“Growing up in Newcastle was rather unpleasant, as I experienced bullying and racism,” said Eddie. But

he found hope and inspiration in a fellow Asian – Bruce Lee. “I thought maybe if I start martial arts, then people would treat me with the same sort of respect that they treat him.”

Is the reason also being able to beat up the bullies? “It was never for that reason, believe it or not. What martial arts taught me was how to become better in life.”

Eddie started studying Wing Chun first, obviously because of

But on the second time watching it, I realised there’s some element of technique which is effective.”

Back then, it was the dawn of MMA, and the sport was not easy to learn with no proper gyms around.

“The only way I could practice was watching the fights on video and imitating the moves.” But he learned well and managed to get into MMA and training proper. After moving to Singapore to be part of the Evolve Fight Team, he’s now one of the top fighters in his weight class, not just in Asia but in the world.

He also loves anime films such as Hajime no Ippo (English title: Fighting Spirit), Death Note, Fist of the North Star and Fullmetal Alchemist.

His other indulgence is to eat. “I absolutely love kaya toast. I

Roland Restaurant claims to be the founder of chilli crab – a recipe crafted by Mr Lim Choon Ngee and Mdm Cher Yam Tian back in 1956. Why forex? Forex is predictable, which makes it easier for one to profit from repeating patterns and movements. I can buy and sell easily, and I can start trading with as little as just $1,000. Most forex brokers also provide sophisticated platforms that help you manage your risk easily and provide all the charts and data you need to do your trade.

Know your stuff. Forex is not for those who want to try their luck or get rich quick. Forex is for those with a deliberate trading strategy and risk control plan. You need the right mindset and method, and a desire to make this your second income.

Be realistic in your expectations on profit and loss. Do not be reckless in forex trading. Proper forex training on methods and N

What is forex trading?Forex trading refers to the buying and selling of foreign currencies (aka foreign exchange, forex or FX). The idea is simple: To make a profit, you buy currencies that are predicted to rise in value, and you sell those that are predicted to drop in value.

The good news is you don’t need to be a financial expert to understand forex trading. With the proper training and mindset, you can be your own forex trader, develop your own trading plan and create a viable source of income for yourself.

Why should I consider forex trading? Forex trading is getting more popular for many Singaporeans to make more money. Here’s why:• Low start-up cost. Little capital is required to start trading, as cost of trading is low and little start-up deposit is required. Plus, forex trading platforms are virtually free.• Trade anytime. Market access is available around the clock, since the global forex market operates 24 hours a day.• Trade anywhere. Traders can use smartphones with internet access to log in and trade.• Forex is scalable. You can choose to trade – and earn – as much as you can afford.

Whether you’re a working professional, shift worker or stay-at-home mum, forex trading offers a lifestyle with work-life balance and flexible hours. The playing field is also level, because you don’t need to be a financial expert to be a successful forex trader.

risk management will help make you a more profitable trader. So learn the right strategy, and trade smart.

Forex has given me freedom. I can trade anytime, anywhere. I can earn while I sleep, and earn while I shop, with just a few trades a week. As long as I’m online, I can log on my trading platform, access my charts, do my analysis and place my orders. Many of my students are working professionals who trade during their lunch hour. Many trade while they are on family holidays.

At TerraSeeds, we equip students with sound methods that work in all market conditions. Everyone who comes to us has one aim – to make more money from forex trading – and we guide them to make their dream come true.

Your free introduction to forexWhy you should trade forex – and why it helps to learn from experts like TerraSeeds

Trading in foreign currencies seem shrouded in mystery – until now. Read on to find out what forex is and why you should consider forex trading, and how you can grasp the fundamentals and minimise risk with a good forex trainer.

Page 13: Frontline (Sep/Oct'13)

Forex offers flexibility and work-life balance for me. I trade mainly in the European and US markets. This means I can do what I want in the early part of the day, and trade in the later part of the day when these markets open. I can monitor rates and trade anywhere, so long as there is an internet connection.

Forex is more “transparent” compared to the stock market. You are only concerned with macroeconomic factors that affect a country’s currency. For news that affect currencies, there are usually some indicators of impending change. This means it’s easier to read the trends for forex than for

stocks, which can be a lot more volatile.

It takes effort and experience to get it right. Don’t expect to learn everything overnight. Although I monitor the rates regularly, now I take only a few minutes to look at each trade, and then I’m free to do other things. Persevere and you shall succeed.

