Remission of feesRemission of fees only applies to vocationaland further education courses and part timeand professional courses.

Non-vocational (short courses), full costBusiness First courses and Higher Educationand University courses do not qualify forremission of fees.

If you are over 19 tuition fees on vocationalcourses will be remitted if you are:

• Claiming Jobseekers Allowance (JSAincome based) or your partner is claimingand the claim is joint. (Please note JSAonly allows you to study up to 16 learninghours per week)

• Claiming Employment and SupportAllowance (ESA income based) in thework related activity group only. (Pleasenote ESA only allows you to study up to16 learning hours per week)

• Taking learning aims such as Adult Skills for Life and Functional Skills inLiteracy and Numeracy. (excluding Skillsfor Life and ESOL)

Remission of awarding body costs(examination and registration fees)If you are entitled to remission of tuition feesfor level 2 and 3 entitlements you will also beentitled to remission of awarding body costswhere you are in receipt of one of thefollowing means tested benefits: JobseekersAllowance (JSA contribution based), CouncilTax Benefit, Housing Benefit, Income Support,Working Tax Credit (with income less than£15,726), Pension Credit, Employment andSupport Allowance (ESA) and unwageddependents of these categories.

Only pay 25% of fees (1)This scheme applies to vocational furthereducation courses and part time andprofessional courses only and is our FeesTransitional Protection Scheme (FTPS).

To qualify for the FTPS you must be in receiptof one of the following means tested benefits:Jobseekers Allowance (JSA contributionbased), Council Tax Benefit, Housing Benefit,Income Support, Working Tax Credits (withincome less than £15,276), Pension Credits,Employment and Support Allowance (unlessin the Work Related Activity Group), or areunwaged dependents.

Evidence of benefits must be provided or feeswill be payable.

If you are entitled to the FTPS, you will onlypay 25% of tuition fees and awarding bodycosts for the duration of courses starting the2011-12 academic year.

10% Discount for earlyenrolments(2)A 10% discount will be offered for enrolmentscompleted on or before 31 August 2011 forshort courses starting between 1 September2011 and 31 July 2012. This discount is only applicable to tuition fees. Exam andregistration fees will be payable. Payment by instalments will not be available on these courses.

Free level 2 and level 3 courses (3)If you are:

• 19 years and over studying your first fulllevel 2 qualification

• 19-24 years studying your first full level 3qualification

• 19 years and over studying your first fulllevel 3 qualification and do not hold a fulllevel 2 qualification

If you don’t currently hold a level 2 or level 3qualification then you may be entitled to free tuition costs. However registration andexamination fees may be applicable unless you are receiving any benefits as listed on the money matters leaflet on thecollege website.

Childcare fees paid (4)This childcare initiative is available if you areunder 20 when you enrol on your programme.This fund will pay childcare fees whilst you study.For more details visit www.direct.gov.uk andfollow the links for Care to Learn or call thehelpline on 0800 1218989. Adult Learning Grants (ALG)If you are a returning student and are currently in receipt of ALG, then you must bring yourNotice of Entitlement (NoE) with you for 2011-12to continue to receive your weekly paymentsfrom the Learner Support Service.

If you are a new student then ALG is no longer available.

Education Maintenance Allowance(EMA)If you have already been receiving EMA you may still be entitled to continue on thescheme in the 2011-12 year.

If you are a new student and have neverreceived EMA you will not be entitled to apply,however a new bursary scheme will begin inplace of EMA. For more details speak to ourStudent Finance Team in the college.

Discretionary Learner Support FundThis fund can assist with the direct costsassociated with study such as travel, childcare,books and essential equipment and clothing for certain courses. What entry qualifications do Ineed to do an Apprenticeship?Entry on to an Apprenticeship is notentirely based on academic achievementsas we realise that everyone’s educationand work experience is different. Mostplaces are however subject to GCSEentry requirements which will determinewhether you will start on a level 2 or level 3.

Level 2 Apprenticeship – you will need 4GCSEs at grade D-E including maths andEnglish

Level 3 Apprenticeship – you will need 3GCSEs at grade A*-C including maths and English

You are required to take an initialassessment entry test in maths andEnglish to determine your level.

How does an Apprenticeship work?As part of the Apprenticeship frameworkyou will be expected to spend four days a week in the work place where you willwork towards an NVQ qualification andone day here at the college studyingtowards a technical certificate andfunctional skills. Achieving anApprenticeship could take between 1 year to 3 years.

I am already employedIf you are already with an employer, thenan Apprenticeship is an ideal work-basedlearning qualification. It is an ideal way foryou to ‘learn whilst you earn’!

I don’t have an employer, can the college help me find asuitable employer?If you are not in employment, the collegeoperates an Apprenticeship matchingservice. You send us your details and CVand we will search our database of localemployers to try and find you a “match” in your chosen industry.

Employers and educationalinstitutions like colleges anduniversities measure yourqualifications in levels. The levels go from Entry (E)to Level 8 (Doctorate). Identifying your current level may highlight therange of routes available to you and the nextlevel that you can progress to.

Use the table below to identify your currentlevel, this will then help you to decide whichcourse(s) may be suitable for you. For somecourses you may need to start at a lower levelthan your current educational level to gain thepractical skills and knowledge needed withinthe subject.

Many courses are listed as Award, Certificate orDiploma this does not necessarily relate to thelevel of the course, and is generally to do withthe amount of time needed to complete it.

Some courses may require additional orspecific entry requirements, therefore this tableis provided as a guide only.

Understanding the Level Entry level courses are for beginners and aredesigned to assist you in gaining basicknowledge and skills.

Intermediate level courses include a diverserange of work activities and allow you to takemore responsibilities for your own studies. Ifyou achieved GCSEs at grades A*-C you haveachieved level 2.
