AT A GLANCE New local media playback function enables users to play their own music in conjunction with streaming Coderus required to deliver end-to-end design THE CHALLENGE Frontier Silicon is a leader in the field of smart audio technologies for digital radios. Founded in 2001, Frontier Silicon has offices around the globe with customers that include Sony, Philips, Pure, Panasonic, Roberts, Grundig, Bose, Bang & Olufsen and several major retailer own-brands. Frontier Silicon’s in-house team had already developed a streaming app, UNDOK. Supported by at least 50 audio manufacturers, the app is a music streaming remote control for radios, speakers and sound bars. Allowing users to navigate between audio modes, browse content and select presets across single devices and multi-room groups, UNDOK delivers a highly flexible and intuitive experience for connected audio. To further enhance its features and capabilities, Frontier Silicon asked Coderus to deliver a ‘Local Media Playback’ (LMP) function. This would enable users to play and manage music from multiple stations, from a device of their choice, wirelessly transmitting to a Frontier Silicon-compatible home network audio device. To meet user expectations, it would deliver an optimal experience across iOS and Android platforms. Initially, we focused on integration, working with Frontier Silicon’s proprietary libraries, its Venice 6.5 platform and other UPnP AV devices. Coderus has significant experience in working with existing partner ecosystems, and, as a Design Partner for the likes of Cypress and Qualcomm, we were able to utilise our experience of process design to proceed with confidence. The company required a partner that was experienced in delivering quality embedded solutions. At Coderus, we recognise the importance of adhering to quality standards for information management. With the combined ISO27001 and ISO9001 accreditations under our belt and established track record in working with manufacturer designs for embedded modules, we were confident that we could deliver an outstanding result for Frontier Silicon.

SCREENSHOT

THE RESULTSOnce fully functional and complete, Frontier Silicon confirmed that the delivered solution met all expectations for ease of use and responsiveness, with the following benefits:

Compatibility across a wide range of devices: developed Library adheres to the strict UPnP AV standard

Compact coding: changes made within the app were low impact to ensure music was streamed as efficiently as possible, improving the user experience

Internal reassurance: the QA teams testified to the quality of the delivered solution

Sustainable: future updates are easily managed by the provision of an independent Library

Support for continuous improvement: through the provision of comprehensive documentation

Mark Thomas, Coderus CEO, concludes: “Working with Frontier Silicon has been great. The project has demonstrated Coderus’ ability to support embedded module manufacturers’ designs and have our solutions demonstrated at exhibitions, where streamed wireless has to work flawlessly in challenging wireless environments.”

THE TECHNOLOGYThe UPnP AV architecture used consists of a media renderer (the speaker), a control point (the app), and a media server. The LMP Library enables the playback of local content stored on a mobile device to connected speakers, accessed via UNDOK. This app allows the search, display and user selection and the core functionality required for audio streaming over UPnP to compatible devices handled by the library. The LMP UPnP/DLNA compliant Library manages all the UPnP AV operations.

THE METHODOLOGYCoderus’ initial development stages focused on creating the Local Media Playback (LMP) Library independent of the UNDOK app. The Library was unit tested during development to reduce the risk of bugs and help maintainability before being integrated into UNDOK. The entire solution was user-interface tested, including iOS and Android presentation design, and had to undergo rigorous consistency checks. Leaving a robust audit trail was important both to the client and to Coderus. Following Frontier Silicon’s version control methods, we reassured the project team that only the correct and latest changes were in the system. For the final version of the software, we delivered comprehensive documentation and usage guidelines to guarantee full audit and ease of use.
