Project Summary

Executive Summary

The College of Communication and Information works hard to make sure FSU students have the basic tools necessary to become strong leaders, great communicators, and technical experts in the fields they choose. In recent history, organizations are relying more and more on information technology to meet their demands and needs to survive in this new age of information.

The CCI undergraduate program for Information Technology is constantly looking ahead to ensure the students at Florida State university have the education to prepare them for the future. As many know, technology is advancing at a faster rate every moment.

To prevent the program from being left behind, the CCI Undergraduate program team has been researching trending technologies and ways to improve the program so that graduating students are inline and competitive with their peer graduates from other learning institutions. The team has also compared programs with other universities and reviewed the current programs at FSU to seek improvement, adapt to change, so that we can stay ahead of the curve. To solve this problem the CCI undergraduate team has been researching and prepared reports and data on the following.

• App development

• Trending technologies

• Customer service and communication

• Restructuring in the IT program in CCI for 2016

In conclusion, completing this project to fruition should

• Help the program to stay current with changing demands and needs of technology

• Keep graduates competitive so that what has been learned before entering the job market has not become outdated.

• Inspire new ideas for new and interesting courses for future students

• Help the FSU CCI undergraduate in IT program stay within the best of the nation.

Research Conducted

Our group did comparative research on what programs at other state schools and universities offered in the state of Florida. The list of that comparison in the appendices as an excel spreadsheet file.

The schools in the comparison are:

• Florida State University• University of Florida• University of South Florida• University of Miami• Florida Agricultural and Mercantile University• University of Central Florida• Florida International University• Florida Atlantic University• University of North Florida• Florida Gulf Coast University• Nova Southeastern University

(PMP) Project Management Professional Certification vs. (CAPM) Certified Associate in Project Management Certification

Which should be offered and why?

PMP - Project Management Professional Certification

Requirements:

• 4 year degree or equivalent• 3 years of project management experience• 4500 hours of leading and directing projects• 35 hours of project management education• Must maintain 60 PDU (Professional Development Unit) per 3 year cycle

CAPM - Certified Associate in Project Management Certification

Requirements:

• A high school diploma or equivalent• 23 hours of project management education• 1500 hours of project management experience

CAPM should be offered over PMP for now.

Page 5: FSU CCI Undergraduate in IT Strategic Planning• Must maintain 60 PDU (Professional Development Unit) per 3 year cycle CAPM - Certified Associate in Project Management Certification

5

• PMP only has one advantage over CAPM; PMP as a certification is better known than CAPM.

• Most students are not coming in with 3 years and 4500 hours of experience.• CAPM does not require a Bachelor’s degree; therefore students at any level can

work for it.• CAPM Hour requirements are plausibly within reach for students or recent

graduates.• CAPM is a good starting point for those less experienced in Project Management• No PDUs and 5 year cycle for re-examination.

Our group also researched the different COMPTIA certifications and there prices/benefits.

Types of Certifications Offered by CompTIA

• CompTIA A+• CompTIA Network+• CompTIA Security+• CompTIA Project+

CompTIA A+ • The industry standard for computer support technicians• This certification proves competence in areas such as installation, preventative

maintenance, networking, security and troubleshooting

CompTIA Network+

• This certification is the sign of a competent networking professional• This certification proves a technician’s competency in managing, maintaining,

troubleshooting, installing and configuring basic network infrastructure

CompTIA Security+

• This certification designates knowledgeable professionals in the field of security• This certification proves competency in system security, network infrastructure,

access control and organizational security.

CompTIA Project+

• A globally recognized project management certification that identifies qualified and quality project managers.

• A certification that covers the entire project life cycle from initiation and planning through execution, acceptance, support and closure. CompTIA Project+ gives project managers the skills necessary to complete projects on time and within

Hand-off plan

To ensure a smooth transition for this research and strategic planning project from the CCI Undergraduate in IT Program Strategic Planning team to the client, Dr. Ebe Randeree we have developed a Hand Off plan for those who may work on this project in the future. Most of the project is data and research driven and will be considered by the client to make decisions for the future of the program. We will release data onto a CD that will be given to the client for future use.

This disk will contain:• CD created with all relevant data to the project

• Institutions researched and comparisons

• New and fresh technologies that are trending

• Contact information of the current team for questions in the future.

• Lessons learned

• Risk Assessment

• The Project Plan in its entirety

Furthermore a presentation will be given to the client of the project to ensure the scope and vision is on track between both parties. Any questions or concerns can be discussed or addressed after the presentation.

Lessons learned

• Communication is critical!• Team Constraints

o Dividing the work Conceptual work is hard to segment and track

• Research Constraintso Talking to Employerso Finding out other schools informationo Understanding certifications (pricing, knowledge needed)

• Interpreting Client Wants/Needs/Expectations• Coming up with final recommendations

amongst other risk related topics. The plan also increased the chances of the project being completed on time and it also helped mitigate possible future risks.

4. On March 24th, a second project status report was completed to update the client. With this status report, the client and group got closer to finalize ideas. The final project plan was discussed on March 30th, 2011.

5. Group members are currently writing and finalizing plans which will be submitted no later than April 19th, 2011.

Risk Analysis

The risk analysis process follows the Florida State University requirements as well as the guidance provided by The College of Communication and Information at Florida State University. The risk analysis process reflected within the risk management report uses no cost, but schedule risk analysis methods within the framework of the Undergraduate IT program at The Florida State University.

The risk analysis results are intended to serve several functions:

1. Identify total assets and resources of the College of Communication and Information

2. Identify major threats3. Vulnerability identification4. Measure current risks5. Control recommendations6. Communicate future losses and potential risks.

