE DNA SUBMISSION AND ELECTRONIC IDENTIFICATION FOR ALL MARKET BEEF ANIMALS The Ohio State Fair Beef Department adopted new protocols in 2016 for identifying market beef animals and will again follow those protocols with the 2018 fair. These protocols include the use of an electronic identification (EID) ear tag that has a unique 15-digit number and a DNA sample that will be submitted for all market beef animals that exhibitors plan to enter in the 2018 Ohio State Fair Junior Market Beef show.

The DNA collection will be in the form of a hair sample that will be submitted to the Ohio State Fair by January 15, 2018 to meet the ownership deadlines for market beef animals. Fulton Co. does have special permission by OSF to hold their tag-in day on January 13th and exhibitors will retain their eligibility. Entries (for Fulton Co.) need to be postmarked by noon January 13th. Along with the DNA hair submission, each market animal’s 15-digit EID tag must also be included on the DNA packet. DNA packets may be picked up at an exhibitor’s local Ohio State University Extension Office or at any Ohio Cattlemen’s Association (OCA) BEST sanctioned show prior to the January 15 deadline.

Exhibitors who have questions or would like additional information about the new identification protocols are asked to contact Stacey French at the Ohio State Fair by calling 614-644-4049 or by emailing [email protected].

The following articles provide information about some of the exciting 4-H opportunities awaiting YOU in 2018! Over 100 youth may be selected to participate in these 4-H activities for teens. The selection process is relatively easy if you follow these steps: 1. Read carefully what each opportunity is about. 2. Fill out the resume’ and application enclosed in this newsletter or print from the website fulton.osu.edu 3. Bring the resume’ and application with you to your interview. 4. Report for an interview on Sunday, December 10 or Monday, December 11, anytime between 6:00-8:00 p.m.

at the Fulton County Extension Office. You will be interviewed in the order signed in. Interviews will last about fifteen minutes.

You will be notified by mail by January 1, which activities you have been selected for so you are able to plan your summer calendar in advance. Why, you may be asking yourself, are the activities offered through the Fulton County 4-H Program so incredible?!! They are, in fact, as diverse as any offered in Ohio or in the U.S.A. This is possible because we use the interest generated by the Fulton County 4-H Endowment Fund to help finance the cost of these activities. The Endowment Fund has grown throughout the years because many of you, your families, and your 4-H clubs have donated to it.

HOST A JAPANESE STUDENT We are looking for families to host Japanese youth, ages 13-16, from mid-July through mid-August. 4-H host families may choose the gender and age of their guest. While in Fulton County, the Japanese young people want to learn and experience American family life. Families are to involve the student in their typical routine, provide a bed to sleep in, three meals a day, and TLC (tender loving care.) The Japanese have an organization similar to 4-H whose purpose is to have its members learn English and come to the U.S.A. They will not be fluent in English, nor are you to be fluent in Japanese. Everything will work out fine as it has for the 20 or so families in Fulton County who have hosted in the past few years. If you are even interested in hosting a student, check your application form or call for more information.