TerraSeeds provided me a structured way of analysing the market and trading probability. I like how Binni and her trainers would share their experience and thinking process without reserve. With their guidance, I was able to trade far better than learning on my own or from friends.

Why should I learn from forex trainers like TerraSeeds? If you’re new to forex trading, learning the ropes from a reputable forex trainer will shorten your learning curve and avoid pitfalls, and enable you to hit the road running with the correct techniques and values right from the start. As with any form of trading or investment, there’s always an element of risk involved in forex trading. Proper training is your best way to keep your risk to a minimum.

A good trainer will never promise instant success or methods that have no risk. Professional trainers like TerraSeeds make it clear there is no shortcut to success, and they aim to impart the right skills so that their students can make their own decisions on how they trade. In a way it’s like showing you how to fish, so that you can fish for a lifetime.

Everyone who comes to us has one aim – to make more money from forex trading – and we guide them to make their dream come true.

But just like every fisherman, and their preferred catch, are different, no two traders are alike. We all differ in terms of our expectation of returns, risk tolerance and amount of trading capital. To TerraSeeds, it is important that every trader formulate their own plan that is tailored to their trading style.

In addition to understanding the fundamentals and analysing economic indicators, TerraSeeds’ courses also share with students the psychology of forex trading – how to manage emotions and the mindset it takes to succeed. It is this combination of both hard and soft skills, as well as plenty of effort, that is needed to make forex work for you.

Frontline speaks to two local forex traders – a veteran forex trainer and a newbie trader – who share why forex has worked for them, and why it pays to have solid fundamentals and a structured approach in tackling the forex market.

DO Or DieWhether you’re home or abroad when disaster strikes,

here are some tips that could well save your life

tsunAmi+ If you’re at the beach and the sea suddenly

recedes, head inland, as this could mean a major surge of water is coming next.

+ Seek higher ground. Get up a building. Climb a tree only as a last resort.

+ If you’re stuck in the water, hang on to something that floats.

PlAne CRAsh+ Wear long sleeves, pants and covered

shoes, and keep your shoes on during the three minutes after takeoff and the eight minutes before landing – the most accident-prone times of a flight.

+ Remove keys and pens from your pockets, as these can stab you in event of an impact.

+ An aisle seat near an exit row gives you the best chances of survival.

biRD Flu PAnDemiC+ Wear a good respirator (yes, N95 or better)

i was enlisted in 1997 as an NSF and was posted to the old Paya Lebar Camp as a personnel

clerk. The next year I joined SCDF as a regular and was posted to Tuas Fire Station as a Hazmat Specialist, where I served until I left the SCDF in 2006.

As the CSM of a Rescue Battalion, I managed more than 200 NSmen in my company. I’ve learnt that I need to trust my men and learn to see their strengths in order to understand and bond with them. I am able to apply the same management skills at work and with my family and friends. I am happy that my unit won the Best Rescue Battalion in 2009 and 2011.

Profile – SCDf

The first incident i attended to, when I was still a regular in the SCDF, was a fatal case involving a foreign worker. A crane had toppled on a Bangladeshi worker, and I had to carry his body away from the incident site. His scalp was gone and there was blood everywhere. It is all part of the job for fellow firefighters out there.

i had a close call during a fire incident at a Tuas warehouse. It was late at night and the paint containers inside exploded just after we entered the building. Thankfully we were not too near the explosion.

The recent Disaster relief Exercise (DiREx) held in Thailand was the first time two NSmen were involved as part of the Exercise Team which primarily comprised of SCDF regular officers. I was proud to be selected as one of them.

it was an eye-opener to work with rescue forces from many countries. Sometimes we communicate by sign language as they may not understand English well.

it was great to work as a team once again with regulars, many of whom are my former colleagues. I am glad that I am still able to contribute to the nation as an NSman.

y love for music started when I was 10. Back then I already knew that I wanted

to be involved in the arts. In my secondary school days, for every song that I hear, I would analyse the structure, chords and harmony in order to have full control in the language of music.

During BMT, i was the chin-up leader as I was quite fit then. My job was to help my peers improve their chin-ups. When I take my IPPT as an NSman, I make sure I get full marks for the station categories and push myself to pass the 2.4km run. My wife is always worried because she knows I will always

push on even if I have not been exercising for years.

