2 For Gas Service

Smith-Blair Full Circle® Repair Clamps are flexible. Each clamp consists of one or more stainless steel bandswith cast lugs securely attached to the bands. The lugsaccommodate the bolts and nuts when mounting theclamp on the pipe.

Each clamp has a full encirclement, tapered, overlap-ping, gridded gasket with a flush mounted, bonded-in,stainless steel bridge plate that spans the band openingbetween the lugs and provides a full circumferential sealon the pipe.

A Full Circle® Repair Clamp is fast and simple toinstall and requires no special tools. The clamp iswrapped around the pipe, properly positioned over thearea to be repaired or connected, and the bolts are thentightened. This installation compacts the rubber gaskettightly against the full circumference of the pipe wall form-ing a leak resistant seal.

Smith-Blair, Inc. Full Circle® Repair Clamps solve these piping problems:

**Holes should not exceed 1/3 the clamp width. When a section of pipe wall equal to 40-percent or more of the pipe’s circumference is broken away, a section ofsheet metal should be placed over the opening to provide a sealing surface for the gasket.***Cracks and splits require a small hole be drilled at each end to prevent spreading . 1 inch of clamp width on both sides of the damaged area is required.****Pin holes require 1 inch of clamp width on both sides of the damaged area.

**Holes ***Cracks or splits ****Pin Holes Pulled service connections orbranch lines

Failures in gas piping both above and below ground presentthe operating gas utility with the problem of making repairs asrapidly as possible to remove the hazard. The use of Full Circle®Clamps permits utilities to perform fast and efficient repairs.

Leaks in cast iron, steel, or PVC pipe caused by corrosion, circumferential and longitudinal splits, porous weld, or puncturesmay be repaired economically with Full Circle® Clamps usingonly hand tools.

Both single and double band clamps are available. Theselection of type is dependent upon which class of pipe is usedby the utility. If the distribution system is primarily steel or castiron, the single band clamp will meet most applications. Whereboth types of pipe are used, the double band clamp, which cov-ers a wider O.D. range, is better suited. This clamp fits both kindsof pipe, thereby reducing the inventory required for emergencies.

The use of these clamps on PE pipe is not recommended!

Product Features Lower material and labor costs - Each size fits a range

of pipe types within its range, and can be used forrepair, joining or tapping.

Less crew, equipment, excavation and schedulingcomplications once the damaged pipe is exposed; oneman with a single wrench can easily make the repair.

No need for extra pipe fittings; Flexible Full Circle®

Repair Clamps are able to conform to pipe irregularitiesand provide an efficient leak resistant seal.

No need for complete line shutdown and possiblecontamination - Full Circle® Repair Clamps can beinstalled quickly and easily. Tightening the centermostbolts will usually stop flow of gas and then the otherbolts can be equally tightened.

No special tools or skills required for installation.

General Information

Compare the ease of the Full Circle® method to split mechanical sleeves or replacing a section of pipe and you will be convinced Full Circle® is the best method!

Warning:Full Circle® Repaired Clamps do not restrain axial pipe move-ment. Use of axial restraint device will be required.

5For Gas Service

Bridge plates that are glued into recesses formed in the gas-ket during molding, may not fit the recess properly. Theremay be void spaces that create low pressure points, as at “A”and “B” above which are potential leak points.

Smith-Blair Repair Clamps seal positively and effectively

Other Methods of Bridge Plate

Bridge plates attached to the clamp band or glued to the outsideof the gasket have exposed metal edges that hold the band awayfrom the gasket, setting up low pressure points as in “A” and “B”above, which are potential leak paths. The exposed metal edgecan also hang up on the clamp band and impede tightening of theclamp.

Smith-Blair tapered, lapped gaskets provide a continuous anduniform seal over the full O.D. range of the clamp.

Smith-Blair® bridge plates are precision set, flush mountedand securely bonded into the gasket during the molding oper-ation. This provides a smooth surface, which insures a 100%encirclement of uniform gasket pressure. A dependablemethod of sealing.

Smith-Blair finely grided gaskets have 16 grids to the squareinch; form a series of dams to conform to irregularities on thepipe surface; and seal effectively against rough or pitted sur-faces to prevent development of a leak path.

