On October 25th a cross-town volleyball tournament was held. In the Forest Park

Middle School gym, approximately 30 fourth and fifth grade girls from

Field-Stevenson and Grant-White played 3 volleyball games.  The turnout of both parents

and students was excellent, and there was much

excitement in the crowd.  Coaches for the Field-Stevenson team were Ms.

Gustafson and Mr. Hopper while the coach for the Grant-White team was Ms. Sipp. Mr. Wilhelm, one of the physical education teachers from the Middle School, served as the referee, and score was kept on the official score board in the Middle School gym.  The competition was fierce, but good sportsmanship was observed on both sides of the net.  Final results were Grant-White won two games while Field-Stevenson won one.  At the end of the tournament, both teams shook each others’ hands and congratulated each other on a game well played.  Hopefully this is the beginning of a new cross-town tradition.  Congratulations to all the students involved!

Cold Weather ReminderFirst quarter brought the start of the Forest Park District 91 intramural program. On Wednesday, October 20, the Field-Stevenson Sharks and Grant-White Eagles competed in a friendly game of kickball at the park. The weather was beautiful, except for some wind, and the crowds were great. After seven innings the Grant-White Eagles took the win with a score of  9-3. Our Sharks played well and had a whole lot of fun doing so! We look forward to a rematch next year.

Congratulations to both teams! The boys had a great season and it showed at the competition. Great sportsmanship was shown by all!

staying out, or they remain in the gym if the other students are being brought in. Also, in order to simplify the entry process on those days when the students are inside in the morning, we are going to limit the number of entrances to two.  The first is the front entrance on Beloit.  The second is the middle entrance on the Ferdinand side.  In this way we will be able to direct the students into the gym from fewer entrances into the building.

TournamentThe 3rd Grade Art classes visited the National Museum of Mexican Art (formerly the Mexican Fine Arts Center) to visit their unique Day of the Dead exhibit. There students had a chance to view several offrendas created by artists in the Chicago area and throughout the world.

Students also got a chance to play in a playground at the museum campus. After activities, students dined on a delicious Mexican feast at Nuevo Leon Restaurant on 18th Street in Chicago.

The exhibit runs through December 12th, and the museum is free.

With the beginning of second quarter, parents and students at Field Stevenson will be able to view student progress and upcoming events at the Edline website, www.edline.net. Teachers will be posting grades on a weekly basis, and adding important dates (like test dates!) to their classroom calendars. Other classroom news will also be available. Parents and students have their own separate accounts, and may log on wherever a computer is available. It is helpful for

On Friday, October 29, 2010, students and teachers at Field Stevenson celebrated a good beginning to the school year for Positive Behaviors with a ½ day Halloween party in the gym.  Some fun music played while students entered.

The festivities began with the October Shark Bite drawing for prizes.  This month’s prize was a candy bag from Ferrara Pan.  Students wore their costumes, (faculty did also – Mr. McElligott was Albert Einstein and Mrs. Boucek was Mrs. Incredible) and

were treated to the movie “Monster House,” or “Wallace and Grommit in Curse of the Were-Rabbit.”  At intermission time, students paraded across the stage and

received a candy treat.  The movie resumed, and the morning ended with appreciative applause from the student body.  A great time was had by all, and we look forward to a good second quarter!

Edline for Parents and Students students to be able to log on both at school and at home, because as they get

older, they have the ability to save documents and presentations that they are working on to

their File Locker, and access them anywhere to continue their work. Parents may view their

student’s grades at any time from work or home. All student codes have been activated, and they are practicing logging in at school. Parents were given activation codes, but if a parent has misplaced or not received a code and would like to set up their own account, they may contact the homeroom teacher.

For some it may have been their first “camping” experience. While they were not in tents, they had to go without the comforts of home and the many electronics that occupy their days. Instead they became one

with nature and ALL the outdoors had to offer them!

They returned home tired and sore from days packed with activities, and the many memories and camp fire songs they learned at Covenant Harbor.

Reaching New Heights at Covenant Harbor

Field-Stevenson 5th Grade students and teachers spent three day at Covenant Harbor in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. The weather was

absolutely perfect for the annual Outdoor Education field trip.  Working with a great outdoor education staff, the 5th graders enjoyed classes in archery, fishing, orienteering, basic survival and everyone’s favorite, canoeing. While the students had fun, they learned valuable lessons in team work and cooperation. Students stepped up and showed tremendous leadership skills. Students stepped out of their comfort zone as they travelled feet above the ground in the high ropes elements. Many of the students climbed a rock climbing wall and then zip-lined down, facing their fears and the butterflies in their stomachs!
