Choosing Your Course - the Right CourseThere are many different qualifications available at City College Plymouth. The one you choose will depend on: the qualifications you already have or will

shortly achieve whether you prefer a vocational or an academic

route, or a mixture of the two what you want to do after your course your preferred style of learning.

How do I decide which is the right route for me?There is a lot to think about when choosing which career you would like to follow, and whether you go straight from college or via university. Have you considered the following questions?

What do I like doing? What do I not like doing? What do I want from my career? Will it suit my personality? What qualifications do I need to achieve my aim? Will I have to study further? Do I want to progress to higher education? Do I want a job now or later?

If you are not sure which course is right for you, contact our Student Services team on 01752 305803. They will talk to you about your interests and expected grades, and suggest options to you. They may suggest, or you can request that you come to the College for a personal, dedicated, impartial careers interview. This will allow you to explore all the options available to you.

Alternatively, you can attend one of our open days or come into the College for a tour. This will give you the opportunity to find out what our courses involve, see our facilities and meet current students who are studying the subjects you are interested in. If you are unsure of the level you should choose or wish to gain a particular qualification, please use the table opposite.

Qualifications ExplainedFunctional skillsFunctional skills qualifications have replaced key skills. Functional skills are a new suite of qualifications for maths, English and information communication technology (ICT). If you develop your skills in numeracy, communication and ICT you are more likely to achieve your main qualification and be successful when you progress to the next level or into employment.

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs)NVQs are work-related qualifications which apply the practical skills and knowledge you learn at College directly into the workplace. They can be studied full-time at the College or part-time while in a job, work placement or on an Apprenticeship.

ApprenticeshipsFor those who want to follow the work-based route, there is a choice between an Apprenticeship (level 2) or an Advanced Apprenticeship (level 3). You are employed and receive a wage whilst training with an employer. Apprenticeships incorporate NVQs and functional skills and can also include technical certificates. See page 23 for more information.

BTEC Subsidiary and Extended DiplomasThese are new, two-year vocational qualifications which blend practical, career focused skills and academic study to prepare you for direct entry into employment or enable you to move on to higher education. They have been set up so that you can study for a subsidiary diploma in one year and then continue on to the extended diploma in the second year.

AS and A2 LevelsThis route involves you in continuous study - one year for AS level and two years for A2 level. At City College Plymouth you can either study an AS/A2 programme, or combine AS/A2 levels with a choice of vocational options such as business or media. See page 19 for more information.

GCSEsThe College offers an intensive one-year, full-time programme consisting of four GCSEs, academic development and tutorial support. It will give you a broad range of qualifications, good foundations for further academic study and an opportunity to update previous qualifications and improve your grades. See page 20 for more information.

Higher National Certificates These are higher-level qualifications which relate to a particular employment sector, and tend to be equivalent to the first and/or second stage of a degree. They are for students who are aged over 18 and have successfully completed an A level, extended diploma or other advanced level course.

Foundation DegreesThese are employment-related higher education qualifications equivalent to the first and second stage of a degree, developed by the College with employers. They are designed to include workplace experience, learning and assessment, whilst also providing a route for progression to the final year of a named honours degree at specified universities.

Access to Higher EducationAccess to Higher Education courses are for those who have not been in education for some time and do not have the necessary entry qualifications to progress to higher education. These courses provide an alternative route to higher education and focus on study skills as well as providing a foundation of learning for a specific subject area.

Access to Higher EducationThe Colleges Access to Higher Education courses offer a second chance to people who have not been in education for some time and need to learn how to study again. This can be for a variety of reasons - some people will have been told that education is simply not for them, that they lack the skills and ability to succeed educationally. Others will have had no real interest in pursuing their education and felt it was of no relevance to their lives, and others, of course, will have had all sorts of personal reasons which would have made it impossible to continue with their education when they were at school.

Many of our students, often with very different experiences and concerns, discover that they do have both the ability and motivation to learn, and as they do so their confidence grows. Many choose to continue with their education by progressing to university - and we have very good links with local universities, as well as some further afield. All the tutors on the courses are committed to supporting and enabling students to reach their full potential.

At the end of the course our students comment not only on the knowledge they have gained, but also on the support they have had from tutors, as well as one another. They also say that despite all the hard work, it has been fun returning to learn!

What do I need to get on the course? There are no formal entry qualifications required, although you will be interviewed, undertake an initial assessment and provide a 500-700 word assignment in support of your application, to ensure that you have the underpinning skills to enable you to begin the course.

If you are interested in undertaking an Access course in nursing or social care professions, there are additional entry criteria that you need to meet. For more information call 01752 305300 or visit www.cityplym.ac.uk.

    Moving on up

I joined the Access to HE Science course and developed quickly over the first few months because of my passion for the subject and encouragement from lecturers. The College supported me and helped me to achieve distinctions in all of my modules. Im now studying dietetics at Plymouth University and am working towards my dream of being a dietician.
