Cultural Corner In the Indian culture Diwali (pronounced doo-wah-lee) is India’s biggest and most important
holiday. It is celebrated for 5 days in October or November each year. This year it begins on
October 27th. Diwali means “rows of lighted lamps.” Electric lights, small oil lamps made of
clay, and flames are important Diwali symbols. Houses all over India twinkle with tiny lights.
They often call the celebration “The Festival of Lights.” Homes are cleaned and windows are opened in the hope
that wealth will enter. During Diwali, gifts are exchanged and feasts are prepared. Diwali marks the beginning
of a new financial year for businessmen. Old accounts are settled and new ones are opened.
Marlins, this week we’re asking: How many days are celebrated for the Diwali holiday in India? Place one an-
swer slip in a Cultural Corner box by the end of the school day this Thursday for your chance to win a prize and
have your picture displayed in a “Cultural Corner Cove” in the hallway. Your Student Council members will
select 1 primary and 1 upper grade student from a raffle during Friday morning announcements.

Our Marlin Babies are growing up!!! This is the year that we love to put your precious 6th grader’s
baby picture in the yearbook. As you know from prior years, this is a great keepsake for your 6th grader. The deadline to submit their baby picture is November 1st. We will not be able to accept late submissions. We will only be accepting these pictures by email to [email protected] (.JPEG or PDF). In order to make sure all pictures and emails are accounted for, you MUST turn in the bottom half of the form so we can match it with the email. If both are not sent by the deadline, the picture will not be added (extra forms are in the Office).
Please label the photos with your child’s first
and last name and the word baby.
o For example: JohnSmithbaby
