JEFFREY IMPROVEMENTS CREATE EXPANDED ACTIVITY AREA

Several building improvements have been madeto the Jeffrey unit during the past couple of months through the efforts of board member Buddy McMahon and workers from Nabholz Construction, Blaylock Heating & Air and Turnquist Flooring.

The back wall of the northeast corner of the game room was knocked out to create an expanded program area. The previous space was used for storage.

Improvements also include new lighting, ceiling tiles, vinyl tile fl ooring, electrical outlets and the addition of a two-ton air conditioning unit. Metal wall panels were installed to cover existing windows on the inside and outside of the gymnasium. Gym exhaust fans and louvers were repaired, and three metal doors were replaced. The Jeffrey unit was built in 1978.

    ALUMNI NEWSSpring 2009

Country music superstar Toby Keith has confi rmed that he was once a member of the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club Evans unit. Living in Fort Smith in the late 1960’s, Toby attended school one year at Trusty Elementary and one year at Fairview. He played football at the Evans Boys & Girls Club during the 1970-71 season. Keith, who was born Toby Keith Covel in 1961, is the son of the late H.K. Covel and Carolyn (Ross) Covel. Toby’s grandmother, Hilda Martin, owned and managed Billy’s Supper Club. Although he spent most of his childhood growing up in Oklahoma, Toby would often visit his grandmother. He spent time working at her night club and listening to live performances by numerous musicians. After graduating from high school in Moore, Oklahoma, Toby dreamed of playing professional football. He spent several years working in the oil fi elds and playing in country music bands. By age 32, he signed with a major record label. His fi rst single “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” went to number one on the charts. Toby has received numerous country music awards including: Entertainer of the Year, Top Male Vocalist, Album of the Year, Video of the Year, and Favorite Male Artist. Today, Keith owns his own record label and has branched out into producing and acting. He is currently working on a fi lm called “Provinces of Night” with Hillary Duff. Overall, Toby Keith has charted 25 number one songs and an additional dozen top ten hits. Not bad for a kid who dreamed of playing professional football, and who played his very fi rst football game at the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club.

With decreases in funding for the Club because of the recent fi nancial crisis, Alumni & Friends board members are urging everyone to join the FSBGC Alumni & Friends Association. “We need support now more than ever” says Executive Director Jerry Glidewell. “With recent budget cuts, we are depending more and more on support through the Alumni & Friends sustaining membership drive” he added.

Last year more than 500 individuals joined the Association. More than $ 500,000 has been raised for the Club since the Association was established in 1991. An application is located on page 8, or go to www.fsbgc.org for more information.

He played for two SWC championship teams in addition to the undefeated 1964 national championship team. Bercher was named to UA’s All-Century Team in 1994 and was inducted into the University of Arkansas Sports Hall of Honor in 2002.

Jarrell Williams is a member of the FSBGC Hall of Fame and the University of Arkansas Sports Hall of Honor. He played halfback and defensive back on two Southwest Conference championship teams. His twin brother Darrell was a fullback for the Hogs during the same span. After a short stint as a freshman coach under Frank Broyles and an assistant high school football coach in Oklahoma, Williams took a job as the head coach at Springdale High School in 1965.