Constraints and Assumptions

Certain constraints and assumptions may be dictated by the students at The Florida State University. Other constraints and assumptions may be assumed by the risk analyst or teachers of the university. Key assumptions are those that are most likely to significantly affect the determinations and/or estimates of risk presented in the risk management plan. The key assumptions in The College of Communication and Information are important to help ensure that strategic planning and other plans explained the steps, logic, limitations and decisions made in the risk management plan, as well as any resultant limitations on the use of outcomes and results.

CCI Undergraduate in IT Program Strategic Planning Initial Project Overview

Main Goals of the project• What will this program be/look like in 2016?• IT Program Rankings (How can we establish these?)• How does the recession/ budget cuts/ job loss effect us• As we move forward what should the IT program look like.

Sub Topics to Address

The new expanding market for Tablets (How will we respond as a program.

Classes to address the following expanding technologies1. Ipad apps and Tablet apps2. Cloud computing (all you need is the device to access your things)3. Networking (Put in your user name password and your life pops up)4. Apps (mobile driven application)5. HIT (Health)

Right now we focus on other things: What should we be teaching now so a graduate coming out is equipped to get a job. App development, App development II, and other classes

Look at the current, where do we rank (national and regional) / how do we compare, how do we respond to the change and increase in programs

No undergrad IT rankings, find something to rank them or compare them to us so we can respond to that

How does the environment effect the program. Syracuse being private can afford the funding to change faster and better, how can we respond to that.

Deliverables: for each suggestion we make will include the followingSolutionWhyData (Data structures***)RiskConclusion

• Since our last meeting with client Ebe Randeree our project group has since met to create our Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) and assigned duties to each team member establishing what resources are to be working on what milestones, as well as when those milestones must be completed by.

Such Milestones that are to be completed include:• Project Charter• Project Scope Breakdown• Risk Management Plan• Project status reports (2 separate reports)• Final Project Plan Breakdown• Final Presentation of findings (both to the client and to the class)

Attached to this document is that WBS, along with a memo explaining its contents.

• As discussed in our last meeting there are to be some major modifications to the Undergraduate IT program. Currently the major has 4 tracks, as discussed in our last meeting there is going to be an addition of two completely new tracks (Mobile App. Development, and Project Management) as well as the modification of the current tracks.o The mobile Application Development track will feature 3 core course

App development I App development II Advanced App development or IDS formalizing a mobile application

internship• We spoke briefly about how to bring in the necessary staff to teach the

courses and the funds required to research and produces syllabuses for the courses and need to further discuss those costs in our next meeting.

o The project Management Track is going to feature some of the elective courses already offered as well as expand upon them. LIS4264 – Will move into this track and be the basic foundation of project

management course. IT Leadership – Shift the course from its current location in IT electives LIS4910 – the current IT Project class

• Since the classes are already offered by the college the funding is already there, the track just needs to be promoted and made official. We had also spoke briefly about certifications, offering students the ability to get PMP certified at the completion of this track would be a major tool in the promotion of the program.

• Another major change we spoke about was the modification of the Networking and security track.o The current track is:

Networking

Advanced Networking Security Advanced Security

• We are proposing that the college combine the Basic Network and Basic Securities courses into one foundation course since they cover very similar materials. Also that both Advanced courses are kept but followed with the option to go for a CompTIA Security+ and/or Network+ certification at the completion of the Advanced courses. The addition of that option will be attractive to students as well as potential employers seeking graduates from the college with those certifications. This could potentially greatly increase interest in students considering FSU and our college in particular.

• The group has another meeting scheduled for March 15th the week of return for spring break to come up with more proposals as well as validate and research some more of the already proposed solutions.

• We propose having a follow up meeting with client Ebe Randeree that same week, possibly the 16th to discuss the progress made since that meeting. Please do not hesitate to contact the group via Project Manager if needed.

Re: CCI Undergraduate IT Strategic Planning

On January 20th, 2011 the FSU CCI Undergraduate team was formed. Chris Rochester was selected as the group leader. After forming, we met the with client, Dr. Ebe Randeree to discuss ideas and a plan of action to improve and update the CCI Information Technology Undergraduate Program. After the Initial meeting we were commissioned to provide ideas for the new course structure and future possibilities for new and innovative

classes.

• Created a new and improved course structure for the IT undergraduate program at FSU.

• Researched other universities to see what methods they use to rate programs.• Researched trends to find out where technology will be in 2016 to create ideas for

new courses.• Reviewed the current courses in place and comment on what should be changed.• Reported back to Dr. Randeree with findings to discuss the next steps.• The group will report as needed on a week to week basis check in with the client.• Contact information was exchanged between all stakeholders for communication.• Members will meet weekly to update and discuss the project.

After last meeting with the client on March 24th, we discuss ideas on the above tasks. We will reconvene Thursday, March 16th 2011 to finalize our steps into creating a written report of our project status to be given to the client.

• The group will keep working to tweak the course structure and meet with the client for updates.

• This project is more research based and will have some necessary redundancy in the process of the WBS. (discuss, review, write, submit)

Majewski 24A risk management plan will be completed no later than March 23rd, 2011 and submitted to the client.

• The purpose of the plan is to ensure the plan will not become stale or derailed. • A risk management plan will increase the chances the project will be completed

on time. • The plan should help mitigate possible future risks.• During this phase research is still being conducted to improve the program.

On March 24th a second project status report will be completed to update the client. With this second status report, the client and group will be closer to finalizing ideas. The Final project plan will be discussed March 30th, 2011. Group members will meet to write and finalize the plan which will be submitted no later than April 19th, 2011.

• If the final project plan is accepted by the client, the group will present.• The presentation will be created in the last weeks of March.• Members will practice to ensure ideas are effectively communicated.• The group will present April 19th, 2011 in appropriate attire.
