U.S. Department of EducationSchool Recognition Program

Schools Selected for Recognition1982-83 through 1989-90

The Secondary School Recognition Program and the Elementary School Recognition Program promoteexcellence in education and call national attention to groups of unusually successful public and privateschools. Schools honored are extremely good at educating the students they serve with availableresources. All can point to examples of effective practice and are Inspirations to other schools striving forexcellence in education.

Characteristics considered when selecting schools for recognition include:

Organization;

Leadership;

Curriculum;

Instruction;

Student achievement;

Character development;

School climate;

Community involvement;

Efforts to improve, and maintain high quality programs; and

Philosophy and goals.

When referring to the following list, note that:

Secondary School Recognition Programs were conducted in school years 1982-83, 1983-84,1984-85, 1986-87, and 1988-89;

Elementary School Recognition Programs were conducted in school years 1985-86, 1987-88,and 1989-90;

High schools, junior highs, and middle schools participated in the Secondary School RecognitionProgram. Elementary and middle schools participated in the Elementary School RecognitionProgram; and

In school year 1982-83, only public schools partidpated in the Secondary School RecognitionProgram. In all other years, both public and private schools participated in the Programconducted.