225 Full Circle® Repair Clamp Single Band

Smith-Blair 225 Single Band Full Circle® RepairClamps provide a fast, economical means of repairingbreaks, holes, cracks or other type of damage. The clampsare made for cast iron, steel and other types of pipe and havea built-in O.D. range enabling each clamp to fit several pipeoutside diameters within a nominal pipe size range.

Full Circle® Repair Clamps feature a lap type gasket withmolded tapered ends to provide efficient equalized sealing atthe lap joint on any pipe within the clamp’s range. The gaskethas a finely grided surface with the resilience to easily con-form to irregularities on rough pipe surface or in pitted areas, providing an effective seal all around the pipe.

A stainless steel bridge plate spans the opening of thelugs and is bonded flush into the gasket to prevent wrinklingin the lug area, providing an even gasket pressure at allpoints around the full circumference of the pipe.

The band is made of stainless steel, selected to meet thenecessary corrosion resistance, flexibility and strengthrequirements. Lugs are securely attached to the stainlesssteel band and have mutually supporting stabilizing fingers topermit maximum torquing of the bolts. The lug designincludes a drop-in bolt feature that eliminates loose parts, saves time, and aids installation under adverse conditions.

The bolts and nuts are low alloy steel with rolled threads, double radius heads and a generous shoulder to prevent boltrotation under maximum torque loading.

Smith-Blair 225 Super Range Double Band FullCircle® Repair Clamps provide a fast, economical means ofrepairing holes, cracks or other types of damage to cast iron, steel and other types of pipe.

Full Circle® Repair Clamps feature a lap type gasket withmolded tapered ends to provide efficient equalized sealing atthe lap joint on any pipe within the clamp’s range. The gaskethas a finely grided surface with the resilience to easily conformto irregularities on rough pipe surfaces or in pitted areas, pro-viding an effective seal all around the pipe.

A stainless steel bridge plate spans the opening of thelugs and is bonded flush into the gasket to prevent wrinkling inthe lug area, providing even gasket pressure at all pointsaround the full circumference of the pipe.

The band is made of stainless steel, selected to meet thenecessary corrosion resistance, flexibility and strengthrequirements. Lugs are securely attached to the stainlesssteel band, and have mutually supporting stabilizing fingers topermit maximum torquing of the bolts. The lug design includesa drop-in bolt feature that eliminates loose parts, saves timeand aids installation under adverse conditions.

The bolts and nuts are low alloy steel with rolled threads, double radius heads and a generous shoulder to prevent boltrotation under maximum torque loading.

Multiple Band Clamps

For protection against aggressive soil conditions found inmany areas of the country, a polywrap kit is available for FullCircle® Clamps.

The kit consists of 6 mil (min.) thick polyethylene sheet-ing and an extra nut. The nut is for the attachment of an anodeor bonding wire, since the gasket electrically insulates theclamp from the pipe.

The sheeting, when loosely wrapped around the clamp, protects it from the surrounding soil, biological activity andstray currents.

Polyethylene encasement has been subject to a lot ofresearch and is recognized as an effective method of mitigat-ing corrosion in underground piping systems.

Provides a fast, economical means of repairing holes, cracks or other types of damage to cast iron, steel andother types of rigid pipe at higher pressures.

A lap type gasket with molded tapered ends providesefficient equalized sealing at the lap joint on any pipe within the clamp’s range. The gasket has a finely gridded surface with the resilience to easily conform to irregularities onrough pipe surfaces or in pitted areas, providing aneffective seal all around the pipe.

Both styles are designed with two sections or more ofheavy welded carbon or stainless steel that bolt together onthe pipe making it easy to assemble over the damaged areaor to assemble off to the side of the repair area and thenslide over the damaged area.

A stainless steel bridge plate spans the opening of the lugsand is bonded flush into the gasket to prevent wrinkling inthe lug area, providing even gasket pressure at all pointsaround the full circumference of the pipe.

Carbon steel (267) or 304 stainless steel (268) body, selected to meet the necessary corrosion resistance, flexibility and strength requirements for higher pressureapplications.

The 267 style clamp has feed-through lugs like the Smith-Blair 632/622 Tapping Sleeve, while the 268 style clamphas lugs similar to the 266/261 style Smith-Blair FullCircle®. Both give the structural strength required to handlehigher pressures.

When ordering, customer must identify size, type, condition of pipe and working pressure.

