2.3 Networking

PRIMEFLEX for VMware EVO:RAIL ships with either eight RJ-45 or SFP+ NIC ports. Eight corresponding ports are required for each EVO:RAIL appliance on the top-of-rack (TOR) switch(es). One port, either on the TOR switch or on a management VLAN that can reach the TOR network, is required for a workstation/laptop with a web browser for EVO:RAIL Configuration and Management.

Integrated Remote management is available on each node through one 1GbE iRMC port that can connect to a management network. It is recommended to connect the iRMC 1GbE port on each node to a separate 1GbE switch or to use four additional ports on your TOR switch. Operate the iRMC user interface in a separate broadcast domain for the server management.

The iRMC ports are pre-configured by DHCP and with the default user Id admin and password admin.

I The iRMC IP address is displayed at the bottom right of the console screen when the Fujitsu logo appears during system boot.

Any other ports on the appliance will be disabled.

The figure 3 on page 12 shows how to connect the nodes to the TOR switch.

Appliance specification

2.3.1 Default network settings

PRIMEFLEX for VMware EVO:RAIL ships with a default configuration.)

– Management traffic is untagged and must be able to go over a native VLAN on your TOR switch or you will not be able to successfully create the appliance and ESXi hosts. (All other traffic - vSphere vMotion, Virtual SAN, and VM traffic - is tagged for the VLANs you specify during configuration.)

– The default IP settings for PRIMEFLEX for VMware EVO:RAIL / vCenter Server are:

To configure EVO:RAIL, you will need to point your browser to this address.

I If the default network settings of PRIMEFLEX for VMware EVO:RAIL cannot be used in your network you must customize your appliance as described in chapter "Appendix" on page 41.

2.3.2 Configuring the TOR switch

Configure the top-of-rack (TOR) switch with instructions from your network administrator.

1. Configure the TOR switch to carry IPv4 multicast and IPv6 multicast traffic.

2. Configure a management VLAN on your TOR switch(es) and set it to allow multicast traffic to pass through.

3. Configure an out-of-band management VLAN on your TOR switch(es) or use the management VLAN.

4. To allow multicast traffic to pass through, you have two options for either your entire TOR switch or for the Virtual SAN and management VLANs (if you have VLANs configured):

a) Enable IGMP Snooping on your TOR switch(es) and enable IGMP Querier. By default, most switches enable IGMP Snooping, but disable IGMP Querier.

b) Disable IGMP Snooping on your TOR switch(es). This option may lead to additional multicast traffic on your network.

For IPv6, MLD (Multicast Listener Discovery) is essentially the same as IGMP (Internet Group Management Protocol) in IPv4.

LAN switch configuration for the PRIMEFLEX for VMware EVO:RAIL default appliance settings

For the purpose of this document we are going to use sample VLAN IDs between 100 and 110. Keep in mind that the appliance will be shipped by default requiring an untagged management VLAN. The VLAN ID itself does not matter, but it has to be untagged.

I The yellow marked settings are important to get access to the EVO:RAIL wizard. The non-marked settings are important during the deployment of EVO:RAIL.

I For detailed information on iRMC Advanced Video Redirection (AVR) refer to the "Integrated Remote Management Controller" user guides available online at http://manuals.ts.fujitsu.com.

5.2 Customizing PRIMEFLEX for VMware EVO:RAIL

I If the default network settings (see section "Default network settings" on page 13) cannot be used in your network, you must follow the instructions in this section before starting the PRIMEFLEX for VMware EVO:RAIL setup.

PRIMEFLEX for VMware EVO:RAIL ships with a default configuration (Untagged VLAN). In particular, management traffic is untagged and must be able to go over a native VLAN on your TOR switch or you will not be able to successfully create the appliance and ESXi hosts. (All other traffic - vSphere, vMotion, Virtual SAN, and VM traffic - is tagged for the VLANs you specify during configruation.)

It may be that the default settings must be changed, because only tagged VLANs are allowed in your network. Another reason might be that the default EVO:RAIL management IP address 192.168.200.10 cannot be used in your network.

This section covers how to change the VLAN for the ESXi management network and VM network and how to change the default vCenter server IP address, netmask and gateway. The changes require access to all nodes and to the vCenter server appliance.

5.2.1 Setting the initial VLAN ID for the ESXi management network and VM network

I The following procedure must be performed on all nodes of the appliance.

Ê Determine which VLAN_ID is used for the management network in your network.

I Notes on password

For security reasons, we strongly recommend the following:

– Change the default password.– Use password that combine 8 characters or more letters, numbers

and symbols.– Change the passwords regularly.

Customize

Ê Change the vCenter Server IP address:

/opt/vmware/share/vami/vami_set_networkËeth0ËSTATICV4 new_IP_addressËnew_netmaskËnew_gateway

Ê Stop EVO:RAIL services:

/etc/init.d/vmware-marvinËstop

Ê Using an editor such as vi, change the IP address, netmask, and gateway in:

/usr/lib/vmware-marvin/marvind/webapps/ROOT/WEB-INF/classes/application.properties

A sample bash script is provided below for automatic IP address modifications.

applicationProperties.config.vc.initialIP=new_IPapplicationProperties.config.vc.initialNetmask=new_netmaskapplicationProperties.config.vc.initialGateway=new_gateway

I The line numbers listed above may change without notice, so the use of automation is highly recommended.

Ê Delete all files in /var/lib/vmware-marvin/ directory:

rmË/var/lib/vmware-marvin/*

I There will be an error message that the dnsmasq directory cannot be deleted. This is expected, because this directory must remain for the appliance to function properly.

Ê Start EVO:RAIL services:

/etc/init.d/vmware-marvinËstart

Test

Ê Connect a LAN cable from your notebook to node 1, port 0 of the 10Gbit/s network adapter (see figure 20 on page 41).
