The objective of this research is to study the stylistic attributes of Ban Chiang pottery motif in order to be the guideline for implementing the ancient Thai motif in art designs and creations. The research methodology is based on both literature review and primary research in the areas of Ban Chiang civilization, including the cooperation with the Ban Chiang heritage project / the Ban Chiang pottery OTOP center, located in Ban Chiang subdistrict, Nong Han district, Udon Thani Province. The purpose of the field trips is to investigate the application and development of the Ban Chiang motif within Ban Chiang community at present.

The results of the study are as follows:

    1. The unique, stylistic attribute of Ban Chiang arts is the painted pottery written in red delicate and complex curves showing movement. The patterns are divided into three groups: natural pattern, geometric pattern and independent pattern. In the view of abstract and semi-abstract arts, patterns on pottery are not merely decorative for aesthetic value, but some designs also have symbolic meanings which can be interpreted to apprehend the environment and certain beliefs of prehistoric inhabitants at Ban Chiang. The most popular pattern widely known as the symbol of Ban Chiang pottery pattern is the spiral pattern.

    2. Ban Chiang pottery patterns have been presented in various ornamental areas and based on the principles of pattern designing. The patterns on pottery are converted to be drawings and the drawings are placed on several objects for decorative purpose. This can also be an archetype of applying ancient patterns for modern adornment.