Every project is a new creative playground. I love to expand its potential and transform the ordinary – space, events, products, ideas – into the extraordinary. For example, when I was the creative director of the OCBC Gardens Rhapsody in 2012, we used actual sounds made by the resident flora and made them into a symphony of singing plants.

i believe in passing it on. I have been teaching in schools such as Lasalle, NAFA, junior colleges and polytechnics since 1999. I started teaching piano, improvisation

ecognising that NS plays an integral part in contributing towards the defence

of Singapore, the Committee to Strengthen National Service (CSNS) was set up to recommend measures to boost commitment to NS and recognise the contributions of our NSmen. Following the Focus Group Discussions conducted by MINDEF, SCDF held our very own Focus Group Discussions with our NS personnel to gather feedback and suggestions on NS-related issues.

Close to 80 NSmen and NSFs took part in SCDF’s CSNS Focus Group

Discussion at HomeTeamNS @ Bukit Batok on 25 July 2013.

The participants were organised into smaller groups where they shared their views on the various aspects of NS that made it a satisfying experience.

Feedback was also sought on the strengths of NS, along with suggestions on how to improve NS as a whole. Participants also shared their vision of NS in 10 years’ time.

Most participants felt that NS was beneficial to those serving, especially in transforming one from ‘boys to men’.

According to ORNSman, SSG (NS) Mohamed Fahd Bin Mazlan, NS had made him a more responsible man. Responding to real-life situations as a unit had also strengthened his bond with fellow NSmen.

NSF LCP Justin Tan Guan Liang also said that his NS experience had helped him learn to better cope with stressful situations.

There was a general consensus that the Focus Group Discussion was a good platform for NS personnel to provide their feedback and play a part in shaping the future of NS.

LearninG tO LeaD Reflections on CSC from an NS Commanding Officer

F rom 15 April to 13 May 2013, I underwent an enriching Police Command & Staff

Course (CSC). The CSC is a milestone course for senior police officers and I was privileged to be the only PNSman chosen to attend the course.

The CSC consists of local and overseas components. The local phase, incorporating both theoretical and practical aspects, included lectures on media management, regional security, interest-based strategic negotiation, small group discussions, and team-building exercises. All the activities were designed to let us get to know one another better and prepare us for the two-week overseas component in Perth, Australia.

We also learnt much from Leadership Group members and other experienced trainers on many areas ranging from operations, investigation, planning knowledge, management and

skills to psychology, communications and handling media. Having spent the last 14 years in KINS Command, I did not have many opportunities to stay updated on such knowledge. It was certainly an eye-opener for me as I learnt about the SPF’s capabilities and advancement in

various areas, all in keeping to its mission of preventing, deterring and detecting crime.

The overseas training phase then provided us with a platform to try out various leadership styles. All lessons learnt earlier were put to the test under challenging circumstances. The guidance provided by our facilitators and SPF mentors also brought out the lessons in an impactful way.

It has been an amazing learning experience. The time spent together with my course mates through many trying conditions and the honest sharing and feedback also had me on a journey of self-discovery. The CSC has definitely made a difference in the way I deal with people and situations, and my decision-making as a KINS Commanding Officer.

CelebRAting As OneA Home Team National Day at Marina Bay Sands

F rom 13 to 16 July, Home Team shooters pitted their skills against top shooters in the IPSC and IDPA practical shooting events in

the annual Singapore Open Shooting Championship held at the National Shooting Centre.

This year, a record 200 shooters from various SPF units took part in the IPSC and IDPA events. Shooters had to engage multiple threat targets as fast as possible under stressful conditions, while moving from position to position and avoiding non-threat targets.

ome 3,500 HomeTeamNS members and their families were at Marina Bay Sands on 9 August to celebrate Singapore’s 48th birthday.

This event was organised by HomeTeamNS in partnership with the National Youth Council, SPF, SCDF, Avalon Club, Camelot, Flame of the Forest, Kombi Rocks, National Library Board, People’s Association Teen Network, Publicitas Publishing, Public Utilities Board, Mickael Bellemene and Weike.

The audience was treated to a live telecast of the happenings at the Marina Bay floating platform, as well as free popcorn, candy floss and performances by juggler Mickael Bellemene and local Indian-Western fusion music trio Flame of the Forest.

After singing the national anthem, there was a cake- cutting ceremony, and then it was time to end the

evening with a spectacular fireworks display. Happy birthday, Singapore!