Thoroughly clean the pipe where the clamp will be installed.

If conditions permit, place a referencemark on the pipe a measured dis-tance from the center of damagedarea.Thoroughly lubricate the pipe withsoap solution or other suitable lubri-cant.

Place the clamp around the pipe cen-tered over the break or damaged areawith the gasket flap at the top.

Tuck the gasket flap in place andmesh the lug fingers. Engage the cen-termost bolt(s) in the drop lugs, andtighten finger tight. (NOTE: If the pipesurface is wet or has been lubricated, the clamp may be assem-bled besidethe break or damaged area and slidinto position.)

5 Rotate the clamp to insure proper seat-ing of the gasket, and position the boltsand nuts for convenient tightening.

6 Tighten the bolts working from the cen-ter outward. Completely tightening the center boltwill usually stop or sufficiently retardthe leak to simplify completion of theinstallation.

7 When bolts have been tightened suffi-ciently to stop the leak, measure fromthe reference (Instruction 2) to the cen-ter of the clamp to see if the clamp isproperly positioned over the break ordamaged area. Loosen the bolts andreposition the clamp if necessary.

8 Recheck the bolt tightness, and torque the bolts as evenlyas possible.

Do not exceed listed bolt torques:Through 4.73 O.D. = 50 ft. lbs.Above 4.73 O.D. = 70 ft. lbs.

Sufficient tightening to seal the leak is required.

Rotate the clamp to insure properseating of the gasket, and positionthe bolts and nuts for convenienttightening.

If conditions permit, place a refer-ence mark on the pipe a mea-sured distance from the center ofthe damaged area. Thoroughlylubricate the pipe with soap solu-tion or other suitable lubricant.

Check the clamp to insure that thegasket flaps are properly posit-ioned, and the closed lugs (lugswithout drop-in bolt feature) areproperly spaced: approximately3/8 inch for pipe diameter near thebottom of the clamp O.D. rangeand approximately 1 1/4 inch forpipe diameters near the top of theclamp O.D. range.

Place the clamp around the pipecentered over the break or dam-aged area with the gasket flap atthe top.

Tighten the bolts working from thecenter outward. Completely tight-ening the center bolt will usuallystop or sufficiently retard the leakto simplify completion of the install-ation.

When bolts have been tightenedsufficiently to stop the leak, meas-ure from the reference mark(Instruction2) to the center of theclamp to see if the clamp is proper-ly positioned over the break ordamaged area. Loosen the boltsand reposition the clamp if neces-sary.

1. Check pipe diameters to insure the correct clamp is beinginstalled.

2. Thoroughly clean the pipe so the surface is smooth and freeof dirt, corrosion or other debris.

3. If conditions permit, place a reference mark on the pipe ameasured distance from the center of the break or damagedarea.

4. Loosen nuts so they are flush with the top of the studs andplace the clamp around the pipe centered over the break ordamaged area with the gasket flap at the top.

5. Tuck the gasket flap in place and mesh the lug fingers bypulling the keeper bar upward, and snap the lip over thefinger weldment base.NOTE: The clamp may be assembled beside the break ordamaged area and slid into position if the pipe surface is wet

or has been lubricated.6. Tighten the center most nuts, finger tight, and rotate the

clamp in the direction of the threaded end of the studs toassure smoothing out wrinkles of the tapered gasket ends.

7. Position the nuts for convenient tightening. Measure from thereference mark to the center of the clamp to insure the clampis properly positioned over the break or damaged area.

8. Tighten nuts working from the center outward. Completelytightening the center nut will usually stop or retard the leak tosimplify completion of the installation.

9. Torque nuts sufficiently to stop the leak. Recheck nut tight-ness and torque as evenly as possible.

Do not exceed 70 Ft./Lbs. of torque. This product does not restrain axial pipe movement.

2. Thoroughly clean the pipe so the surface is smooth and freeof dirt, corrosion or other debris.

3. If conditions permit, place a reference mark on the pipe ameasured distance from the center of the damaged area.

4. Loosen nuts so they are flush with the top of studs. Place theclamp half with fingers of both ends on the top of the pipe withgasket armored nearest the installer and centered over thedamaged area. Pass the other clamp half underneath thepipe with the armored gasket end away from the installer.

5. Tuck the gasket flaps in place and mesh the lug fingers andsnap the keeper bar lip over the finger weldment base. Pullup on the keeper bar nearest the installer and snap the lipover the other finger weldment base.NOTE: The clamp may be assembled beside the break ordamaged area and slid into position if the pipe surface is wetor has been lubricated.

6. Tighten the nuts finger tight and rotate the clamp to smoothout tapered ends of the gasket. Position the nuts for conven-ient tightening.

7. Measure from the reference mark to the center of the clampto insure that the clamp is centered over the damaged area.

8. Tighten the nuts working from the center outward.Completely tightening the center nut will usually stop or retardthe leakto simplify completion of the installation.

9. Torque nuts sufficiently to stop the leak. Recheck nut tight-ness and torque as evenly as possible.

Do Not exceed 70 Ft./Lbs. of Torque.

NOTE: Gaps between the lug bases should be maintainedas equally as possible on each side The gaps should beapproximately 3/8” for pipe diameter near the bottom ofthe clamp O.D. range and 1 1/4” near the top of the O.D.range.

Selecting the Proper Full Circle® Repair Clamp:When determining the exact outside diameter (OD) of pipe to

be repaired, select the type of clamp (i.e. single band, super range, etc.) and type of materials for clamp construction (i.e. SS Lugs, DILug, SS Bolts, Alloy Bolts). Select the clamp that has an OD rangethat includes the OD size of the pipe to be repaired.

The width of the clamp should be sufficient to provide at least 3inches of clamp on solid pipe on each side of the break or damagedarea on pipes 12 inches or smaller. On pipes larger than 12 inches, the clamp should provide at least 4 inches of clamp on solid pipeson each side of the break or damaged area.

Useful Installation Tips:Always clean the pipe as thoroughly as possible.Place a reference mark on the pipe. After completing the install-ation this can be used to check the clamp for proper position overthe break or damaged area. Lubricating the pipe with water, soap solution or other suitablelubricant helps to overcome friction and allows proper seating of thegasket.Cleaning and lubricating the bolt threads will reduce friction andpermit greater torque transfer to the lugs. Leaving sufficient pressure on the line to keep gas flowing willassist in preventing foreign matter or contaminants from entering thepipeline.A Full Circle® Repair Clamp can be assembled loosely along sidethe damage and slid over the damage if the pipe is well lubricated.Completely tight-ening the center bolt will usually stop or suffi-ciently retard the leak to simplify completion of the installation.Drilling a small hole at each end of a crack in the pipe will usual-ly relieve stresses and prevent the crack from spreading.

Improvising Larger O.D. Clamps:To fill an emergency need for a large O.D. clamp when none areavailable, smaller clamps can be joined together to make a multipleband large clamp, using the following steps:1. Determine exact O.D. of the pipe to be repaired.2. Select two or three smaller clamps of sizes whose combined

O.D. ranges equals the correct O.D. range fit the damaged pipe.A. Example:Pipe to be repaired to 20” cast iron 21.60” O.D.Use 3 each. 6” clamps 6.84-7.24 O.D. range6.84-7.246.84-7.246.84-7.2420.52-21.72 Improvised Clamp O.D. Range

3. It is not necessary to use clamps of the same size, but theyshould be as close in size as possible.

4. The bridge plate molded into the gasket has a pre-formedcurvature for each size range to facilitate installation. To ensureproper sealing the bridge plates must be straightened beforeinstallation.

Special Orders & Other Size Clamps:To order clamps not listed in the catalog or for special applications, the following information is required:

Type of clamp (regular or all stainless)Pipe outside diameter (O.D.)Line PressuresLine ContentsType of damage (hole, beam break, crack, etc.)Extent of damage (size of hole, length or crack, etc.)Type of pipeline (above ground, buried, underwater

etc.)Environment (aggressive soil, sand, salt water, etc.)Tap size and type (NPT or CC) if tapped clamp

coupling is needed.

Applications on Plastic Pipe:According to the AGA Plastic Pipe Manual for Gas Service, “bandtype clamps have been successfully used with PVC pipe to makerepairs. The important consideration is that the clamp exert limitedunit bearing pressure on the PVC pipe. A soft gasket formulation withwaffle type inner surface would thus generally be preferred for thisapplication. In all cases the method used should follow procedureswhich have been established and qualified for test.”
